  • wow

  • If you compare Dylan, Waits and Cohen, all great lyracists, none with technically great voices, all of them have a lot of pathos. Dylan and Waits have so much, that nobody can come in and put definitive stamps on their songs. Nobody sings them better than Dylan or Waits, and few care to try. Not true of Cohen. But I'm sure Cohen makes money whenever one more idiot from the contests sings his songs. And some fine artists sing them beautifully. Lang and Buckley defined this one.

  • @brelfan Actually he doesn't: He sold the rights to his songs a few years ago...

  • he can't sing, but that is not important, it matchs perfect to the song :D

  • AL CANTAR ASI DEMUESTRA QUE LO QUE TIENE DE COHEN NO SOLO LO TIENE EN SU APELLIDO, SINO QUE TAMBIEN EN SU ESPIRITU; ES UN VERDADERO COHEN

  • best song ever written!!! greets from germany

  • Enough of the Buckley v Cohen debate. Pretty boring. There will always be better singers than Leonard Cohen. But that doesn't detract from the perfection of his music and lyrics, or the uniqueness of his voice.

  • Jeff Buckley Version its the best

  • I drunk a bottle of vodka and smoke a pack of cigarettes to get my voice even deeper while i´m singing this song for the 13th time

  • The One and only Leonard Cohan and the Best Vesuon of this Somg Ever !

  • Dear Leonard Cohen you are truely gifted with that golden and sensitive voice of yours. Your voice is both powerful and soft at the same time. It´s a gift to you as well as to the world and so I feel gifted listening to your voice.

  • wow! the song's changed so much till now

  • Love this but jeff buckley version is my favorite hands down =D

  • this guy looks like he plays golf.

  • Simply the best!!!!

  • This is Leonard's song. Just the best, no one can sing it better.

  • i wouldnt have found this if it wasnt for my girlfriend!! Love this trackk...!! all credit goes to her.... xD simply a great trackkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

  • so awesome !

  • Un chef-d'oeuvre effectivement, de la même veine que le partisan, du au talent de monsieur Léonard Cohen !

  • love fits Leonard, and like a glove..

  • Cette chanson magnifique est un chef-d’œuvre et elle fait partie

des légendes de la musique et ce n'est pas près de s'arrêter vu

le nombre d'artistes qui la chantent chaque année, merci à

    Léonard Cohen pour cela.

  • sick fuck but capeable

  • @OffizierWary Listen to the Jeff Buckley version!

  • This is a real gospel. But the song is beautiful almost in any style.

  • Am i the only one thinking he sings out of tune at 0:49 ?

  • @Frenchtouch100 yes you are!

  • @greenbluekites06

Because you represent all the community of youtube only with your person ?

  • Wow, that was disappointing. He didn't sing, he growled and talked his way through this beautiful song. Rufus Wainwright's version is so much better. I normally like originals so much more than covers, but not this one.

  • @mqwashere

it was always his style, he was a poet before he sang. not everyones cup of tea but sometimes songs have life and soul before perfection. matter of choice and point of view. dylan would never have won best version of his own songs either.

  • a great song

  • love this song!!!!amazing Leonard !!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Leonard Cohen and i love this song..my soul will be start to live again..

  • go watch lee dewyze cover... you will be amazed

  • He's a great recitor, which gives a lot of force to his singing, too, even though musically you might say he's not a singer.

  • jeff buckley also did a fxxxxxx awesome version of this song

  • Frankly, I don't want to hear anyone else but LC sing his songs. His voice and lyrics are perfectly matched. If there is a heaven, this must be the music that will be heard.

  • @atjr Leonard Cohen vs. Jeff Buckley singing this song?

  • It is my thousand time listening, and I still cant stop logging on and listening again...how sad is that!!?

  • @HomeGrownStudios1 You are soo right, but thats why whe have musicians like jeff barkley, ben harper etc.

  • Most enjoyed his compositions!

