  • The model put on base isolators was composed of two 6-story ones. As a result, in the middle, we obtained a double thick deck which, by adding some weight, may be considered slightly detrimental. On the other hand, the upper portion of the isolated model was previously exposed to a severe shaking and inherited considerable structural degradation. Therefore, we rectified it by adding non-structural fasteners (not columns!).

  • ABC

  • Publish your tool so that others can see it on nees.org

  • interesting how the base isolated system has an increased mass at half the height (or so it seems) and some columns added to the upper stories...that increase their overall stiffness...that should act as a mass damper or so it seems to me?

  • You are right, LonleyDeath1423. This is one of the basic pillars of base isolation.

  • The only reason the first one fell is because the frequency resonated with it's own. The second one didn't because it was higher, therefor the frequency was altered.

  • @LonleyDeath1423 That is one of the reasons for using base isolation. The natural vibration period of the structure is increased, so that it doesn't "resonate" with the earthquake motion. (if you are interested, check out acceleration response spectrum)

  • Hello !

We are french students, who need to do an oral preparation about the seimics buildings. We have saw your video, and we think that it's very interesting. We want to know what are the material you have choose to use to make your project, because we have to make a comp to illustrate our project.

    In wait for an answer.

  • the test was too short if it shook for another minute or two it would have collapsed.

  • could you please capture a video on the actual construction of a building having shake table earthquake protector, just want to see if its actually a roller attached to the foundation or is it something else, thanks

  • But the tall building is isolated

  • did anyone die? lol

  • Good

  • the one on the left isn't earthquake proof, right?

  • that is because of the structural construction system and the law related to: In Concepcion and Santiago most of the building are made with concrete and steel walls as the mainly structures against earthquakes, like boxes: A building like in this video never will be built in Chile.

  • Just watch Chilean construction. 8.5 richter quake in Santiago and most of buildings are stand up.

  • the ground acceleration was brutal, that would be 13 on the richter scale to put it in perspective, the ground moved several metres in a second

  • See, the structure on the right is mounted on a elevated platform(base isolators)

that compensate for the movement of the ground,

hence "base Isolator", whereas, the structure on the left will not stand to the stress of seismic waves....am i right? lol!

I believe that both structures are constructed of the same material and dimentions,..the demonstration is to show that this technology will save lives!

    cool vid!

  • @NiteOwl1224 yeah im totally ignorant in this subject but the base is what saved the taller structure from collapse even when the smaller one fell onto it.

  • how is this working. what is the foundatuon doing to protect the building.

  • My Mechanics lecturer also mentioned that the earthquake will not be a constant frequency, instead being a range of frequencies. And that means that it will not shake at the critical daming frequency for the length of the quake. That is my understanding of it anyway, although we only covered it breifly.

  • But would the quake really last this long? A series of quakes could, but they would all come at different frequencies. I don't know too much about this but I'm planning on doing Earthquake Engineering later on at University.

  • I was in Santa Cruz for the Loma Prieta earthquake, it lasted this long.

  • @Punk7680 Oh yes, earthquakes can last a couple of minutes from beginning to end, not to mention aftershocks.

  • actually they have the same height...but how does this system would be in reality? i mean how this could be built on the fundation? is this stills in development?

  • it must work on two axis. we are watching 1 axis movement on this video. and the system very expensive for realty .. but nice job, really nice

  • goood video

  • funny how the small building collapses on the big building and it still stands..

  • People on the small building when it collapses: weeeee holy shit

  • i recond it wierd

  • so idea of this kind protector is connected with platform foundation? I don't get it.

  • seismic isolation

  • great!

notice how the taller building only gets moving when the smaller one collapses on it!

  • this is the very idea of earthquake protector!

  • hmmmm so that's what pancaking looks like on a building. That took 5 seconds to hit the ground and WTC took 10. Then again WTC was also 100 times higher I guess the math works out. Or does it!

  • use some grey matter if you have any

  • study physics

  • Fail somoe more. It did not take more then 2 seconds not 5.

Educate yourself before running your mouth like that.

  • excellent, plase send me this video

  • hi pop
