They just don't want to get overthrown, and they know it's a possibility when you have tons of money, firepower and influence to bribe others. In case you didn't know, it is possible to overthrow a government.
You don't need to decrease the demand, just increase the supply. Make the drugs dirt cheap, then the cartels will just have to settle with the billions they've already made.
If Mexico wants to improve as a country and start to get rid of these cartels and gangs they need to focuse on their education in schools first. The youth are the future.

This is more of a serious daily threat to North american life, then anything else. Instead of pledging 1.1 billion dollars to mexico, why not just build up a military force, and with the cooperation of the Colombian Government invade with force to wipe out all the cartels. There is more of a chance of people dying from Drug OD then a terrorist attack. But of course that would never happen, because then the largest Cartel(CIA) would never allow it.
The fact that the drug business is a 14-billion industry still doesn't hint that 'drugs sell themselves' makes me question why they don't legalize in the first place. But now I know why-- it's because they've built a "crime factory" consisting of courts and law enforcement... think of how many DEA agents would get laid off if drugs were legal? Fascination of drugs and crimes sell, and they know this. it's all an act to get you people to watch so that the reporter and this news station gets paid.