  • maybe this is the original version and i really respect it! ..but everybody here have to admit that jeff buckley did the best cover ..he deserves some respect, too ;)

  • Just did a review of beats by dre pls watch and subscribe!

  • ¿Cuál es tu nombre?

  • Why is it about this is a good version or the worst? Every singer has his audience, some prefer Cohen, some Bon Jovi some Timberlake and others. Every singer has his kind of interpretation, that's what make music so rich.

  • I`m sorry, but in my opinion the worst version of hallelujah.

  • @lovelyRosex3 ye, but without this there would be no other version of hallelujah. :)

  • @lovelyRosex3 lol this guy wrote the song :D :D

  • @FeuerFisch wrong! it was bon jovi who wrote the song!

  • @lovelyRosex3 This is the ORIGINAL version!!!

  • @OhFookinELL wrong. Bon Jovis is the original version.

  • @lovelyRosex3 You're fuckin with me right??? :)

  • @lovelyRosex3 Bon jovi my ass, BON JOVI SAID HIMSELF THAT IT WAS LEONARD COHEN,RIGHT BEFORE HE SANG IT and even if he didnt say it, WHY ARE YOU ALIVE IF YOU DONT KNOW THE ORIGINAL VERSION?

  • watch?v=GP00HSSL_Ao

  • The Cover´s are better ;)

  • @HomeGrownStudios1 they may not have ideal of a voice, or not even high voice, BUT! they feel music and understand what has to be done, in order to reach that height where there are no heights at all in art. Beyonce may have better voice than this guy. But this guys understands music. Thats why he is always better than her.

  • i think Bon Jovi sings this better. just my opinion.

  • fuck the thumbnail looked like Roy Hodgson!

  • @rhino49 thanks for posting, even though it's incomplete it's still remarkable and must-see..

  • Why is this used in the sex scene in Watchmen? Someone please tell me.

  • Leonard is CULT.......

  • THis song is so painful. Good, yet the pain that it evokes... so unspeakable. One can only say "Hallelujah" in the wickedest sense.

  • @HomeGrownStudios1 they sure don't possess the prettiest of voices but to me they are the only ones who are able to bring out the true beauty of their words.

  • Please check my cover of this

    Joseph Jabbour hallelujah

  • Praise The Lord :)

  • i really respect this man. but i dont get it. to my ears (and i dont mean to offend anyone) it just sounds like late night drunken karaoke. can some one explain?

  • the orginal song

  • Leonard Cohen in concert in New York City in 1988 with Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla singing backup vocals. Amazing.

  • People are so dumb to play that song always in churches ;D...it´s not a praise of God or that stuff primarly. It just translates the religious feeling of "Hallelujah" to the depth of sexual experiences and depicts and worships sth like the religion of love.

  • This song gives me goosebumps!

  • It's triumphant, no doubt, but only because the singer is coming from such a low and broken place.

  • I think Cohen's words about covers of his songs are the best words. He says, more or less, that his critical faculties are suspended and he's just grateful his words and music have been passed on.

What I think most performers miss is Leonard's own impassioned cynicism. There's something totally unsentimental about this song (I'm pretty sure he alludes to S & M in the second verse), but many performers who cover it are too caught up with the religious-sounding chorus.

  • I feel bad by i like every version but this. Sorry Leonard! Love the lyrics though!

  • it hikes a song between the world..

  • 201 people doesn't believe in God.

  • Perla Batalia the women one the right with the dark hair.......I LOVE HER !!!

  • @assailant85 : isn't this song more about love than faith in god?

  • @CargadosCarajos I guess. It was meant as a joke on the title ;)

  • @CargadosCarajos Indeed, this is a song worthy of the name Cohen. And he has become just that.

It's a celebration and complication of being human and thus a praise of god.

I'm deeply, deeply agnostic but this strings a chord I'd never thought I'd ever have. Right next to the Ode to Joy I'd place it. Human emotion is such a strong force beyond anything Newton could throw at us.

I love that mind that came up with this.

