Kind loving and creative energy is always in the world. It has alway been just below the surface of filth hate greed and fear. Those that find it turn the world upsidedown so it rises to the top.
On the contrary. Civilization has made enormous progress. It will do the same in cyberspace.
If you have 21 minutes, watch Steven Pinker's remarkable talk at TED last year. I was fortunate enough to see this impressive presentation live. Audience reaction was interesting. Unfortunately, facts don't help us overcome anecdotally-based beliefs. Here's the video on YT: youtube dot com slash watch?v=ramBFRt1Uzk Thanks for your response video.
but you were talking about rude insulting behavior on the internet and the way we are so much more vulnerable to it there than we are on the city streets where we supposedly have recourse, I don't believe that we do have much protection here in that regard, the matter of the progress of civilization(s) at large was really not the issue, not mine at least. Thanks for sending Pinker's talk. I'll check it out.
Actually, no. I was using the rude behavior as an example of an irritant. (Notice: I didn't retaliate to the profanity.) I only resorted to civilization's mechanisms, the police (imperfect, though they may be) when the imaginary other threatened my family. This is where civilization's progress is most evident, and most patently absent on the Internet. Good to meet you!
Excellent common sense! I believe that civility and common decency is the simplest, cleanest, most honest way of being human. I don't know you, but what you present here is worthy of respect. Therefore, your presence here commands that I must be cool, a nice guy, and refrain from vulgar barbarity. Simple, eh?

What you say is heartbreaking but true.
I love your "foreplay" line. It's been rattling about in my brain since you first said it months ago...

Disturbing and sad but TRUE!
Although, I do believe the anonymity of the internet allows even the meek to reek havoc and plunder thru verbiage their fellow man;(

2. Oh, and with regard to being a dreamer: guilty, as charged! Nothing's possible without a vision.

Good observations. "...is foreplay, and we don't know what for." LOL. Kind of scary.
