  • Bandini only made 2 racing mistakes in F1...-daz in oz

  • Woah! He's toast

  • @DenStoreKlinge Oh, fair enough then. Such a shame to see talent perish so easily...

  • @DenStoreKlinge all within milliseconds?

  • :19

  • did the car actually hit anything or just blow up??

  • I remember an article in Road and Track at the time that decried the helicopters hovering and fanning the flames.

  • The helicopter filming the crash also fanned the flames.

  • damn organizers of the race could have prevented this if they had just used the Armco barriers instead of straw bales. i guess they value that couple thousands more than Bandini's life. RIP

  • I was 17 years old when this event took place and the crash was well filmed by ABC's Wide World of Sports, which I was watching. The fireball was over relatively quickly, but the car was upside down among burning / smpouldering haybails for an eternity. The motor journalists told the story better than I. Poor Banders died in the hospital, not under the car.

  • The Monaco fire people let poor Banders roast for a LONG time, before they got him out... ground level shots showed this, via early Comsat TV...

    J.C.

  • @375GTB There was nothing they could do then. Fires claimed the lives of many and with the intensity of the fueled fire, they couldn't have extinguished it because they wouldn't have been able to get close enough to the car with their handheld sweeper extinguishers......even if they could, the fire suppressant used then wouldn't have stopped the fire in time anyways. Just shit luck.

  • @375GTB This is a simple demonstration of just how Safety Crews were (in Sir Jackie Stewart's words)"..pathetically ill-prepared for Motor Racing especially F1." There were simply no barriers, no run-off areas, just trees, power-poles, haybales or the public. In addition, fire crews were not properly equipped or trained to handle big fires. The death of Roger Williamson in the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix was really " the last straw", but there STILL is to this day much needed to be done.

  • @thevmanvj

You said it. Jackie lost many friends because of prevailing attitudes summed up by the "its already dangerous so why bother" line of reasoning. I mean, hay bales FFS! And the training of marshals (Kyalami 77 another notorious example) was just a cheap-ass pisstake of both the drivers and those fans who volunteered.

As a kid/teen watching F1 through the 70s and into the turbo era, I admit I miss the excitement of the high speeds and challenging circuits but - safety first. Always.

  • @krakenwave If you look back at many of the FIA circuits (not just F1) that HAVE been made incredibly safer, there are portions of circuits that are disused or tracks being abandoned all together. Example,at Lemans the infinate changes there, like the addition of the Porsche Curves (moving the circuit away from Maison Blanche),Chicanes on Mulsanne.and the reprofiling of Mulsanne corner. F1 completely abandoned the Nurburgring all together. Fire fighting equipment and crews are better than ever.

  • @thevmanvj

I remember Niki Lauder's horrible crash+smash but the Nuerburgring got safer. However its exclusion "for safety reasons" now just cannot be justified when Monaco continues. Bernie & pals want to concentrate on lucrative "emerging markets" in Asia and so will, I suspect, use any reason to cut down severely on the European circuits used. Sorry to say but safety isn't the primary consideration for this - for eg see the starting of in 86 and the continued use today of the Hungaroring.

  • Disco inferno!

  • @Zebonka no joke, please

  • I was there and saw everything. Sad souvenir,,,,

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

  • bomba?

  • Poor guy, what a nasty way to go...

  • la verdad q no entiendo no entiendo si iva derecho y sin rivales q fue lo q lo hiso explotar y perder la vida(por culpa de los mecanicos)

  • Did that car just blow up? Looked like it did. Didnt see anything on the track at all. Just the explosion.

  • Just a slightly dodgy camera reel. I think there's about a second of missing footage. He clipped a kerb or a bollard, flipped and ignited.

  • I've read there's no footage of the moment just before the crash so they edited the pictures of a previous lap in. That's why it looks a bit strange. He crashed into the straw "fencing" and bounced back on the track.

  • @Ekaj18

for some reason the video skipped, but he hit the tire wall and the fuel tank bursted.

  • @Ekaj18 It skipped a full lap, look at this video: watch?v=IFeSLBhZYYM and look at 0:14 and 0:31

  • bandini had a nasty crash when he die when he had a nasty crash when he crashed out of the race on lap 83 bandini was 2nd place

  • why you continuous saying stupid things?... I don't continuous with your game.

  • UUUUUUUUUhhhhhhhh!, I´M SCARED, jajaja.

you see, you continuous saying stupid things.

  • thts like R.I.P

  • you are a shit

  • lol

  • you are a shit

  • ammazzate thakrak gay

  • For some reason i dont actually think hitting the haybails did it im for him. It had to have been his motor. my guess a piston shot right through the block. plus if it were to hit a hail bail, nothing would have gone into the water besides him.

  • all i know of this crash is that he clips the inside right of the chicane (of this overview shot) and he is then propelled into the hay bails but from this camera angle it doesn't look like he touches the bails and it looks like his car just explodes then sets the bails alight can anyone help please!! thanks

  • What's happened here is that when we see him exiting the chicane, we're seeing several laps before, then we clip later to the point where his car bursts into flames.