  • -.-

  • Foarte frumos ,o alta interpretare la Hallelujah.,,,,,,,,

  • I'm crying even though I'm an atheist and a man

  • this is real music...

  • Love the Justin/Leonard joke. It's great to hear some of the other verses from this gorgeous song as in this video. Mostly we get only the first few verses. I love k.d.lang most of the cover versions, but, I agree with some folks that NOBODY can sing this song, or his others, like the man himself. Leonard, your poetry makes me cry. Thanks for many decades of aching beauty........

  • Wtf is he doing

  • Love this song, i loveLleonard

  • People need to stop covering this. Some songs should be off limits as far as covers go. Cohen is amazing!

  • HOLY crap!! THIS IS SHIT.... OMG the covers are better then the original

  • Comment removed

  • @TheRebelAgesdrummer Maybe stay listening to Miley Cyrus and Alexandra Burke. Leave real music to the adults. BTW Mileys dad has some cracking tunes for you to listen to.

  • @dascotton sorry , it was my brother , not me ... my brother is an asshole.. i really really love this music , this version , this video , i grew up with these musics.. sorry for my first comment.. it wasn't me. sorry!

  • @TheRebelAgesdrummer no worries m8 - we have all now the tower of song

  • @dascotton Technique-wise he's right, some covers are better. But the original has something ''different'' that makes it stand out between the rest of the covers :)

  • ich sag nur eins#! HELLEJUJAHHH! PEACE AND LOVE

  • @Matsui23M PEACE AND LOVE FÜR DICH !

  • jk i love you lenorade

  • william shatner called. he wants his cadence back

  • @BOKNOWSCOMPUTERS ...your comment is actually very funny. hehehe...Still laughing....by the way, Willaim Shatner and Leonard Cohen are both Jews and each talented in their own way

  • I'm not a musical critic. I'm not a music afficionado. I am not a devotee of music....But this much I know-----this song, these poetic lyrics and that voice is the best I have ever heard... Damn I love it

  • @weepingboy3

    check out

"I'm your man" by leonard cohen...one of the best albums period!

  • My favorite song....I just did a cover it. I put all my heart and soul into it...so it would be awesome if you guys checked it out. please?? :)

  • i like how this song has to do with love but people think its a religious song because of the title.

  • hole

  • The sexual experience as communion with the divine, put into words and given voice.

  • @HomeGrownStudios1 Neil Young too. Wondered the same many times

  • isn't great that God still loves us for turning our backs on Him, sent His son to die, and even left a plan of salvation to follow just to be with us again? On top of that He works blessings through even the most broken of people to demonstrate His glory? :)

  • 3:22 - 4:05 yeah!!! :P

  • wow. that is wank

  • awesome....of course.....talent oozing all over with this song....powerful........

  • @muggsie1 100 % agree

  • I love this song but dont like this version which is a shame since its the original singer and writer of it (think thats correct)

just felt that it wasnt as good as other versions I've heard who made it a much more emotional song

  • i dont udersteand the meaning of the song...

  • Eh

  • People with distinct opinions love this song, it's a great work of art. It goes from the sacred to the profane, I wonder if he wrote it over a long period of time. The last verse for me is the most spiritual one ; not on this version.

  • LOL this is not a religous at all, its about sex. Cohen is Jewish... look at that nose. Nevertheless beautiful song.

  • @SeautonGnothi ????

  • @SeautonGnothi

Do read Samuel II (O.T.) It starts to fall to gether

  • the master at work..totally wonderful

  • the song has touched so many people. cant you all just appreciate that? it doesn't matter who sings it.

  • Thank Cohen for writing it. Thank Buckley for covering it. That's just about right

  • Thank Cohen for writing it. Thank Buckley for covering it. That's just about right

  • simplemente FENOMENAL y gracias por inspirarte y seguir los paso de LORCA

  • ohhhh....why why why did it cut off at the building up of emotion just before the end. Ahhgggh....frustrating emotional sudden stop. And yet, still soo good.

