Great song! I'm working on this song for my fifth grade BIG presentation! ( But some words are different) But it still IS a GREAT SONG! No dout abot it!!! It truely is amazing!!1 Oh, I can go aon, and on about this song! "Rosa sat, so martin could walk. Martian walked, so we could run. We run, he runs and she runs so that all we children can fly..." The chours to the song I'm singing( with a few others) withj the changed part!!! NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for telling me this! Your chorus is great! I look forward to the lyrics. Let your teacher know that I'm honored she has chosen to use my song as a pathway to your own writing. I'd love to read more of your classmates' poems!

beautiful, Amy, thank you! your song and and Barack Obama, helps us all to see the vision of the dream of Dr.Martin Luther King. May we all say and mean, God bless America!
Amy, I heard you sing this with Anna Crusis Women's Choir in Philadelphia last Saturday. I've been sharing it with everyone. Fabulous song and message. What a difference each of us can make. Thank you.
On election night, Novemvber 2008, my cousin sent me a text message "Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk; Martin walked so Barack Obama could run. Obama ran so our children could fly... On Martin Luther King Holiday, I revised my cousin's text and added pictures and sent it to all of my email colleagues and you revised it and made it better. I wished I could have done this earlier; but, I would add the song "Change gonna come".
Don't think I ever received your email with pictures on MLK Day. Put this up before that. But with such an inspiring quote, it's something that folks just respond to, isn't it?
This is a beautiful arrangement. The voice is a perfect sound for this message song, but even if the voice wasn't as great, it would still bring a tear to my eye. Thankyou for putting this on the web! Fantastic!
I was so surprised to see my son "flying" on my feet in this video!! That was 25 years ago and it truly captures my intentions for him and all our children - the faith in a world that is willing to help them to fly!! BEAUTIFUL song and we're honored to be a part of its imagery!
I echo Sabolynn's comment. I want some way to share this with my school children. The words are great; the rhythm challenging, but I would love to teach it to them!
Does anyone know where I can find this video besides on YouTube? I want to show it to my students, but my school blocks it. Maybe the creator of this video could email it to me? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I voted for Nader -- being the old rebel that I am -- but I loved this. To not be deeply moved by this beautiful song and video. . . well - something important would have to be missing in one's psyche.
Beautiful, inspirational words and music that captures the optimism and hope that Obama's election and his brilliant leadership gives us all. Thank you!
Lovely. Wonderful way to begin African American History Month by showing the linkages and benefits of the struggles of Black People as intricately connected to, and an affirmation of the positive struggles by whites and all races for justice, peace and advancing the humanity of all people.
I am awake, grounded, centrist/moderate/ independent. I am still hopeful and still moved by the wave of postive energy worldwide. How can a black man (or a biracial man) get a seat at the table without "playing the game?" Without knowledge of anything but white privilege or non-white oppression how can anyone judge what this man has accomplished? Time will tell, and I am rooting for him. I envision positive change. Such an obviously capable, intelligent and compassionate *human* being.
tears.i'm 63 and lived through so much. i marched in boston with martin luther king and i was there ,by chance, the day he died.this song brings it all back and is such a wonderful reminder that there is always hope.
Without hope we have nothing. Obama g ives up that. It is then up to ourselves to make it work for us. Of course he is not a the cure for all things, but he gives us the impetus to believe In YES WE CAN. To all the naysayers.go back and find your own answers. We k now that we have to work to bring forth hope. What do you have?
I am enjoying this... however, these lyrics have already been circulating around the internet and not from this particular musician. Anyway, still nice. Thanks for sharing.
I will never claim to have written the words to the chorus, although I did adapt them somewhat. That quote has been around for quite a while (see my sources for the quote in 'more info'). But I did write the words to all the verses and the music for this song.
Oh, I forgot to put on my Obama goggles while watching this...
PATRIOT act, FISA, bailout, bombing Pakistan, I think folks need to do a little more research here before bowing down to this political messiah.
Regarding Guantanamo, Iraq, employee rights to sue for employer wrongdoing, are sugar coating for the giveaway to Wall Street, a quid pro quo to avert opposition from his Democratic Party constituency.
He's no Rosa or MLK, his cabinet is enough to give one pause... wake up people!!
Yes, people, as wonderful on the surface as this is for Blacks and for all those who never thought they'd see this day; we need to wake up to the truth about this world. Stop being so gullible and easily manipulated away from the truth. This is a bitter sweet "victory" for me because I know the truth behind Barack Obama! See beneath the surface, peel back the layers of lies and manipulations. On the surface I believe Obama is a decent man and I believe he believes what he is saying but wake up!
Obama has always said we must work in order to fly and obtained his objectives by just that - hard and honest work. Obama will prove his greatness through his honesty.
Wow you Obama worshipers are in for a rude awakening. Our children won't be flying. They'll be working their asses off trying to pay off all this money we're spending.
MLK and Obama do not belong in the same sentence. MLK was a great man. Obama is a great politician.
AD King, Martin's younger brother, was my classmate in High School. I participate in the March on Washington organized by Bayard Rustin at which MLK made his famous speech, and I was in Memphis the day before MLK's funeral to stand with thousands to declare his dream was still alive. Obama is a testimony to Hope embraced even then, and not giving up if the reality of change emerges slowly. What a lesson for future generations!
thank you amy, rosa, martin, barack & each one of you reading this. every inspiration communication will create and hold our new time safe. this is a window of time when all hearts are coming together in trust and respect. dream it. breathe it as you live it. be it. these are the best days of our lives.
OK, she sat, he marched, he ran and he won. Now the children can fly.
Question is, did we not have the chance to fly before now? Time to get to work and take advantage of the opportunities available to us & our children and no more look for fault.
Time to fly - on my own - on our own - on your own. Don't expect the government to carry you. That isn't part of the deal. That isn't why Rosa walked - that's not why Martin walked. The opportunity is here. Time to fly, if you want to.

