Possibly my favourite song on Golden Heart. Particularly the part at 1:51 with the flute/pipe. Knopfler's fantastic ability to tell stories just shines through in this song.
This is what defines a musical genius and his ability to bring to life a feeling or mindset of a group of soldiers that are tired of Napoleon's egocentric nonsense. Mark "paints" a phrnomenal mental image picture of how it must have been for those poor guys. Knopfler has all the others beat. All of them.
Another brilliant masterpiece by MK. His ability to see through the eye(s) of others, his compassion, empathy is unrivaled. So underrated Knopfler that it truly breaks my heart. This tune must mirror the feelings and frustration of all the soldiers (living and dead) that have followed the whim of their colonels and generals as they go off to war, never sure of their fate.
If you've ever battled a susbstance demon this song can have profound meaning! Got me through some rough times.

On this day in history, Napolean was defeated at Waterloo. Any excuse to listen to Mark Knopfler is good.

@jessied44 no one needs an excuse to listen to Mark Knopfler. The fact he is one of the most amazing musicians ever is enough for me
