I did everything you did, but when I get to "C:\Tools\Hydra>" and type "hydra", I get the message "hydra is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". Halp?

An easy way to do this is to:

1. Find hydra through the file explorer.

2. Open a command prompt.

3. Then drag the hydra executable into the command prompt.

It will enter the file with the full path for you. Now when you hit enter the program is guaranteed to be found and run.

It's not much harder, and isn't too practical either for most scenarios when you are brute forcing by logging in. So, ok I'll leave it up to you the big adult to do the awfully hard job of making a "brute force" wordlist, and leave the real challenges to the kids I guess or did you want the job of word checker?

@TacticalHelp dsniff is a great tool for doing that. FTP isn't commonly used and when it is it's not commonly sent over a network you would be able to sniff.

You should go to the directory you put Hydra in. I saved it directly on C:\. then in cmd just type C:\Hydra or if it already says C:\blabla\blabla type "cd .." first, that will bring you one directory up.

when you're running with linux, you can actually load password files from named pipes... unfortunately hydra (i've checked the code to prove this) loads the whole password list into memory BEFORE it starts hacking... something that's just bloody stupid. I've been looking through it's disgusting code to try to fix this, but it seems to be a design limitation.

The uppercase flag of -P is for a password file. If you use -p it will use a single password. For example you would run: hydra -l user -p pass localhost mysql

to test 'user' for username and 'pass' for password. Which would defeat the purpose of a brute force. Again to sum up for you: Uppercase flag of -P or -L allows you to point to a list file.

Hrydra was written in pure c. If you want to use programs like these, First learn the language! Greg Perry has a great book that introduces c to the beginner, Try amazon.
