hey dave, i added a few things to this trap, insted of useing one peace of string on the spring i used several to create more power, i however had to create larger notches to acomidate the string. for the killing device i traded up to a sharpened deer antler that i use for an awl as well as flint knapping. hope this is helpful, thanks for all the vids
String loaded kill point has enough strike force to pierce thick fur animals? I'm a novice but I'd have to question that. Possibly add a barb to kill tip to hook prey in place also? Many thanks.

Very nice trap. Going to have to try this one. U r the best Dave. And thanks to the fellow who showed it to you. That's part of the main purpose of pathfinder. Passing on tribal knowledge.
I spend a lot of time researching different bushcraft skills and your videos are great for learning from. You take your time and fully explain each aspect. Thank you.
Awesome trap Dave, I have been playing with this trap. What I have come to find is by pulling the swing stick around to between the pressure sticks, make your trigger stick a dogbone trigger. Attach the string onto the part that has the steak on it. cut off extra string. When the animal steps on the trigger or touches the trigger with its head to eat the bait, the arm swings 270+ degrees striking the animal. This method would be for larger game. but would kill if a head shot is made.
Very nice trap Dave !! If you want more power you can enlarge the whole trap i guess and maybe fork the killing stick!! Maybe you could kill a small piggie with it !?? What do you think ??Good luck tou you!!
Thanks, cool trap but I don't think it would have enough force to actually kill the animal. Nice watch too I got the same one but I think the should re- engineer the temperature device.
Hey dave, does your camera has a swiveling lcd screen? I think that'll help a lot when you're recording tutorial videos where you need to be in front of the camera so you'll know the crucial part of the tutorial is clear and on-screen, just a suggestion:)
It seems a trap that small would only be good for birds or very small mammals, and a trap more suitible for larger animals would also be dangerous to me when i'm setting it up! But it's a great trap though.
Just curious if you would get better or worse results by setting the trigger stick under the short end of the killing device rather than at the sharp end of the killing device?? Not even sure if this trap would work that way but would there be a benefit to the killing device having more rotation power or would the delay of the rotation allow the animal to possibly quickly move away?? Hope I'm explaining this right. great vid as usual brother.
hello Dave. how about avoiding the two piece and a string killing device by making it out of natural branching? sure the search for the right piece of wood would be less hassle.
Hey Dave, this is a really great trap! I spent some time and created one, and it works great. However, I did one modification/improvement that make the trap far more deadly. For the killing device on the trap I used a 1/4 piece of hardwood dowel with a hunting arrow broadehad on the end. This is something you could carry in your pack, or you could even sacrifice and actual arrow in a self reliance situation. Just a thought, thanks again, cheers.

