I don't think any artist in history has accomplished what Daniel has, living the life that he has lived and accumulating so much heartfelt and completely unique music. I feel like a real human being when I listen to him.
What a damaged genius. Years and years of hard living and terrible medications...what a shame, he looks terrible. But I'll always adore Daniel and his wonderful music.
His talent and wisdom are out of this world...these stuff overshadow his ailment and unconventional physical appearance. A true artist without the frills...
bullshit, I've hung out with Daniel many times and he's told me that he wants to be famous. I say "but Daniel, you are famous" and he replies "I'll be famous when I can buy a house". A few years ago he finally got to buy a house, where he lives with his parents.but it is for love as well.
i have a special bound whit his music and his drawings , i suffer from manic depressions to. i also draw and make music (not as good as him, but still) , its the best drugs for people like us.
this made me really happy, just seeing what a kind heart he has and how beautiful of a soul he is. but it also made me tear up because of his incessant shaking, it's heartbreaking. this guy induces a lot of emotions, i can tell you that.
Daniel , you are a beautiful soul and a light on this planet. I wish for you to be healed with Love, good food and natural medicine.......necessary ~but pharmaceuticals are extremely toxic to the body.....I would love to see you receive healing bodywork, acupuncture, sound healing and lots of leafy green veggies and yummy healing foods ~at the very least it could counteract all the meds potential damage to the organs...liver, kidneys~ Hope your taking Milk Thistle ; )) I Love You !!!!
Guess it's likely he takes anti-psychotics.. that's got to zap his creativity and manic energy. The medication might benefit him in some ways too I guess... hard to tell b/c he was definitely suffering in his unmedicated days but he was simultaneously very creative and motivated.
He must have Tardive Dyskinesia , a condition results from long term use of the medication he takess to treat his mental illness. It is sad because he is also a graphic artist & it clearly impairs his ability to draw well as you see in this video.. It's a shame but if you ever see the movie you can see why he is on the meds... he is a fascinating person
@ilemonga no he doesnt. he has bipolar disorder and ive read interviews about how he started shaking like that when he was recording fun after he got out of the mental hospital. i think its really from the medication and stuff.
@ilemonga just bipolar and i think he shakes from the medication he takes. he said something about he was shaking really bad when he was recording fun after he got out of the mental hospital. oh and i just read that he had a seizure once. maybe that has something to do with it.
@davlon0 yeah, certain psychiatric medications cause a condition called tardive dyskinesia, where you develop muscle tremors, tics, and shakes. so it's probably his meds.
If you REALLY want to add some substance to your argument, try citing an example of artist who has not only gained international notoriety as a deeply profound artist despite having no obvious depth or profoundity whatsoever (because ANYONE can do it, right?), but has also attained that notoriety with as little media exposure as Daniel Johnston.
In order for you to prove that it is "possible in principle" for ANYONE (even Fred Durst) to gain international notoriety as a deeply profound artist, you need to give examples - hell, at least try and give ONE example - of an artist who has attained that notoriety due entirely to random coincidence...to show that no actual depth or profundity is required to be PERCEIVED as such. Until you do that, your argument is baseless conjecture, nothing more.
Organised religions infiltrate the minds of the masses via centuries of aggressive indoctrination, spread by hundreds of thousands of priests, missionaries, mullahs and so on.
Are some musical artists marketed as aggressively? Sure, if you're talking about Britney Spears...but the suggestion that someone as low key as Daniel Johnston is pervasive enough to inspire delusional support for his music on a mass scale is outrageous indeed.
Firstly, music IS a form of art. Secondly, the fallacy of your argument is the assumption that we identify music with great emotional reasonance entirely at random. We don't. When people talk about the depth and profundity of an artist, they tend to base that on the depth and profoundity of their personal experience of listening to that artist's songs.
Can you show me a music fan who's been moved to tears by Fred Durst?
@MaxwellsAttourney There is a reason that Dylan is an internationally loved and revered Icon, superstar, singer songwriter, voice of a generation and Buckethead is Buckethead.
Technical ability itself does not have much depth or emotional appeal.
anyone criticizing Daniel Johnston needs to start his life all over again and this time KEEP his brain and heart and whole body open to improvement! I feel for everyone that is INCAPABLE of seeing the poetry in daniel's work. What a person to be missing out on, what a shame.
The essence of music never was, and never will be about "who is the most skilled". Songwriting is not an Olympic sport. The most beautiful melodies are rarely the most complex. Great singing is not about who can hit the highest note.
The essence of music is in the artist's ability to translate the depth and breadth of their soul into song. THAT is what makes Daniel special.
@jamesandjackproducts Anti psychotics are some of the most toxic substances you can put into your body and the side effects range from lethal heart block and seizures to permanent ticks and movement disorders that persist even after the meds have been discontinued. I'm not too familiar with Johnston's medical history so I'm not certain that the shaking is a side effect of meds or some other issue
his shaking hands could be a result of a life of medication. these symptoms kept him from playing on his own album with Atlantic Records...not sure if it's permanent...read about it in a book on his music and art.
ah just so you know he is motivated by fame if you read, watch or listen to anything about or by him you would know that his dream is to be famous before he dies. "I have no celebrity status yet..."
@Jackson19675425166W Im sure he'd get a kick out of making it BIG, but as far as Im concerned hes far more important than any mainstream crappy artist, and god knows he'd still make music even if no one got to hear hit, music and art and creating is like a therapy to so many people, and fame is not his main motivation any one who really listens to the music knows that
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hipster idolize this guy, only because they were told too. hipsters have no individuality or individual thought, they do what they think is cool. and obviously this retarded guy is in there "coolness" scene. jesus wtf, idk if kurt cobain was a fan, this guy is mentally retarded.
The reason he's so popular is because he writes music for no other purpose than for love...it's so pure and innocent. He's not motivated by money or fame.
Honestly, I never write anything on youtube, but I actually have to reply to this. I have never been able to understand why I love Daniel Johnston's music untill now. You are an intelligent person.
@goodvibesallround Yeah, you said it...some people call him crazy but you can just tell through his music and artwork in general that he really is an amazing person. I'm honestly so thankful to have found out about him. I find him really inspiring. He makes me want to create and to just be myself.
@goodvibesallround lol you really know nothing about him do you? The only thing he wanted to be from the beginning was famous...being famous was the single motivating factor for him and always has been.
I agree with you, however, if you watch his documentary, he says multiple times that all he wanted to do was to be famous; he wanted to buy his parents a house.
He was mentioning both Beatles albums: "The Second Album" and "Magical Mystery Tour". Not that MMT was their second album. Wise up.

