Those hip thrusts are very effective to strengthen the gluteus maximus and the erector spinae.The gluteus get a totally different,better ,workout than when squatting.
Try it and you'll notice it the next day when just walking around.It feels like you can explode yourself forward.
Looks like the guy is cringing more from the annoying pain that bar puts into the pelvic bone than from doing the actual exercise.
I found rolling a streching mat around the bar works well for getting optimal padding.
Dudes got that good docilimorphic bone structure which favors squatting movements.

@mister100m It would definetely benefit as a general exercise to greatly strengthen your posterior chain without wearing out your CNS.
