"Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't, then you are wasting your time on Earth".-Roberto Clemente.......That about sums up what a great person he was!!!
MLB should retire Clemente's #21 in the same way that Robinson's #42 was. Making sure it will never be worn again by any player on any team. Much the same as Jackie Robinson, NO ONE can ever live up to Roberto Clemente as a player or a person
@HughJass370 you are looking for a fight im not willing to give you.. you are just racist .. he was a black hispanic, b lack latino have you heard of it
@puertorricane Yeah im not willing to give it to you either dummy,..im not racist...HE WAS BLACk cant you understand?!?!? is it really hard for you to get that?!?!? Just because he may have had a spanish name and speaks spanish dosen't mean hes "hispanic" or "latino". Latino is merely a hispanized version of the word LATIN someone from Latinum or ITALY. Hispanic is someone from Hispania the Roman Provence of what is now Spain and Portugal. DUH!!!!
Been a Bucs fan for over 50 years (and I live in Chicago!) Bobby Clemente was an amazing talent and I was lucky to have seen him play in his prime and be on two world series winning teams. Did anyone ever look better in a uniform than he did? Especially the classic black uni's from the early 60's........
A great man. For the life of me I can't understand how an award in his name is being dragged into the mud by a company selling cars. Try voting for the Clemente award and you'll see what I mean. The award should have little or nothing to do with helping greedy corporations.
You were a master of the game we call baseball. You earned an honest living & died helping others in need. But guess what? My saying is "Do good while you are here and you shall be rewarded at the end"........Your Friend always & forever.
Love from Panama to all Boricuas, great humble people always looking up for othes, Ricky Martin, ect god bless you all. He conocido muchos Boricuas famosos y es increible lo humilde que son y el carino que te brindan
@rickyp4ever You have your own Hero...The one and only Ruben Blades. Puertoricans keep the most highly respect for that blessed musician, social server and men of knowledge. We also have a lot to learn from him and his people.
Some one who gave the sport all he had, gave the world everything he had, gave everything he did his best effort. Only a few men can reach 3,000 hits, but only one man reached 3,000 hits with the number 21. That man ended his baseball career with 3,000. Died at a young age, trying to help others in need. May god bless you Roberto Clemente.
i have always been proud to have been born on the same day as roberto clemente. wish more athletes would aspire to be a man like he was. human first, ballplayer second.
Thank you for the video. I cried. I wish MLB would consider retiring his number. He was more than a baseball player. He sadly died trying to help bring supplies to Nicaragua. You are my HERO!

I watch this as a 51 year old man and suddenly I'm 10 again. I remember him flying around the bases and that tremendous arm in right-field , and most of all as a "Good Man". Not enough of these anymore.
Roberto Clemente was a great athlete but more importantly, a great human being. He could have been doing something else during the holiday season, but he was working to help others the day he died in the prime of his career. I think his #21 should be retired next to Jackie Robinson's #42.
Amazing man, truly a legend in the game of baseball. To think this man died on new years day trying to help out another country (which he was not from) in a time of need is just amazing.
The video footage of him making the throw from right field at Wrigley will always stay in my mind.
The greatest player I ever saw play the game, an oustanding human being and my hero when I was growing up in Pittsburgh. Thank you for this wonderful video. RIP Roberto.
God only knows what i would give to just watch him bat one time. In my opinion he is the greatest ball player to ever play the game. It's a shame that he left us so soon.

