@jasetraber I have a feeling even the most avid Squares viewer was tempted to bail before the first commercial break because of that "YAAAAAAAAY!" I'm sure the sponsors loved it as well.
I can't believe nobody has commented on 1) how Dr. Ruth was trying to read her answer of Los Angeles Lakers by looking down at a note and #2) How each star picked their corresponding square on the jeopardy board. Notice Richard Simmons takes center Steve allen takes bottom right. And it goes on and on. Obviosuly the stars knew their questions beforehand!
Thanks. They didn't usually say it on this version, but the celebs got help developing their bluffs by getting info about their questions (though they don't hear the actual ones until the game starts).
I never knew the late singer Lou Rawls appeared on this version of HS. I know he appeared on Peter Marshall's version and I forgot if he appeared on tom Bergeron's version or not.
Also on that second to last week of season one, the third game started being worth $1000 or $200 per square if time ran out. Other home games plugged around this time on Squares included: Wheel., J!, TPIR, Newlywed Game, and on this week of shows, Dr. Ruth's Game of Good Sex. IIRC the MB game based on Davidson Squares that came out the following year was rarely if ever plugged on the show, but the c. 1988 Gametek computer game was plugged during the second half of the third season.
On that second to last week of season one, Shadoe returned to the show after leaving for about four months to make a movie called I think Traxx that never got released IIRC. His brother Richard filled in as announcer.
This was the first full week Shadoe Stevens appeared on Hollywood Squares as a celebrity guest (he appeared on the Friday show of the premiere week. Shadoe didn't become a regular until the second-to-last-week of season one.)

Why was there a curtain behind John?
tpir1972 3 months ago
Don't read the comments much? It concealed the Jeopardy board!

I love Roseanne, but her constant "YAAAAAAAAY!" was annoying!

@jasetraber I think Richard Simmons was YAAAAAAAAY-ing along with Roseanne, doubling the annoyance!

I like how they moved the stars around a lot at first.

@zachhoran From what I've read, "Traxx" ended up being a direct-to-video release in the United States.

You've been uploading a lot of mid-80s shows lately.
I might have missed something, but what's with the curtain behind John?
Hondo20132 4 months ago
It concealed the board of answers for the first game.
gamelover1949 4 months ago
@gamelover1949 - aaaah the revealing of the answers behind the curtain, Classic Art Fleming Jeopardy! style! NICE!

Yeah, that was a very nice retro touch.
