But then, I jog on snowy, bleak, rural roads (cf. "FrozenRoad" video -- we can still see it) and come here and post about my glamorous life -- I am slave to my lies, to others as well as to myself.
@Rasputin443556, I foolishly believe that I am having a 'conversation' with you despite the fact that your post was deposited here a year ago -- I am nothing short of a queer hebephrene, a gay puer.
In terms of military street cred, the two were about even. Buckley may have served as an infantry officer, but he never made it overseas. Vidal served in the Aleutians as a warrant officer in an Air Corps search-and-rescue crew, but never saw action.
Why is it that the right, whenever it begins to lose its rhetorical advantage, inevitably falls back on threats of violence? Jeez, Buckley. Gonna punch someone in the face for calling you names? Gee, that's a strong position. Not unlike the Bush refusal to meet with Iran or Hamas. Just threaten them and that'll solve things. Brilliant. By the way, Reagan met with Gorbachev and Nixon with Mao, were they weak? Or shrewd?
Nixon didn't meet with China until the Shanghai communique was written and Reagan didn't meet with Gorbachev until we had leverage over the Soviet Union.
and my theme in my comments from the beginning is that our agressive peace through strength and military buildup and nuclear standoff, star wars rhetoric, and evil empire rhetoric was so necessary and healthy for our survival and winning with reagan against the communist soviet aunion helped to defeat them...and i bet that gore vidal and people that argue on his lines would have made fun of reagan's strategies.. gore vidal is good at missing the big picture
Oh no. What that does it leave a country with lots of bombs and no where to explode them. That also leads to a drug user-drug peddler relationship: weapon makers instill fear of attack to sell their wares to the government. Aggressive peace is a contradiction. I am all for defense of freedom. What I am against is forcing freedom on other countries. We should defend our soil and not defend the interests of corporations in foriegn lands.
i'm glad we have been overall agressive against communism because of the influence of buckley, reagan... we have defeated communism in the Soviet Union.. and former communist countries are under reform to our type of systems... giving in to capitalism as well and our concepts of free trade..even China and Vietnam are turning to capitalism
Communism has failed across the globe.. maybe Gore Vidal just didn't get the bigger picture of good and evil, clouded mentally, as he took it up the butt
Hold on. You support democracy, an idea that allows everyone to be heard and treated--in theory--equally, and yet you do not allow communism to exist? Ehh....right.
i support freedom of speech-like your example of a communist's freedom of expression in the united states and abroad. just like the freedom of a muslim fanatic who preaches for worldwide domination through a caliphate to sharia law-- but both communisma and sharia law can easily be defeated in a free society by exposing their philosophies..which don't allow for democracy, freedom of expression, freedom of speech... the new enemy, islamic sharia states, are worthy of defeat and ridicule
But you make no sense. Because you want to use force to reduce communism. Democracy is against force by defintion. Either you have to relinquish democracy as your principle or use another principle for being against communism and "muslim fanaticism".
no, you're assuming too much. sometimes force is necessary-it's a complicated world
reagan didn't have to use force to beat the soviet union but he built up our military.. our government is using capitalism to overcome communism in China..
vietnam from president kennedy and president johnson turned out like a bad idea.. now vietnam wants to turn to capitalism and free trade like china
look at what china is doing to youtube there this sunday--communist china is shutting off youtube in china
What? My whole point was that it is a complicated world. That is why this whole democracy versus non-democratic states can not be reduced to us versus them mentality. China is the largest holder of US currency at the moment. Do you think the US can afford to engage China in any hostile actions? What have communists done to you to be against them?
through influence of our systems, democracy, free trade, ideas, free press... hopefully by exposing their population to these ideas they will turn democratic..China has not been outwardly agressive militarily throughout its history..
About sharia law though-- the Taliban theocracy cannot exist with democracy and freedom of religion...Don't you see the head on collision?? current theocracies don't go with freedoms.. sometimes war is necessary
For words to mean anything we can't use them anyway we like: Buckley was almost a Libertarian; the mode of political thought that is the most anti-authoritarian. His supreme allegiance was to the church. Gore Vidal is a liberal, the most authoritarian mode of American political thought. Now, which is closer to Naziism?
if someone called me a crypto-nazi i would threaten blast them in the face and if it didnt stop theyd pick their teeth off the floor. hows that any worse than a racial comment?
I think the term crypto-nazi described Buckley rather well. Maybe it hit to close to home and that's why he made the threat. Otherwise you just laugh that off or use your wit to make the accuser look like an idiot.
