@marceljano its based on a real story. Trough the animation movies differs a bit from the real story. Read I SAW IT. The main character Gen is based ont he artist who drew the manga. But yes he witnessed his family dying, he helped his mother and the baby afterwards with his older brother ( absent from the anime ) his mother tried to save his younger brother her husband and her dauther who were stuck under the house. The dauther died right after the bless. Gen did survive by being behind a wall

I've heard quite a few stories about that kind of stuff happening in wars and such. the art style is realy interesting, the character designs are quite evocative of the styles from the 70's, though the way they are animated is definately much more of an 80's style of animation.
