Billie's interpretation of this song is exactly the way it should have been. It is a sad song and her voice by then was sad and to hear any other artist sing it is a disappointment. They can't capture the essence of the sadness in their voice.
doesn't this mean we can? we can be great. sincere. we can. we can overcome anything. we don't need wings. humans can fly in a wide open sky. full of love and joy.
@bigeman25 She came into her own in the 1950s. Her voice was still full and controlled, and Norman Granz paired her with small combos that highlighted that supple range.

Refleja una verdadera agonía que sale del corazón. Eso solo lo puede hacer Billie Holliday.
Shows a truly agony from her heart.

It is obvious she lived life ... or she couldn't sing songs like that ...
Been in the trenches, I think. Wasn't an easy life ... :(

Shattering... the voice is almost gone, the soul and the musicianship have never been better.
One of my two favorite tracks from this LP.
Shattering.

As I have grown older I have come to realize, as Billie got older she got better.
When I was young, the young Billie was all I wanted to hear.
Now, later Lady, I have learned, is a true artist.

Late Billie is really special, that she can still draw so much out of this song. Really hauntingly beautiful, start to finish.