Yea, yea, yea, everyone on the Right is a secret Nazi. More brilliant analysis by the Left. So who are you voting for this year, dolina? Hope, Change, or Both?
Right. And that's why Vidal lives outside of the U.S. most of the time, correct? Vidal is as pink as they come. His former pals, Rod Serling knew enough to fight fascism by serving in the armed forces. He knew government control when he saw it in Germany. He illustrated such fears in his Twilight Zone series. Vidal, on the other hand, just criticized America and ran away. True colors shown.
Curt300: Crypto-Nazi because he hid it but you have to call these people what they are. Nazis feel they are superior and they want to govern the world at all costs and take anything they want. Buckley has always supported this ideology and so have many others on the right. You want something just go and take it like the Nazis did. There is oil in Iraq right? OK so lets make up an excuse to go get it. Lets pretend we are helping just like the Nazis did.
Curt300: I agree that I gave a poor definition of Nazi but that's the general idea in my simple words. You can look Nazi up on Wikipedia if you want to be more exact. Of course Buckley was born too late and in the wrong country to be a true Nazi but he is the typical fascist type and he always supported the worst actions of his country with no regard for the harm they caused. Fascists and Nazis are like that.
Curt: How can I be in over my head? This is youtube. There is no in over your head on youtube! As for Buckley I know he supported the war in Vietnam. I know he supported right wing dictators all over the world. I know he threatened Vidal in this clip. Typical Nazi fascist type who hated anything left wing at all costs. He would feel at home had he been born in Germany at the right time, you can't deny that. I know he wasn't all bad though. At least he admitted Iraq was a mistake.
dolina64: Of course I can deny that. Mr Buckley was a small l libertarian. There was nothing Nazi or fascist about him. And there was nothing typical about him. He was an original.
You shouldn't be so sure Curt. It would take a leftist to be against the Nazis before the world knew what they were. I can't imagine Buckley being against them if he were a German during WW2. I base this on his views on Nazi type actions taken by this country such as invading Vietnam and supporting right wing dictators all over the world at the expense of millions of innocent lives.
he would have grown up in a different culture and would not be who he was. But if he was transplanted he would have probably gone to a concentration camp with Dietrich Bonhoffer and other rightist resistance to the leftist Nazi's
The Nazi's were not leftists! It may have started as some kind of socialist movement but we all know they were right wing fascists. They killed how many million communists in Russia? Did they kill any right wing fascists in Italy or Spain? No, those were their allies! It doesn't matter what they called themselves or how they started. Look at their actions!
Who took us in to Vietnam? A liberal democrat president, JFK. Who kept us in? Another liberal democrat president, LBJ. Who got us out? A conservative republican president, Nixon. Who do the liberals call an anti-christ, even though liberals don't believe in god? Nixon.
Evidence to support the claim never to listen to a liberal.
Calling Democrats Liberals is ridiculous. As Vidal once said. The USA has 2 parties and they are both right wing with one being more extreeme than the other. Amazing in a country with so many choices that in politics there are so few.
You are really out on a limb. Back then Nazi had more meaning because liberals had not used up its meaning no pointless ad hominem attacks over the years.
Look closely and you would realize that the National Socialist movement of Germany was in fact leftist despite what you were taught in you liberal poli sci class at a university.
Nazi's believed that the family was a political structure but that is the only thing vaughly rightist about their platform.
Nazis are also racist anti-semites, charges you cannot accuse Buckley of. Just because Vidal is a great man, doesn't mean he's correct or morally justified in calling Buckley a "crypto-nazi". That's an ad hominem attack.
Furthermore, dolina, your definition of "Nazi" is far too general and lacking in historical insight.
I pity you and your ignorance no more than I pity you your willingness to swallow the liberal indoctrination. Travel the world and see the inaccuracies of your statements. Then turn off your electric computer, your electric TV, your electric cell phone, and all your other vitals that you rely on that rely on oil. Then repeat what you said...to the dark night air.
Even 40 years ago the Left's tactic was to start namecalling. Vidal is lucky the former WWII vet and former CIA agent didn't give him a good bitch-slapping.
"Vidal is disgusting and Buckley is honorable and accurate!" ?WTF are you talking about? Buckley calls Vidal a queer and threatens to punch him. Is that honorable? Get your head out of your ass.
If Buckley were born in Germany and had been there for WW2 what do you think he would have been? OK maybe he doesn't wear the uniform but he has the attitude.
I miss Bill Buckley. That man was an American hero, an inspiration to both my father and my idol, Rush. Were it not for him, I may be screaming "Their bodies, their choices" at pro-choice rallies.

