Watch all of season 1, and then watch all of season 2, then you'll understand it. This entire series is like psychological horror mystery.

If you've watched an anime series called Gantz they explain about a book called Labrynth (it's a real book) it's about living in a maze and they can't get out, it's sorta like that. You'll need to watch ALL of this season, and the 2nd season, in order to understand any of this. Just be patient, I don't want to ruin the series or anything with a spoiler.

This anime, originally called "When the Ciceda's Cry" shortened to "When they Cry" is a unique anime in which the story resets every couple episodes. If you watched it somewhere else, they usually label the arcs, and the arcs are almost always unrelated.

But, there is a twist. One larger than ever thought before. For the series as a whole.

@XDomeMan Not sure, really. Some plots do that. As a matter of fact, I remember Æon Flux, the animation, not the movie, resetting after every episode. Some of the time, she would actually die, and it was a bit of a weird one. Some shows or anime do this, but most don't because they're not always popular.

Higurashi is popular because of the horror factor of it, as well as the psychological thriller.

@nadaci901 It's easier if you just watch it yourself, but I think part of the reason is in Japan, new anime come out every season, and only a few continue, whereas in America, we run very long anime series and rarely get new anime. Higurashi is a balance between the two, where its the same characters and settings with a different plot every couple episodes. Plus it's a popular theme in Japan.. Resetting things, I suppose.

@billjonson123 But, that's all there is to explain, really. It's a horror/mystery anime with multiple arcs and endings, and then the plot resets, and a new arc happens. It used to be something commonplace, and a lot of anime still do it. Take Amagami SS(Still running) for example. It's arcs that last 4 episodes each, each with their own plot but in the same setting.