@legomastermarshall Is English your first language? It must not be or you wouldn't be responding the way you did. I complimented Clemente. Learn English if you wish to respond to me next time.
his first 5 seasons clemente led the league in throwing out runners at 3rd and home. After that 5th season reporters started calling him lazy, or "hot dog" because his (assists) dissapeared. Actually, nobody took into account that runners just stopped running on his arm.
i was 7 when he died, i'll never forget that day. thanks to Clemente's inspiration, i played organized baseball for 27 years.
@crazzlejoe You're welcome to disagree. How can you argue w/Joe D, Frank Robinson, Hank, Willie, Babe, Teddy Ballgame, or a small cadre of all time greats of the greats, all of whom had to face big league pitching in their era? I think the Clemente era was the best era of all--no segregation, and it was a pitcher's game back then because of the high strike, the slider, the purpose pitch, no relief pitching specialists, no expansion yet, until 1969, only 1 pennant per league.
@crazziejoe You're welcome to disagree. But I don't look at statistics. I look at 9-3 putouts that would be singles if anyone else was in RF. I look at 14 game WS hitting streaks. I look at situational hitting, with runners in scoring position. I also look at playing in a small market, in pitchers parks, against players like Aaron, Mays, Mantle (at least in the 1960 WS), against the best pitching in an era of pitching. HRs are not the only important stat in baseball.
@wailflower good point. although, dimaggio played in an airport and was able to produce home runs. i didn't say he wasn't a good player, just far from the best. i also left out teddy williams. both williams and dimaggio also had to go to the service for our country.
Gehrig? Hell no. Cobb, hell no. Josh Gibson, of his time but not all time, no? None of them faced the best pitching, the pitching of the 1960's, the pitcher's era. Sliders, high strikes, pitcher's parks, and batting champs batting .305. Clemente batted .300 every full season he played except 1968 (.291), hitting against Marichal, Koufax, Gibson, Seaver, Drysdale, etc. Greatest pitching era ever.
@wailflower the players i mentioned batted against the likes of: bob feller, christy mathewson, warren spahn, lefty gomez, dizzy dean, con newcombe, hoyt wilhelm, robin roberts, carl hubbell, etc. just to name a few. so that argument goes both ways.
Gaylord Perry was with the Giants, when late in a game in the pennant race, Mays was at 2nd, 2 out single to right. Clemente comes up throwing. Mays rounded third, hat flew off....and he stopped on a dime, and went back to 3rd. Perry noted, that anyone who can make one of the greatest baserunners of all time freeze rounding third on a routine single, and not at least try his arm, and the Giants really NEEDED that run, then much respect to him. How many runs does this man save over a season?
i saw clemente hit his 3000th hit in three rivers..............3 for 4 that day with a single and a double then a homer..........i believe we were playing the braves but i would have to check that out.....i was a kid and was in awww of this great baseball player.one of a kind.and a even better human being.
I remember this Hero: Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash, while attempting to get food and medical aid to an earthquake ravished Nicaragua. More than a sports Hero, he was a true humanitarian. Happy 4th ..
I was 1 and a half when he died and hes been one of my idols my entire life. I have a 21 tatooed on my right shoulder. The athletes of today should have to do a research report on this guy before the get into the league to know what it's like to give everything you have, not just on the field but off.
It came after game 7 of the 1971 World Series. Clemente was named the MVP of the Series and he was being interviewed by Bob Prince. But Clemente asked if he could say something to his parents in Spanish in Puerto Rico. He then said that he was asking for his parents blessings and that he loved them very much.
Simply amazin' Bring tears to my eyes.. this was a REAL man. It is sad to see ppl that oppose to his number being retired from baseball. The pride of a small island in the Caribbean.. still has to fight today as he did then... even in death they wont honour him properly... sad sad
when did they change to those cool round hats thats immpossible to find ? the ones dave parker n willie stargell wore...luckily I have one but dont wear it....
@wwfe123 He said "The greatest day of my life. And to my children, I give you my blessings. And that my parents send me their blessings from Puerto Rico."
i was only 10years old at the clemente died . i only saw his 3,000th hit and then he died in dec 1972. but i did see clips of his career as i got older he was no doubt a great ballplayer.
Wonderful. It was a thing of beauty to watch Roberto play at Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium. I can still recall the kick to the gut feeling I had when I learned on KQV radio that our hero was gone.
Clemente was the greatest!!! Just to clear something up, Roberto Clemente was an American Citizen. People born in PR are American Citizens. The main language is Spanish, and that made it hard for him to communicate in English, as it still happens with Puerto Ricans today. Sadly Puerto Ricans earned American Citizenship in 1917, so that they could be drafted to fight in WWI. I believe we earned that right by fighting for this country since WWI. My grandfather was a WWII veteran.
I sale many jerseys, but Roberto Clemente's jersey is One of the few players jersey I will wear. I'm proud to produce the WBC Puerto Rico Jersey with the Number 21 and Clemente on the back. I'll sale it at cost for any one who contacts me thru youtube. I'll put my money where my heart is.
dark skinned puerto rican an alien from another planet in comparison to jacky who was at the vary least an american citizen .for this and many more reasons robertos number 21 should be retired from baseball. his life was a testament to the potential of the human spirit WHERE OBSTICLES ARE SEEN AS NOTHING MORE THAN POINTS OF INTEREST ON THR ROAD MAP OF VICTORY AND SUCSESS. CALL THE OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER OF BASEBALL AT 1.212.931-7800 AND VOICE YOUR SUPORT, THANK YOU.
roberto clemente number should be retired from baseball just like jacke robinsons number was side by side 42 and 21.roberto was just not only a great ballplayer and humanitarian but he was also a fighter for civil rights as his team mates will atest to.he might have faced double the racisum that jacky did because number 1- he was not an american while jacky at least was.2-he was darker than jacky.3-he did not speak the english language well. and 4-he was a minority within a minority he was a
Why would the Dodgers give up on this great ball player?Next too Willie Mays my favorite ball player.I can see him now digging a ball out of the right field corner and throwing a strike to third base.Or hitting a seed into right center rounding second with a hook slide into third a base clearing triple. But above all of this he was a humanitarian, giving his life for some thing bigger than him self.
Hey, I'm producing this amazing film "Baseball's Last Hero: The Roberto Clemente Story" and I need to raise $3,000,000. Do you know anyone who might be interested in investing? I have a dynamite pitch. If you introduce me to them and they do invest, you'll get an associate producer credit and a 4% finder's fee! Think about it... If you find someone who wants to invest $3,000,000, I'll write you a $120,000 check just for making the connection!

