Beautiful. Props to Malcolm and Bob, Jimi, and the collective vision of the Isleys. Do we still have family bands these days--even in Hip Hop? Something about that seems to be important in instilling a sense--even if symbolically--of togetherness, of pulling together for a common, uplifting purpose. If it isn't there, we need to create it again. Also, the Isleys from the late '60s to mid-70s drew on music from many genres. It seems the opportunity won't exist today unless we demand it.
So strange! This song, the delivery, the sentiment, the arrangement, everything....is blue-eyed soul to me...its so bizarre that it was written by Isley Bros. I cant get my head around it..George made the song his own. I used to just think this was Wham being inspired/ thiefing from Culture Club!!!
Having heard both versions, It's kind of silly to say one of vastly superior than the other. GM basically sang it the same way RI did and the arrangement isn't much different.
Both of these guys are tremendous talents and GM has maintained "I can't truly express myself fully without some R&B influence" as is the case with many White British artists.
This one is a wash. Just enjoy both versions and move along...
Its a shame this song is originally isley brothers, coz i always thought whata butiful song george has written..whams version is a million times beter, coz georges voice is so soft & delicate, when he pitches it high & low, when he says that way...esp in the end...
While I am a fan of originals and The Isley Brothers, I must say that the Wham version has more zest and pep! George Michael's voice is so much stronger and clearer in this instance.
I love this more mellow version as well though and The Isley Bros are legendary.
We are talking about two different era here. The 70s was a laid back soul genre. 80s was POP. Of Course Wham version will have more snap. I've known Ronald and Rudolph Isley for over 10 yrs. I can tell you that there are countless POP/Rock bands that have covered their Originals. Ronald is One of a Kind. The Isley Brothers are the only group to expand and hit the charts from 50s til today. Elton John and Jimi Hendrix was once band members.
This is a true classic, but I feel saddeninggly like the Isley Brothers wrote the song and Wham! nailed it, because everything down to GM's high pitching of "thaat waay" is indicative of a more polished version.
That said has anyone here heard the Isley Brother's version of "Summer Breeze" - magic.
I usually detest "over-singing", however I take this song to be worth the gusto of George Mcihael's octave range. Some songs are worth letting a bit of voice drible over the sides as if seafood pie filled to the brim.
I respect the Isley Brothers for coming up with this fantastic tune, but Wham absolutely nailed it for the delivery.

The 3+3 lineup! Ernie Isley was such a genius, he played the drums, guitar and co wrote the songs!

Both versions are great actually....the Isleys' version is just more earthy and organic sounding, and Wham's version is more 80s synth pop.

The Isleys were going for a pop rock sound around this point. This could've been a hit if pushed for release from "3 + 3".

That all depends if you prefer tinny 80s production and George's over-singing.
