@steamdriver12 Many thanks. Wasn't aware about the double banker till you said - with thanks. Not sure if i'm going to be able to make it just yet, never the less, 3 steam locos on one train is amazing.
perfect! I have not seen a more perfect track side since the days of C W Whitbeck out trying to catch firemen wasting fuel during the war. She was running as clean as it gets. L -o-
They still got it, the legendary steam locos still impressive! My baby leading with the awesome pannier at the rear, what more could a super-veg ask for! faved.
@matanuialive2010 No this was a one off, it is preserved with a mainline certificate, and was used on this occasion only for this charter train. Usual day to day banking duties are performed by a fleet of about 6 dedicated Class 66 diesels with low running gears for the job.
@matanuialive2010 yup by the looks of it. unless the muppet driving it just wants to piss about with british rail (in witch case it will need a brake van lol
A joy to behold, the tank reminds me of a kid trying to keep up with mum in a hurry and as for that earlier comment re sub standard brakes and couplings....what planet does that moron come from. As if the rail regulator is going to allow sub standard equipment out there.
I know that the question was very likely rhetorical, but the presence of the banker is more for the carriages than for lizzy, they're old carriages, with (by modern standards) substandard couplers (and brakes), and adding the banker allows some of the strain on the couplers to be taken up. That's why lizzy isn't even breaking a sweat while 9600 is struggling to keep up.
Excellent and highly impressive video. I bet the passengers on the cross country train were surprised when they passed a train with 2 steamers working really hard! Great to see the pannier working so hard too; reminds me of the period when GW Panniers banked the Folkestone Harbour Branch.
@robmasterman Thanks Bob. Yes was worth the wait in that corner. Don't think I'll be doing that again in a hurry! Need a mic for that camcorder though.
@robmasterman Thanks Bob. I've spent most of the time since your reply looking for one suitable, but ive also been told Directional Mic's are better? I'm going into Birmingham Tomorrow Princess Lizzy (again) so dropping by at one of the music shops who stock Rode.
@KBRAILVIDEOS The best Mic I've had was a Sennheizer but it does have wiring issues that causes problems for the user, I know several people who use a Rode mic and they say it's superb...I'll leave it with you and good luck with the search...Bob
Truely awesome I have never been to the Lickey great video one of the BEST..you need a fuzzy microphone to cancel out the wind noise..I need one too. Great job
Loved this. I can't quite decide if you were unlucky or very lucky with that ubit passing t'other way. You were unlucky it was there at all, but very fortunate it ^%#$^%ed off just in time.
Aka MG06ZT...it's a steam Hover....deli voyager!! Great day & a very long one. Great shots' mate. Pity about that bloke in that blue trackie top!! Great video. Cheers.
@ay76 The guy in blue trackie top needs to seek help. Was a great day, will send some shots over of my stills when ive sorted the hard drive out for the PC, as its completely full now. Cheers
@EastMidlandsSteam Thanks :) Aghhh, I knew there was something else which I needed to photograph that weekend, on the sunday, HST to Skegness, oh well :\ How was the weather in Skegness? Cheers
@KBRAILVIDEOS Aye wernt too bad thanks. Got caught in a lightning storm saturday that wasnt forecast :O hailstones the size of marbles!! trust me it hurt :P
There have been some great videos of this climb and this is up with the best - your long shots really caught the fearsome nature of the gradient! Thanks for sharing.
TU :-) Wow!!! Sure looks like a steep grade but the way those engines were powering upwards and onwards made me double check. The majestic power of the Princess with the little Pannier puffing its heart out at the back. You just gotta love it!!!
Ref. additional mic. I've been videoing railways since my shot of Mallard on a special from York in 1986 ! I make sure my camera has a mic.socket/input as I often prefer high shots where it can be windy. eg Margam Mores for steam in S/Wales,Stormy Bank and Sugar Loaf in Mid Wales. E mail me direct if I can help.
I wish I was there, excellent. Only slight criticism; invest in a better mic. with a wind cover for those once in a lifetime shots. It's worth it. Mike Wilcock. Vale of Glamorgan
Superb - awesome spectacle - both engines in sensational form and footplate crews putting on a splendid display - just adore the tank engine thrashing away on the back - Princess Elizabeth is sensational, with today's technology would be interesting to know how much tractive effort she was achieving on that climb - must be huge
@NapierNimbus Thanks :) Not a moment i'll forget in a hurry. Finding out how much tractive effort the set had would be most interesting indeed. Cheers
Great to watch, almost got the impression 6201 is cruising up the incline with 9600 giving it full to keep up!! Credit to both engines though it makes superb filming. 5*. Perhaps 6201 could have been given a clear run at the incline and I am sure would have done it in fine style with the load she had.
@rosegrovempd1 Thanks :) Not sure on the Number, but Leander was given a clear run single loco, which made it to the top, and she had Less tractive power than 6201 so i'm sure 6201 could have done it no problem, although the reason for a banker is so they can reverse the set at Landor Street Junction into Tyseley without needing to run round. Cheers
Great shots! Back in 1999/ 2000 The SVR's Standard 4 tank 80079(?) banked a Black 5 up here - but any steam tour banked by steam is a sight to behold on the Lickey!
Full credit to both fireman as they would have to work very hard. Great shot. Thanks for sharing
