This song was not invented by the newfies. It was sang by British sailors from every corner of the Empire at one time, the Newfies have just adopted it in more recent times. Sailors as far away as Australia use to sing it aswell. When a sailor was on his deathbed, his friends would sing this song so that he may slip away in a happy, and jovial mood.