The medication might benefit him in some ways too I guess... hard to tell b/c he was definitely suffering in his unmedicated days but he was simultaneously very creative and motivated.
slackmaster2000 1 year ago
He must have Tardive Dyskinesia , a condition results from long term use of the medication he takess to treat his mental illness. It is sad because he is also a graphic artist & it clearly impairs his ability to draw well as you see in this video.. It's a shame but if you ever see the movie you can see why he is on the meds... he is a fascinating person

ilemonga 1 year ago
@ilemonga no he doesnt. he has bipolar disorder and ive read interviews about how he started shaking like that when he was recording fun after he got out of the mental hospital. i think its really from the medication and stuff.
davlon0 1 year ago
@ilemonga just bipolar and i think he shakes from the medication he takes. he said something about he was shaking really bad when he was recording fun after he got out of the mental hospital. oh and i just read that he had a seizure once. maybe that has something to do with it.
davlon0 1 year ago
@davlon0 yeah, certain psychiatric medications cause a condition called tardive dyskinesia, where you develop muscle tremors, tics, and shakes. so it's probably his meds.

@MaxwellsAttourney
Think you can do it?
garethac81 1 year ago
@MaxwellsAttourney
Until you do that, your argument is baseless conjecture, nothing more.
garethac81 1 year ago
@MaxwellsAttourney
Organised religions infiltrate the minds of the masses via centuries of aggressive indoctrination, spread by hundreds of thousands of priests, missionaries, mullahs and so on.
Are some musical artists marketed as aggressively? Sure, if you're talking about Britney Spears...but the suggestion that someone as low key as Daniel Johnston is pervasive enough to inspire delusional support for his music on a mass scale is outrageous indeed.
garethac81 1 year ago
Poor Daniel, I love that bastard.
ApolloWaits 1 year ago
@MaxwellsAttourney
Visit any selection of Daniel Johnston clips on YouTube, and you will find many people commenting on how deeply touched they are by Daniel's music.
Are all of Daniel's fans recognising a profundity in his music that is not there? How do you account for that? Bizarre coincidence? Mass delusion?
garethac81 1 year ago
@MaxwellsAttourney
Can you show me a music fan who's been moved to tears by Fred Durst?
garethac81 1 year ago
@MaxwellsAttourney There is a reason that Dylan is an internationally loved and revered Icon, superstar, singer songwriter, voice of a generation and Buckethead is Buckethead.
Technical ability itself does not have much depth or emotional appeal.
tbgx1 1 year ago
@MaxwellsAttourney You'd probably say the same about Dylan.
tbgx1 1 year ago
anyone criticizing Daniel Johnston needs to start his life all over again and this time KEEP his brain and heart and whole body open to improvement! I feel for everyone that is INCAPABLE of seeing the poetry in daniel's work. What a person to be missing out on, what a shame.

"Frankly, if you honestly think this guy writes better music than you, music isn't your thing."
Go away, try to write a melody and a lyric as profoundly beautiful as "Some Things Last A Long Time"...THEN come back and say that.
garethac81 1 year ago
@MaxwellsAttourney
THAT is what makes Daniel special.

hootieman92 1 year ago
@jamesandjackproducts Poor guy, what is the cause of the shaking? =(
hootieman92 1 year ago
@hootieman92 he has to take meds for his bipolar disorder, i'm assuming lithium, which can cause shaking
Thiora 1 year ago
@Thiora Poor guy =( He really puts a lot of heart into his music.
hootieman92 1 year ago
@jamesandjackproducts Anti psychotics are some of the most toxic substances you can put into your body and the side effects range from lethal heart block and seizures to permanent ticks and movement disorders that persist even after the meds have been discontinued. I'm not too familiar with Johnston's medical history so I'm not certain that the shaking is a side effect of meds or some other issue
ritter89 1 year ago 2

his shaking hands could be a result of a life of medication. these symptoms kept him from playing on his own album with Atlantic Records...not sure if it's permanent...read about it in a book on his music and art.
