3 Original members - Daevid Gilli Smythe and Didier Malherbe don't know the drummer, but could be Pip Pyle from Here & now... guitar is Stephi Sharpstrings and Keith de missile bass from Here & Now original line up.
Ever wonder why the place was half full? '77 is when Pierre ran the show with all of the original musicians gone. Empty years there for Gong. Without Daevid, Didier, Tim and Steve, Gong was an empty shell.
It was an excellent gig, but highly oppressive due to the studio regulations (No smoking, drinking, or fannying about!) I was the one shouting "BECAUSE!" On "I've bin stoned before"
As my life got increasingly worse, I was considering ending it. But I was listening to Gong's YOU album and was on sprinkling of clouds when I suddenly started laughing! Who cares?! WHO CARES?!?! I felt like shouting! Thank you Gong! And thank you Daevid!
And Pip Pyle, He wasn't in the original line up, but he was an old Gong head. *Pierre Moerlen was meant to be there, but due to being ripped off contractually big time, he couldn't, much to my dismay when I turned up there in Nottingham!)
For me Gong had a very limited period when they were really great...this TV film is already a long while after that and it features very safe performances of their peak material. Gong reunion gigs are very like Butlins 60's band nights only sadder...You cannot recapture the mid 70's and frankly you should not want to...just say NO you know it makes sense...
While I definitely agree that Gong had a peak in their music during the early-mid 70's, you can't shun them for getting up and fucking playing an awesome show!!!!!
So, burgersoft, all I've got to say is... have a cup of tea! No no, just have a another one! Have a cup of tea!!!
Really impressed by Didier Malherbe's work on the Yamaha WX7. At one time I was tempted to buy one, but it's much harder to control than a real sax and you need an assortment of effects to maximize its potential. Guess the WX7 is no longer in production, but I can't imagine a better ad for it than this segment of the concert!
Gong with the wind? NEVER!!! Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth are permanent residents of Lothlorien - long live their ageless funkiness! I've been a citizen of Planet Gong since 1970 and it brings tears of JOY to me eyes to see these videos... Instruments of Love indeedy! :-)
I'm curious about the ages of the people who'v posted comments here. p.s. I'm 45 and remember Gong first time round. Its weird how these cigarettes improve the pleasure of listening to this vid and Gong in genral
@Rael39 I'm 45 but I only discovered them about a year ago. I had vaguely heard the name, but never really knew anything about them. It shows you can always discover something "new", even if it is an older band so never look back. They are for me now one of my three favourite groups of all time. As for the Floyd/Gong comparisons there is simply no contest. Gong blow Floyd off the planet.
@keith904A God Ive just realized I posted that comment 4 years ago. Time is definitely speeding up. Thats scary. Anyway thanks for the response. Bands like Gong are still influencing music today. Just ahve a listen to Shpongle.
erm maybe i dont get it toooo many mushroom teas in the past m8 and too many acids yeahman they are a great band there will never be another gong, but bring back steve hillage to the line up:)

The current image of Daevid Allen on Wikipedia shows him wearing a t-shirt with the words "NOBODY KNOWS I'M A LESBIAN"
