Wow-- she's a really cool and interesting teacher. I've always really dug her playing, but never heard her speak and talk about playing. She brings real insight to the music-- obviously really thinks about it a great deal.
This is the most simple and difficult aspect of learning music. It is meditation. It is not to master, but to let go of the fear of not knowing. How difficult to be a student of such a master, and how simple. Bless you both.

I think the approach is entirely valid -- to make the rests a "living" parts of the phrasing.