Back then, film wasn't quite as prevelant and you couldn't get as much on a single reel, so the person operating the camera would have likely filmed bits and pieces here and there, probably only turning his camera on when Bandini clipped the chicane and he realised something noteworthy (and ultimately tragic) was going to happen.

  • yes that explains alot because it does look like the film has been cut and it doesn't look like he touches the bails and then suddenly it seems he already has and there has been explosion

    thanks that helped

  • and feet from the water too

  • It is a good thing though that Lorenzo Bandini didn't suffer much if at all...

When he was pulled from the car by officials he was unconcious, and they believe he was knocked unconcious when the car overturned.

  • he must've suffered later in hospital though as his goggles where apparently melted into his face

  • You try to do any massacres around my schools and you'll be spittin up lead you faciast fucker! WHy the hell are we even talking about this on a racing clip?

  • First you don't spell facist with a 'a', secondly may I point you to the comment from 'proundfacistamerican', I feel that Lorenzo Bandini didn't deserve such a comment like that! Maybe my reply was over the top, but Bandini was a motor racing hero, and to have him degraded by a person like that deserved a strong reply. My apologies to anyone who found it offensive.

  • Allright, but don't fuck american kids, cause there parents don't take no shit from nobody.

  • You are an idiot my friend. Why on earth would you call this a fake incident? Do you know who Bandini was imbicile?! A great driver, one of the greatest of his times, maybe google him or something.

  • Why are you posting this on every one of these videos.

  • You're the most retarded fk I've ever seen...

You're almost as bad as TheeYeti on posting jackass comments on videos, except TheeYeti actually makes fun of the deceased drivers.

You're very childish, and if you're 47 like your profile says I'm sorry your mind never aged. For one, Photoshop is for making PHOTOS moron... for two, Lorenzo Bandini as chapeauetbarbe stated, he was one of the best of his times, and you really need to look him up.

  • You're such a fuckwit,....

  • I almost died similar to this when i owned an MG. If you know the dual carb system it has, well it was dripping excess gasoline onto my exhaust manifold, it was 103/104 degrees that summer in los angeles-(riverside area). On an incling i took it in because of the way it was running, right before i got on the freeway. This is no joke, a man died a very painful death. I just hope it was over quickly. R.I.P.-Mr.Bandi.

  • Lorenzo Bandini died three days later, he did burn.

  • doesn't look that bad? o_O are u crazy?

  • fucking idiots

  • cars used kersine methanol mix as fuel. No fire suit in the world can save u then

  • he died from burns. the hay bales caught fire after the gas tank exploded.

  • it doesnt look that bad??? fuckin hell, the car exploded!

  • you have no idea what your on about do you. I would love to see you upside down in a car that is no more than a ball of fire and survive, in any suit. And for your information, in those days, fire suits wernt that good, as you can see by the fact when the pull him out the car HE IS BURNT TO DEATH. there are holes in his suit, he is on fire...i mean come on, learn before you talk, please.

  • gbop63...youre trying to tell us that the driver DIDNT burn?? so after all the investigations into the crash and autopsy reports confirmed that he did infact burn youre gonna try tellin us that u know best? SHUT THE FUCK UP!

  • wtf man. wtf.

  • he didn't survive did he???

  • WTF!

  • OMG!

  • He had just entered an S-turn when his Ferrari's left rear wheel hit the guard rail, sending him into an erratic skid. It impacted a light pole and overturned.[5] The car hit straw bales which lined the harbour side, rupturing the fuel tank, and sparks ignited the fuel as the car rolled over, with Bandini trapped beneath it.

  • i think he clips the wall coming out of the turn

  • wtf happened?! it just exploded!!!????

  • what the hell happened!

  • His wife was pregnant when he died. She suffered miscarriage.Horrible.

  • There's a break in this video. He is first coming out of the Portier corner and just after that the camera stopped. He would have gone through the tunnel and then come out. He was killed in the Nouvelle Chicane and that's where you see the explosion. When the video jumps, you're actually seeing where it cut. Probably 10 seconds were cut out there. It's confusing, I know.

  • I think you're right. The way the video looks makes it look like the car actually got blown up with a bomb.

  • ouch

  • Bloody hell... this is soo sad and horrible... Yeah I too have the impression the lower part of his body was gone, just to bones left... urg... =/

  • Im related to that guy. I think he is like a great grandfather or somthing

  • bullshit...

  • No for real. My last name is Bandini. I just dont remember how im related to him.

  • oh my bad. lol

  • just looked into it and he was my grandpas half brother

  • If there's any justice maybe you'll become one.

What happened to this guy is anything BUT funny.

  • yeah he died some days later...his goggle was melted into his face.

  • he actually died 3 days later in hospital..yikes

  • He blew a tire and hit a blank wall.

  • Man, his legs were burnt to the bone in that one quick image of them pulling his body from the fire (o).(o)

  • It seems to me his car exploded. He didn't look like he was going that fast to have his car skid so far.

  • This was at the Nouvelle chicane, Monaco, in 1967. The ferrari slid into the outside bales, hitting a pole on the harbour barriers, causing the fuel line to rupture, and a huge explosion to happen. Lorenzo Bandini burnt to death.

  • what did he hit?

  • it looks like there is a pole he might have hit
