Ashtanga teachers shouldn't be answering questions about Iyengar yoga. the comment about breath is really funny. In Iyengar, pranayama is incredibly important - the asanas are done to tune your body for pranayama. Saying the Iyengar method is not dynamic is also very humorous. The action is happening in the muscles, ligament, joints, skin, organs and cells. Props aside, the Iyengar method teaches you to access your outer body so you can access your inner body so can access..it keeps going...
I thought iyengar and ashtanga were just two branches or hatha yoga, but in this video the differences are being enfatized, and it seems like both teachers don't really think Iyengar is a proper practice. Too bad, because there's no better or worse, just searching for mind+body+spirit to connect. Sadly competition enters even in the heart of peaceful practices such as yoga.
@CosimaWasp So agree! It sort of reminds me how different religious branches claim that their way is the most true and righteous and it's the only way. I found something similar with different yoga schools. I wish they would infuse their practice with elements of "other" schools, for the ultimate goal is the same. Yoga should not be trivialized by "competition".
i don't think "passive" is a good characteristic for Iyengar yoga. Iyengar yoga is systematic and precise, you start with ropes and blocks and gradually move to dynamic yoga. some think it is boring because seemingly there is less dynamics in Iyengar yoga, but it is not true.
its cool to see you guys in my living room! the next best thing to having you in town (well, sorta!) im moving to the east coast for a job but hope to catch up with you sometime in the future