Hey Dave i've been a subscriber since close to the beginning and its great to see you haven't lost touch with your roots. But in keeping with the common man theme i was wondering if you could could point me towards a bushcraft axe that's $40 or under. Thanks!
@Trustme722 Thats tough 40 bucks is not alot for a good axe, Truper brand Axes are not horrible and they are less than 20, just make sure you have a wood handle you can replace in an emergency
Your camera is providing excellent visuals! I feel like I am sitting right there. One question; bankline is tarred you said, I have never come across is before. It is NOT hootchie or tarp cord, obviously. It's designed use is what please? (Trying to source some locally). It was good to see the axe used as a hammer, it seems an overlooked benefit I think. Good idea about preparation. Thanks!
@wildernessoutfitters Is it nylon or some other material? I've found something similar to bank line but knots are not holding very good unless I melt ends with a match. But I made this trap and it is a pretty fascinating thing. It is actually a killing device. Greetings from Slovenia!
Dave, I just wanna thank you for all the time you've taken to make these videos. It's so awesome that when not filming Dual Survival, you're still hard at work educating and helping people sharpen their outdoor/survival skills.
great video and cool trap but a bit complicated, seems like a dead fall would be easier and more affective, to many variables none the less great idea
The Bow Saw Trap!!! You could use a nail or 2 instead as well!! Excellent idea and video! Would be good to have a few around the camp to kill vermin or get small game.Thank you for all you do. I love Dual Survivor and the videos by all of your graduates of your school, too. They put out hi quality outdoors-men vids!! Kudos and congratulations on all of your well deserved success.
Dawi here, that size kleptsy is more for animals the size of possums and raccoons. I have made a smaller version for squirrels. These were traditionally used in the far north on wolves and even reputedly small bears. The size just needs to be scaled to whatever you are targeting. I use paracord, and I do 3 wraps around the posts, this gives more mass to the spring and exponentially increases the resistance, making it faster and stronger, and faster to set. This is here to make you think! Create!
2: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe you said the the killing device would be able to complete one whole swing before impaling the animal. But in the slow motion portion of the video, it seems that the killing device would only be able to move roughly 90 degrees before coming in contact with the prey. I don't know, maybe i just misunderstood what you said. But nonetheless, great video. Keep up the good work Dave.
I The only problem I see with this trap is the clearance from the ground you need to set it. If its something small like a rat or something i dont think that it will swing low enough to get the animal.... i might try it by winding up the trap then pounding in the pegs a little further so when it it releases it buries itself in the ground a bit and basically impales the animal or at the very least pins it.
very cool trap. I have two questions. What kind of boots are you wearing? And what is the deal with that new hawk? thank you for all you do. nice vid!
My concern would be if the animal was larger his body would not leave enough room for the killing stick to gain enough momentum for penetration. I like the idea of this trap though. Maybe if you made the components of the trap taller and weighted the back side of the killing stick with a stone to help sink the stick in it would be more effective on larger animals like possums or coons. Just a thought.
Have you ever saw this trap work before? It seems like there are a lot of things that could go wrong with it, and it's more difficult to set up than any other trap I've seen. Also, what size game is this intended to kill?
very slick trap id maybe split the kill stick and sharpen the points kinda like you do with a fishing spear id think it would have less chance of missing very slick trap though.love the vids and you and the hippie crack me up good stuff.
I have to say I was really expecting you to point the bait stick 180 degrees from where you did. When you first described the trap, I imagined the head of the animal between the two upright pegs and the killing stick to be released right at its head.
If you do it your way, would you use sticks to funnel the animal into the best killing position? Otherwise it just seemed like you could miss the animal with it so open like that.
DAVE! That may be the coolest thing I have ever seen. The second coolest thing I have ever seen is the new Tat- the Iris brand. Nice ink brother. Where did this Dawi dude learn this trap?
That is not an effective killing trap. I going to go out of the norm and not be the yes man on this post. I am somewhat of a trapping expert and the only thing that trap is going to do is potentially maim the animal. I wouldn't recommend actually using that trap in a survival situation. And I don't think dave would use it either. Now I could see that being used on a much larger scale for man trapping by posting it between two trees above a walkway on some kind of trip line. Just my two cents!
@sigma3survivalschool As I said below brother I think for a Rabbit it would work fine for tougher and larger game you would need to scale the trap and use a broadhead or metal spearpoint to the killing device itself. Thanks for posting brother.
@wildernessoutfitters Well the problem with spear type traps is that they wound the animal. Just like a bow and arrow doesn't immediately drop a deer. I would bet a hundred bucks that 9 out of 10 times the animal would get hit and would not be pegged to the trap. The only tension on the trap to keep it pegged is the tension on the cordage. And most animals flop unbelievably. That is why you can't use modern snares more than once because they thrash wildly! But either way I like the trapping vids
I had to add to this to my favorites ..Thanks for sharing Dave ....I wonder instead of bank line if surgical tubing would work?I always carry some of that in my kit too.I have a few ground hogs invading the garden HMMmmmm ha! ha !
I think this trap is very viable for Rabbits, squirrels are a bit tougher but a Broadhead or Pathfinder Sper Point as a Killing device would work well even for coon I would say.
thanks for sharing. one more idea to add to my repertoire and maybe i'll try to catch that pesky rabbit who's eating all my bean and sunflower plants.

Thanks David. Nice trap. Its an easy one to picture in my head so I can remember it easily. Reminds me of a buck saw.

Nice looking trap. Time consuming as you said, but easy to remember how to make, and fast and easy to reset.
Greatbloke 8 months ago
Thank you for the trap. I have not used one like that before, I will give it a try on my next outing. Always keep your powder dry.

I think this trap is very viable for Rabbits, squirrels are a bit tougher but a Broadhead or Pathfinder Sper Point as a Killing device would work well even for coon I would say.

You could also get your woman to check the traps, clean the animal, and cook you a meal while sitting back at base camp. :D
