  • This vid is popular on Belmopan

  • Just amazing thanks pocket wizard for the video from jewell

  • its expensive as hell

  • Your vid went viral on Manama

  • this guy can teach yo!!!!!! he is the reason i bought my pocket wizards.

  • i really need help...i have a canon flash with the high sync speed fuction...but as soon as i take it off camera ..i have the black stripe issue..is it because of my remotes? how can i high sync an off camera flash? do i really need to buy one of thoese xpensive pocket wisards?

  • These guys are awesome. Thanks

  • I would really like to know how to control the output of the flash. I use a D700 with TT5 and mini with an SB-900. I use a softbox to soften the flash and shadows, but It sometimes blows my image way out.

The only thing I have found to help me is to either decrease shutter or lower f stops. ISO is something I use to adjust also. Please help pocket wizard experts.

    Thanks

  • @equine designs: shoot it in full manual mode mate and you can't go wrong.

  • am I correct in thinking the flash does not detect the distance from the subject, therefore you need to take a metre reading when you position your light.s I

is this why you shot at 5.6. i am a little confused as when I tried this some shots were blown out. I have a 7d and have to set it on Tv in order to change the speed. Am I missing something. what am I doing wrong???thanks

  • Can the Plus IIand the Mini's be paired for High Speed Sync?

  • mark used to work for pocketwizard? adorama is better =] keep up the good work mark! if you coming to NYC for a workshop, I'd love to attend!

  • 6:45

..and don't forget to remove the lens cap...

    :-)

  • hey baldy, your assistant is hot

  • Just expensive.

  • One question for the high speed sync. Lets say we are shooting at 1/8000 in high speed sync mode. Why does the speedlite have to fire small bursts instead of one calculated flash last for the whole 1/8000 like it does for 1/250 in normal sync?

  • @rocboy2006 The best answer comes from Mark Wallace on the PocketWizard Website.

    Check this out: pocketwizardDOTcom/inspirations/tutorials/pocketwizard_controltl_optimiz/

Short answer, the type of shutter used in DSLR cameras that have an optical viewing system puts the shutter in the way of the image pick up at speeds above the rated X-sync speed.

  • @rocboy2006 Because the flash can't keep the flash tube lit for that long time.

  • Do I have to select "High Speed" mode on my camera to active this mode on my PocketWizard or they Sync automatic to the speed on my camera

  • @zoobiewa The PocketWizard ControlTL system used in the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 gives you two options for using higher than normal shutters speeds. The first is HyperSync. The PocketWizard Utility software enables changing when the trigger signal leaves the camera-mounted transmitter. If adjusted properly, the trigger signal is transmitted before the shutter opens causing the flash to start firing before the shutter travels.

  • @pocketwizardvids

Huh? You totally did not answer my question at all. From what I've read, hypersync does not allow pushing the shutter by all that much. High speed sync does, but what is the distance max?

  • @zoobiewa The PocketWizard ControlTL system used in the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 gives you two options for using higher than normal shutters speeds. The first is HyperSync. The PocketWizard Utility software enables changing when the trigger signal leaves the camera-mounted transmitter. If adjusted properly, the trigger signal is transmitted before the shutter opens causing the flash to start firing before the shutter travels.

  • This enables using shutter speeds faster than the normal Canon rated maximum flash sync. With some shutters and flash systems, it is possible to use shutter speeds right up to 1/8000 sec with FULL POWER manual flash (this is NOT and autoflash technique). High Speed Flash Sync or HSS, has been around since 1986 but has not be popular until wireless radio flash triggering?

  • Why? Because, instead of firing one big flash pop, the flash power is split up into hundreds of smaller flash bursts which appear like constant light to the CCD/MOS imaging sensor (or film). Before wireless radio triggering, the flash had to be in the camera hotshoe to use HSS. The effect it produced was similar to having a movie light on your camera. A constant light source like a movie light has one major drawback:

  • the subject-light working distance is affected by both the aperture and the shutter speed. That is, using a smaller aperture shortens the working distance. And using higher shutter speeds shortens the working distance. When HSS was put into film SLRs in the 1990’s, the camera makers claimed that you could take flash pictures at up to “1/8000 second.” True. What they did not tell customers was the working distance when an 1/8000 sec was used was only about 3 feet

  • As the flash had to be on the camera to operate at HSS, that meant the camera must be used at 3 feet away from the subject. That is why this very interesting feature has not drawn attention in all of these years. Enter wireless radio triggering with the PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5. Now you can place the flash where they NEED to be, close to the subject, while you, the photographer and your camera, can be anywhere you want to be to get the shot you want.

  • Very BIG stuff. So flash-to-subject working distance is determined by what shutter speed and aperture you select. Wider apertures give greater distance, higher shutter speeds reduce them. You can control the distance by the settings you make. Now to answer your question: fire is quite a bright light source. Penetrating it with flash would require a powerful flash unit. Doing this with the flash at 300-500 feet from the fire would require a flash unit of considerable brightness.

  • Perhaps not possible. I don’t think the technology of provided by the Mini and Flex would be a great help to you for this.

  • I needed this so badly. You made it all make sense. I can't wait to get out with my Sony 58 and experiment. Wow, a whole new world!

  • Ok, so with Hypersync, what is the max shutter speed i can work with studio strobes or non-dedicated TTL Flashes?

  • @DX2007ccs The maximum HyperSync speed is dependent the specifications your cameras shutter and the specifications of the flash in use. Normal rated flash sync is usually about 1/250 sec. Better focal plane shutter mechanisms may allow using 1/500 sec and perhaps a little higher. Over this, the second shutter curtain is moving before the first shutter curtain fully open. Proper exposure then relies on a very large fat top arc of the flashs power output through which the shutter slit passes.

  • @DX2007ccs The best outcome is achieved at the flashs full power setting and usually at shutter speeds over 1/2000. If you choose to explore this feature of the Mini and Flex, you will need to spend some time making adjustments in the sync timing section of the PocketWizard Utility Software to find the best combination to get the fastest speed for your camera and flash system.

  • what about studio strobes flash or no-TTL flash? can they sync on high speed also?

  • @DX2007ccs High Speed flash sync relies on special switching circuitry that is part of the speed light. The circuit switch, known as an IGBT, enables switching the flash on and off and a very fast rate to provide the multi-burst that is used for HSS flash. Manual flashes and studio flash units are not designed to do this. That said, PocketWizard has another way to achieve faster than normal flash sync called HyperSync.

  • I didn't used to be able to do this with the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 when they first came out but I updated my firmware and now can do high speed sync all the way up to 1/8000!

    This rocks!

  • great video, always wanted to know how to sync at high speeds

  • Fantastic video!!! Thank you!!

  • Excellent and informative tutorial. I have just one question, how do you set the lighting ratio between two flasheads using the flex? Normally you'd dial it on via the speedlite or the ST-E2 if you use one.

  • I can get high speed in 5D or just 1d cameras?

  • Highspeed Sync is something that your Flash does not your camera. The 480exii and 580exii both have High Speed Sync. So in theory you can do this on a 5D, Xsi, 7D ect.

  • Great video! Keep it up - you are awesome

  • really great tutorials
