I love all the song and dance in Sweet Charity, Fosse was a genius supported by Verdon the greatest Dancer. The movie had one of the greatest casts including many great dancers and the greatest actress of all time (cos she done it all so well) Shirley flanked by Rivera and Paula Kelly. Could well be the greatest movie of all time despite the ending which i never watch the countless amount of times I do watch it. Got me beat how Cabaret still rates higher?
Check out how VJTOMYAZ put this clip to the B52's Dancing Now from their last album Funplex. Its amazing and it does make the dance routine look absolutely straight from today's videos
what i think is so cool about this is that people thought this was avante garde and just so completely fresh and new and modern. it's also cool making the parallel of that's how i feel when i'm watching stuff like america's best dance crew or a really pretty lyrical piece.
these dancers were so good! the choreo is really cool by fosse of course. Very sharp and well executed, and those wrists woaah lol. Nigel Lithgoe was in this? How awesome is that?
YO it's so way ahead of it's time. I heard when it was first aired on television they couldn't show below the waist because some of the hip movements was too sexual for it's time.....This is a great piece.
Suzanne Charny is the coolest here. Look at how fluid her hand movements are and I love how the fact that's she wearing white gloves really creates a striking image that catches your eye. That's why Bob Fosse was such a genius.
Thanks so much for this post. I've been looking for this for months. The lead female dancer in this number is Suzanne Charny, one of my original crushes when she used to do the late night American talk shows and I'd stay up way past my bedtime to catch her sexy dancing.
This is the best; as said before, its the small movements like the hand gestures that make it genius. You can watch it again and again and see something new.
Fosse's choreography and Suzanne Charney's precise work (with those gloves)is astounding. Watch this and try doing it yourself. Holy Moly! This sequence is beyond amazing to me.
I hope no one is offended by Beyonce's (choreographer's) rip/inspirations as Mr. Fosse's inspiration/rip was from the popular the popular dance blacks were doing "back in the day". Seems like a proper circle.
You're absolutely right. Elements of the boogaloo were definitely incorporated into the choreography from about 2:35 to 3:13. I remember that dance well.
And I mean the old-school boogaloo from the 1960s, not the dance that the kids are doing today and calling the boogaloo (which is all fine and good, but still looks like hip-hop dancing to me).
This is sooo amazing, I'm kinda obsessed with it right now, lol. I watch it like 500 times a day, and make everybody watch it lol. I'm doing a painting of of like 1:32 ish. cus I'm soo in love with it

love love sweet charity. and absolutely wish i could've had 1/10 of Fosse's talent. And honestly it would be an insult to choreagraph it to any other song. No pun towards Beyonce, but dancing Fosse to another song that has nothing to do with it is an insult. Even if she was paying "homage", bah. Don't get me wrong, she's very talented. But you can't copy Fosse. You just can't.
The reason you have blading men in this scene is because Bob Fosse, an actual visionary, was more concerned with the quality of his dancers, not their age or 'look'. Both Emma's & Beyonce's videos required several people to do the jobs that Mr. Fosse did alone. That's complicated. So are his moves. They require more control, line and exquisite form than most could possibly comprehend.

Emma Bunton's version is more to Fosses. However, there is very 'inspiration'. She's just a cute blond doing a cheap knock off imitation.
Beyonce's version is different, inspired, fresh, more rhythmic, and souled out.
Fosse's work and dance routines anybody can do . That's why you've got balding middle age men all throughout these numbers. Creative - somewhat. Complicated - HELL NO!
obviously u never tried fossy style, it takes so much t do fossy style u have no idea, I HATE HATE HATE when people make judgment when they dont even know the hardwork behind it.

right, yall muthfuckas always have some hating shit to say about beyonce..how bout read an article or watch a interview or two, b4 you speak. Beyonce said WAY B4 her GMB video came out, that her inspiration was this play, and this was her way to pay homage to a classic as a sign of respect..
The "instructional" dance-oriented video is inspired by the 60s choreographies. Beyoncé cites influences from the legendary Broadway director-choreographer Bob Fosse, Southern and Jamaican movement and the Frug from the musical Sweet Charity. She said, "It tells you how to do all the dances — it's modern, it's retro, it's vintage, it's stylized, it's all of those things put together."
beyonce never said it was her big idea!! dumb ass she was on an iterview talking about the orginal video and how she wanted her video to look like this!!

swaingles 3 years ago
Don't know if they had more than a professional relationship, but I'd say it's a distinct possibility, considering Fosse's womanizing reputation.
I'd sure nail any babe who looked like that and could move like that, given half a chance.
