Try Bing, doesn't cost a thing. I find it's different, but at least as good as the current Google version. Both have strengths and weaknesses. Currently, Bing does a better job finding resources that will help you answer questions, solve problems. Google is more focused on social search, sending you to sites where there's a lot going on, or large retailers.
Yes, that's how autocomplete works. But don't assume that "free downloads" is a legitimate search. Of the millions of trade published books in print, I'd be surprised if one percent of them are available as legitimate free downloads. Many kids (and people) who download pirated eBooks really believe they are legit because they are so easy to find, it just seems mind-boggling that they are all copyright infringements. But they are, just like most free music and movies.
I think their auto complete function works on a basis of most popular or common searches, it's what people type in that gets put there as an auto complete, not google's own manually typed suffixes. and for auto completes like free download, there's plenty of legitimate things you can download for free, as opposed to the torrents that are usually used for pirating ( But like you said, they took care of that )
When company starts to behave like "too big to fail", that is probably an beggining of an end. Hopefully this is not the case.