Edo clearly you are not aware of the lack of intellect you are engaging with here. Anyone who can even fathom WFB as second-rate on anything especially debate is beneath retort.
Great Buckley quote was back in the 60's when Buckley was asked once why Robert F. Kennedy avoided going on his television show. Buckley replied, "Why does the meat avoid the grinder?"
Obviously you didn't pay attention. Buckley says "Don't interrupt me, you crypto-Nazi" and Vidal responds "The only crypto-Nazi I can think of is you." Listen to the video instead of jumping to defense of the man who defended fascists such as Franco.
Vidal says nothing, but refuses to shut his mouth. Buckley tries to argue and Vidal says he's right because other people agree with him, which - for the record - is a logical fallacy.
P.S., for the slur to make any sense, it would have to read, "Conservatism is a mental illness," since 'conservative' is an adjective and cannot "be" anything.
All political ideology is just a means to an end.You are being used as a means for other peoples ends.Don't align yourself with any political movement no matter how sweet its rethoric.
Actually may I correct you in that Vidal is the model of liberalis and especially the newer leftists who merely seek to shut all ideas of opposition entirely.
Liberals only seek to silence them via political correctness.

Buckley was the one who interrupted Vidal.
Buckley was the one who first brought in the Nazi analogy, when nothing to do with the Nazis or World War Two was discussed.
Buckley was the one who claimed that Vidal "didn't care" about American soldiers.
Buckley was the one who threatened violence.
Buckley was the one who brought Myra Breckenridge into the picture, which again had nothing to do with Vietnam.
And the sad truth is Buckley is nowhere near as loathsome as the current right-wingers.

Obviously you didn't pay attention. Buckley says "Don't interrupt me, you crypto-Nazi" and Vidal responds "The only crypto-Nazi I can think of is you." Listen to the video instead of jumping to defense of the man who defended fascists such as Franco.

I feel the same way. It's obvious Buckley interrupted Vidals summation/presentation of his position. Vidal shoved it back into Buckleys face.
Vidal often got the best of Buckley.

Buckley was a Nazi at heart, born in the wrong era and wrong country.

The look on Gore's face is priceless, but it's also hilarious when he just says "shut up a minute".

So true. I really, honestly think he's either scared to death of actually being hit, or looking forward to it. I can't decide which it is.

vidal owns buckley. What an idealistic straussian piece of filth Buckley is. Conservative is a mental illness.
kelt65 4 years ago
Vidal says nothing, but refuses to shut his mouth. Buckley tries to argue and Vidal says he's right because other people agree with him, which - for the record - is a logical fallacy.
P.S., for the slur to make any sense, it would have to read, "Conservatism is a mental illness," since 'conservative' is an adjective and cannot "be" anything.

All political ideology is just a means to an end.You are being used as a means for other peoples ends.Don't align yourself with any political movement no matter how sweet its rethoric.

Vidal is typical of liberals with no substance - talk over your opponent.
drivingjack 4 years ago 3
Actually may I correct you in that Vidal is the model of liberalis and especially the newer leftists who merely seek to shut all ideas of opposition entirely.
Liberals only seek to silence them via political correctness.

Haha. Love it. How long did it take you to come up with that cross reference? Looks right outta the Chomsky book. What page?