Happy Birthday Roberto Clemente, the greatest ballplayer ever!
wailflower 1 year ago
@wailflower are you kidding? he was NOT the best ever! do some research! ever heard of willie mays, gehrig, cobb, josh gibson?
crazziejoe 1 year ago
@crazziejoe You're welcome to disagree. But I don't look at statistics. I look at 9-3 putouts that would be singles if anyone else was in RF. I look at 14 game WS hitting streaks. I look at situational hitting, with runners in scoring position. I also look at playing in a small market, in pitchers parks, against players like Aaron, Mays, Mantle (at least in the 1960 WS), against the best pitching in an era of pitching. HRs are not the only important stat in baseball.
wailflower 1 year ago
@wailflower good point. although, dimaggio played in an airport and was able to produce home runs. i didn't say he wasn't a good player, just far from the best. i also left out teddy williams. both williams and dimaggio also had to go to the service for our country.
crazziejoe 1 year ago
Gehrig? Greatest pitching era ever.
wailflower 1 year ago 2

I LOVE that story ! Mr. Mays certainly had a lot of respect for the greatest OF arm in MLB History!

The pride of a small island in the Caribbean.. still has to fight today as he did then... even in death they wont honour him properly... sad sad

My grandfather was a WWII veteran.

dark skinned puerto rican an alien from another planet in comparison to jacky who was at the vary least an american citizen .for this and many more reasons robertos number 21 should be retired from baseball. his life was a testament to the potential of the human spirit WHERE OBSTICLES ARE SEEN AS NOTHING MORE THAN POINTS OF INTEREST ON THR ROAD MAP OF VICTORY AND SUCSESS. roberto clemente number should be retired from baseball just like jacke robinsons number was side by side 42 and 21.roberto was just not only a great ballplayer and humanitarian but he was also a fighter for civil rights as his team mates will atest to.he might have faced double the racisum that jacky did because number 1- he was not an american while jacky at least was.2-he was darker than jacky.3-he did not speak the english language well. and 4-he was a minority within a minority he was a