  • @EroticCheesecake retired/bored with life lol

  • great songwriter & poet. He gets better with age, poignantly beautiful song.

  • perfect!

  • @EroticCheesecake if you like dull boring songs then listen to this. Stop wasting my time, everyone knows Jeffs is easily the best. And thats the end of that chapter

  • @EroticCheesecake there is no debate about obesity, we know its wrong, your comparison falls down right there cheers...

  • I like Buckley and rhineheart versions better to be honest this version is to slow:/

  • @biglaxma178

those versions are covers - this is the original

  • Bustin Jieber: "I was sent by God to create music"

Leonard Cohen: "No, I didn't send anyone!"

  • @MasterLeap Muy bueno!!!!, Very ggood joke!!!!!

  • @goliardo813 That's not a joke, just the truth ;)

  • @MasterLeap

    LOL ! That's 'pure' Cohen' !!!

  • @MasterLeap HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! I imagine Cohen's voice to be that of MICHAEL the angel.

  • @MasterLeap schreibst du des überall??? Bei kurt nilsen genauso ^^

  • @MasterLeap Mr Beiber, you were sent by Satan to recreate hell through the bland and banal and for which you will be instantly forgotten!!!! At 73 you will be packing groceries at a supermarket instead of touring the world and selling out every venue, and getting rave reviews for each and every concert. If you retire now, God will reward you with a job on the deli counter!!! :-)

  • @EroticCheesecake SInce when does a good vocal range = whining? In that case Cohen never whines. Your in the minority bud

  • @EroticCheesecake ......its easily one of the best covers in the history of music. Do you understand?

  • @fuckmania07 U do realize that this song is about sex, don't you?

  • @PlayaSinNombre Well, if you read the bible, you would know that there is a lot of it in this song. Not saying that there's no sex in the bible... Plus there are some verses missing in this version.

  • @multical100 Actually, I have read the bible. & most of the verses refered to in this song are the " sexy" ones. David & Bathsheba, & king Solomon, etc. But, I was refering to the mood of the song. The use of the metaphor of religious ecstasy for romantic love. Also the way that the first time one experiences a loss of faith, in a church, or a lover can be life shaking experiences which can alter our lives, sometimes permanently.

  • @PlayaSinNombre Well said.

  • @punksush1 Thank you. What's really impressive, is that I only come on here on the weekends, usually when I'm halfway in the bag;)

  • Isn't Perla Batalia beautiful? I can't pull my eyes away from her! I love her with that big hair. Mmmmmmmmmmmm

  • for some reason i expected to get rick rolled

  • THE SONG IS YOUR LEONARD AND THE BEST VERSION DO NOT EXIST!

THE BEST VERSION IS ONE AND ONLY ONE ...YOUR SONG YOUR HALLELUIAH

    the other are only imitation!!

  • @gedewurd listen to Alexandra Burke, X-factor.

  • ::)

    youtube.com/watch?v=kJn828Lujjg&feature=channel_video_title

  • this song was made for Jeff Buckley.

  • Because no one sings it like k.d. lang! As wonderfully talented as Mr. Choen is, I think he would agree.

  • Why in the world would anyone listen to anyone else sing this astonishing song?

  • ähm he looks like hes drunk xD

  • Hey I Just did a cover of this song and I would really appreciate anyone watching it and letting me know what you think! Thank you so much!

    Anselm

  • If I had heard Leonard Cohen sing this before" I walked this room...well who knows..., I'm just sayin'...

  • why is dustin hoffman singing

  • I sometimes try to listen to other versions of this song by other singers. They are all too smooth or too jazzy but never right. Other singers have a technique but they lack soul. A good singer has to be someone who can convey his sensitivity, depth, personal experience and emotions to others. Leonard Cohen flies well over his songs while others remain at best right into them.

  • Gosh, he looks really jewish.

  • amazing song, deep and very soul hearted he sounds.
