@scumbly Thanks; I re-ran it a few more times, and now can _almost_ hear "dotage," after allowing for Louise to split the syllables in between sobs. That just isn't a word you hear very often in dramatic dialogue - like "unconscionable" and "precipitate" [adjectives], also used in Network - which, at least before the movie became popular, I had never heard in any dialogue, lecture, speech...anywhere.
Around 2:00 Louise says, "...She gets the winter passion and I get [what?]?!" I have watched this scene a few dozen times, and to me, it ever sounds like she says "[the dog ditch]" even though I have seen (on IMDB, I believe) "[dotage]." But try as I might, I just do not hear her saying "dotage." I hear "dog ditch."
You have never seen Taxi Driver, right? De niro was in every scene but one. Holden was the lead in Network. You honestly think Finch deserved it over De niro?! You are the idiot.
He was great. He should have won the suppourting. He died so they gave him the lead. It just isnt me who thinks De niro got robbed. So do you think Rocky deserved the oscar for Best film that year?
so you admit those 6000 members got the best picture wrong, right?!
Man(I'm guessing you're a chick), I aint gonna argue with ya. It was a great year for movies. It is just my opinion. Granted, It is One that a lot of people agree with, but it is just an opinion. You Think I am an idiot for thinking De niro deserved it?! Really?!
@ilovejourney1 For this film, yes. Robert DeNiro, up through Casino at least, was an awesome actor. But there's no shortage of online groupies who think he was robbed at the Oscars--in 1976, in 1980, ad nauseum.
"Network" deserved every statue it got from the Academy, PLUS Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Ned Beatty).
Yeah, I can see it being a divisive scene that way. It's certainly unlike any 'infidelity' scene I've seen before or since. Feel free to share more on what it is about the scene that didn't 'work' for you, I'd be curious.
@scumbly hmmmm, i was just blogging about this at sophomorecritic dot blogspot dot com . feel free to read and enjoy my analysis of all the best supporting actresses i've seen.
@ooks I can understand what you mean. The actors are great, but the dialog and staging are very theatrical and a little phony. Chayevsky is clearly showing off here, rather than exploring the reality of the scene - which should be a respite from the tv world being despised.
@Macleodking Yes! I agree. Thank you. The whole film becomes a little too 'writerly' at times, esp in the case of Holden's character who's supposed to be the only sane one in this world of crazed television lunatics
@ooks I dont' agree. This scene is the symbol of the old world colliding with the new. Max's wife is an old-fashioned wife. He is off to fuck some new, younger and different thinking woman. The scene is quite appropriate. It comes together when he explains Diana and her "Bugs Bunny" life education. Not at all a misstep. It is something that involves everyone. It is the mark of disgusting and pointless progress.
@wasteland70 I agree with your points, but that doesn't change the fact that the dialogue here comes off as extremely stilted compared to the quick-witted, rhythmic brilliance of the rest of the film. But each to his/her own! :)
Fantastic acting. Incredible screenplay. Drama of this caliber just doesn't get produced anymore. Paddy was the greatest. And these two actors were superb.
She's alright, but I can't pick this over Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver.

@Worldizzabiz I've always heard "dotage" – it may just be that her voice breaks in the middle of the word and makes it sound like two

Beatrice Straight is amazing :D

Aside from a bit of bad looping, this was a terrific scene for both actors. Very raw and gritty and real, the way Lumet liked it.

I'm doing this scene for my acting class and picked it PRECISELY because the level of dramatic confrontation is so damned right on.

I dont know, Jodie Foster was pretty good in Taxi driver. Without a doubt De niro deserved it for best lead. Finch wasnt even the lead.

Are you an idiot or just retarded? Everyone who won for this DESERVED it, and Finch is lead.

Uh, yeah, I've seen it you DUMBASS American. I've seen every Oscar nominee in history, for your information.
And I'm the idiot? How about the 6,000 members of the Academy who voted for Finch, you FUCKING IDIOT.

ilovejourney1 2 years ago
Uh, no. He died about a month after he was nominated. Now, Heath Ledger won the Oscar because he died.
And no, Taxi Driver or Network should have won Picture.
