@BlueAndRed34 I was having the same problem- the clouds were all over and did not make a defined bolt- I lowered my resolution from 300 to 72 and voila suddenly it looked more like the bolt in the example. Cloud density is greatly affected by the resolution of the document.

Ok...
Gradient -> diffuse clouds -> inverse colors -> levels (change levels, as shown) -> hue/saturation (colorize checked on, and chose the color) -> done...
Am i right? did i guess it correct? cause im sorry, i cant speak hebrew...

When I make my lightning, I skip the gradient, I just do clouds and then the other option involving clouds... Forgot what it was called.
I will use this technique from now on though, it worked really well...