Nah - he heard it somewhere, I heard it somewhere else, we both came to it from different ways. I think it's from a congressman from Louisiana originally.
@marsh820 wait...the more I think about it, that doesn't pass the sniff test. the senator said ""Rosa Parks sat down so we could stand up. Martin Luther King marched so Jesse Jackson could run. Jesse Jackson ran so Obama could win." I don't think that the two of you could end up with the same translation, and Jay Z is a reputed plagiarizer. In hip hop it's called biting. I believe you've been bit.
@t3rr3nc388 - thanks, but nah - Jay Z said he heard it somewhere, but it wasn't from me. I've made it clear from the beginning that I read this quote and heard it quite often before the election and felt it needed to be part of a song. Some folks have said it comes from a single mom in upstate New York. Haven't gotten that substantiated as of yet, but I will never take credit for the actual quote itself, just for the song I wrote from its inspiration.
Loved it! As the white mother of an African American son, I am particularly thrilled about Barack's victory. Not only because he's African American, but because he was the clearly superior candidate and his race did not prevent the voters of the US from choosing him. I am grateful to have lived to see this happen. I know we have far to go, but we've come a long long way!
Barack's election is like a weight of stupidity and mean spiritedness being lifted. Many of us experience a lightness of being, a jauntier step, a better sleep. No one anticipated the effect that this would have on our national conscience, and indeed on an international appreciation.
The significance goes beyond all the comments I've read. It isn't about the black community. It isn't about a "black man running for President." It is about ALL OF US. "the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness." Black, white, brown or purple. Male, female, or other.
Deb, your comments illuminated the implications of this song. Your anger rang out loud and clear. There are those of us who could not fly. President Obama offers hope to us. So, it is about Black, brown, female and others who have been oppressed in this society and the world. If you were not so blinded by your own hate and insecurities, you would realize this.
You've misread my comments. My comment was that it is not about just one group, but about Obama representing all the oppressed, including me. You must be seeing your own anger, cuz there's none in my post. P.S. I ran our local "campaign for change" office and was featured in numerous international news articles about our office, being in a battleground state. I was and remain an Obama supporter before you probably had even heard his name.
This video is straight. Yall need to check out Vthov's music though if you haven't... He lays down pure fire. Search "Vthov Obama Inauguration Song" and you'll see what I'm talking about. He's the truth.
Go to 2:34, hit the pause button, and observe. This shot clearly shows the joy that the black community shares. Is it good, is it meaningful and is it a turning point for our society?
That shot, framed, could well be hung in Obama's new quarters, as it potrays well a new feeling among minorities. Regarding changes in US policy, improvements in health care, and other needed societal renovations ... I am optimistic.
Odd responses for this video once again.

Different kind of flying and sometimes it takes a bit more then just wanting to fly to achieve what you want.

Wow, didn't think there would be a comment worth a toss, but you pretty much nailed it. +10000 for KIR5679 and vicki.

Nah - he heard it somewhere, I heard it somewhere else, we both came to it from different ways. I think it's from a congressman from Louisiana originally.

oh.. coool
kiggaroo 3 years ago
@marsh820 wait...the more I think about it, that doesn't pass the sniff test. the senator said ""Rosa Parks sat down so we could stand up. Martin Luther King marched so Jesse Jackson could run. Jesse Jackson ran so Obama could win." I don't think that the two of you could end up with the same translation, and Jay Z is a reputed plagiarizer. In hip hop it's called biting. I believe you've been bit.
t3rr3nc388 5 months ago

No one anticipated the effect that this would have on our national conscience, and indeed on an international appreciation.
pfeld 3 years ago
That "lightness of being, a jauntier step" you mention can be described as hope. Once again we have hope, and a renewed faith. I'm still giddy. ;-)

Deb2me81 3 years ago 3
Deb, your comments illuminated the implications of this song. Your anger rang out loud and clear. There are those of us who could not fly. President Obama offers hope to us. So, it is about Black, brown, female and others who have been oppressed in this society and the world. If you were not so blinded by your own hate and insecurities, you would realize this.
YGBForever 3 years ago
You've misread my comments. My comment was that it is not about just one group, but about Obama representing all the oppressed, including me. You must be seeing your own anger, cuz there's none in my post. P.S. I ran our local "campaign for change" office and was featured in numerous international news articles about our office, being in a battleground state. I was and remain an Obama supporter before you probably had even heard his name.
