@DieselKarnivore It's not retarded. In derby, you're playing around a lot of sometimes very aggressive players, and your jammer (person who scores points) has to get through the mess of people. A whip not only helps the jammer, or other player, to make smoother/more stable turns, but especially when done correctly can give them a much needed boost in speed.

These may not be the best examples, but it's a start.
