If there's one goal that embodies everything Bergkamp is about, its the goal in the 90th minute to salvage a win. Not only did that play require incredible skill but once he controlled that 40 yard pass as if it was on a tee, he had to have the composure to finish the play with a goal. He really lived up to the nickname "Iceman" on that play. Incredible skill, incredible composure.

Each Dutch generation has it''s own scars from not winning the WC. 70s, we should have won. 80s, we could have won. 90s, we should have won, and now... sigh. Well, at least real football fans know and respect us for our contributions to the beauty and excitement of the game, over the years.
Bergkamp played this match for free,he'd been penalized due.. you know what happened against Yugoslavia.I mean he decided the end of this match and no other Dutch player could have done what Bergkamp did.BTW vs Yugoslavia was another game won undeservedly by the Netherlands.

Same thing there, and I was especially disappointed in Bergkamp, who I had enourmous respect for since I was a little kid, after he purposely stomped on Mihajlovic. Bergkamp's goal was without a doubt the best one of the 1998 finals and that pass he received from De Boer was par excellence. It's a pity they couldn't win this World Cup or last year's but frankly speaking the 1998 squad was far better than the one in South Africa. Hopefully in 2014 the Oranje can finally get their hands on the elusive Cup. It would be a tall order to win in Brazil though seeing that European team don't seem to fare too well when the WC is played in the Americas.
Holland, maybe not acknowledged by most, actually had the chance to win that worldcup. Referees are a too decisive. The first yellow card given to Numan was not at all a card which makes his sending off too much of an exageration. THe referee may have been paid lots of money by the Argentinians who had to buy the referee off in 78 to win the worldcup at home which they started off without Cruyff. Holland should have won and could have won 2 worldcups. The one lost to Spain was a correct result.

Bergkamp played this match for free,he'd been penalized due.. you know what happened against Yugoslavia.I mean he decided the end of this match and no other Dutch player could have done what Bergkamp did.BTW vs Yugoslavia was another game won undeservedly by the Netherlands.

@Proglove85 Two red cards (could've been more), dozens of dirty tackles on this match... and watch the previous game, against Yugoslavia. Same thing there, and I was especially disappointed in Bergkamp, who I had enourmous respect for since I was a little kid, after he purposely stomped on Mihajlovic. That scene made me think of him as a piece of shit instead of hero he used to be....

Bergkamp's goal was without a doubt the best one of the 1998 finals and that pass he received from De Boer was par excellence. It's a pity they couldn't win this World Cup or last year's but frankly speaking the 1998 squad was far better than the one in South Africa. Hopefully in 2014 the Oranje can finally get their hands on the elusive Cup. It would be a tall order to win in Brazil though seeing that European team don't seem to fare too well when the WC is played in the Americas.

Holland, maybe not acknowledged by most, actually had the chance to win that worldcup. Referees are a too decisive. The first yellow card given to Numan was not at all a card which makes his sending off too much of an exageration. THe referee may have been paid lots of money by the Argentinians who had to buy the referee off in 78 to win the worldcup at home which they started off without Cruyff. Holland should have won and could have won 2 worldcups. The one lost to Spain was a correct result.

@suckieduckie yeah but Holland wasn't better but it was just an awful final both sides fouled to hard. In the final the one who was better doesn't win and now holland wasn't better and they lost. That's a bit hard but their will always be a next euro or world cup.

Cruijf did not go because he received death threats to him and his family from argentinian people if he would choose to go with the Dutch team. The rest of the dutch team got threatned too in that final to lose else their wives and them would not leave the country in one piece.. people will say what about the police.. what about it? Argentina is fucking corrupt the police would want their team to win no matter how...
