  • What is the purpose of mixed reality? A three Dimensional mouse verses to hand object manipulation.

  • Mad! can't wait to play total war on this.

  • fiducial markers underneath the objects

  • I want the girl who was moving all the objects...

  • Wow this was done in 2006? why don't we have computers or games applying this?

  • Nice tech. Is this done with cam tracking or sensory surface?

  • can someone explain to me what this is its pretty cool

  • This would be great for Warhammer 40,000... lol

  • this is cool

  • to everyone who says this is useless, you've clearly never had to make animatics for motion pictures, and that's just the first use to this technology that popped to my head... being able to control 3d objects, lights and cameras from a miniature stage would save up so much time and staff...

  • the first thing it made me think of was the D.I.D. input devices for jurassic park before tippetts crew switched from clay figures... if they had something like this for CGI claymation would sort of be relevant again, probably easier to animate than by mouse at least, and in real time

  • Pah, its just fiducials.

Although some of the ways you can change stuff by rotation is pretty cool.

  • hold on a sec!

    I just got it!

we're in the computer...they're out..or so they think

the virtual duck thinks it real and there are virtual humans on the other side controlling it

  • the graphics on the table with those crappy looking hands SUCKED....lol cool vid

  • Maybe in the future babies will use this to learn about the virtual world. It will be like computer training. This way they will understand and grasp the concepts of computers at very young ages.....ie 4 or younger. They could learn to ask for food by clicking certain things to say words or something representing the concept of eating.

I can see a baby picking this up quicker then sign language. This would give babies an upper hand.

  • Maybe they could be Computer trained even before potty trained.....

  • @TheMixedKid25 So then like a whole generation of machine dependence dictated by the engineering plot of corperate rule then....Ecology of economy real world is a simulation

  • this is useless. All it does is take away the conventional keyboard and give you a bunch of childrens toys to use as an interface. It is intresting. But not useful in the slightest.

  • it's a proof of concept you tool. replace baby items with folders, documents pictures your mobile device anything. some people...

  • that concept is like backtracking. What would be useful about having your mobile device and other gadgets that are on a table displayed in a virtual world. It does nothing but look cool.....barely that. My comment doesn't apply to just baby toys. even with other useful stuff replacing the toys the fact still stands.....this does nothing. You can use other interfaces and technology to accomplish the same task without the drawbacks of physically having the objects on the table.

  • Microsoft surface or the wii whiteboard would pawn this in a second. Even advancing this concept to where you can access the web and things by manipulating these real world objects does little. It would be like an overpriced mouse. The 3d world only exists because of the software and cameras. In the event that these were used to access software like a normal computer the objects in real world would just become a expensive mouse. I'd rather go with the wii whiteboard. more practical

  • having to move through a virtual world to find folders pictures and documents would be just like searching for them in real life. Its pointless. The 2d interface is fine. this software could only win a modern art contest.....thats about all it is good for.

  • neat stuff, any more infos about who id that ?

  • It looks like the same principles as how a laser mouse works. or like the the ps3 or Nintendo wii. each device is assigned to a 3D object in the interface. its pretty simple when you think about it. the technology isn't new. just the concept

  • but this video was put up in early 2006, it was pretty damn awesome back then wasn't it

  • Still, it is just a high refresh camera, complex C++, and a good table. The camera continuously scans each object for it's coordinates and it assigns an animation to each one of them. When it sees that it has been moved a certain way, it either does a special animation or it just moves. It is quite simple actually, but the code is complex.

  • since i wasn't talking about the complexity, i'll assume you were just commenting, rather than arguing.

anyway, yea i agree with you, but the 'awesome' i was referring to, was that it's always wicked to see new ways to interact with a computer, as, this was rather new back then, yea, the outline of the code is simple, but when it comes to it, there's quite a lot shoved in there

  • I think that's called augmented reality, but I may be wrong.

  • Augmented reality is projecting a 3d image onto a video feed

  • wow thats awesome! only thing i can think of right now is maybe architectural planning? idk im not even outta highschool yet haha, so idk. but it seems as if there should be some use for it, or it would be such a waste :O

  • me too. it's very interesting, but what uses could we really use it for? i couldnt think of anything, really.

  • maybe false flag attacks

  • hey! i've seen the same set on Siggraph06,boston. but without the "plasma screen"! hehe.. cool stuffs.

  • This would be a fantastic tool for animators and film/stage directors. You could map out camera and actor paths by hand. Be loads of fun and probably pretty easy.

  • love it!

  • Wow, it would blow to have network congestion when a doctor is operating on you...

  • I agree with Yggdrasill4

    it's not a new tech...

that kind of surgery is actually being used, well, it's been used for the past couple years...

  • Cool, but why is this useful?

  • Millitary certainly doesn't need models to push around a table for strategic purposes. Medical science already have virtual simulations, a doctor can operate on you from 100 miles away using this massive robot that overlaps your entire body. All this thing is doing is mapping out the positions of objects that have been planted with something so that it can be detected. NOTHING NEW

  • may be nothing new but the processing power on that is very very impressive. and besides, who would invest so much time, energy and money into such a project if it had no useful applications? and why is it that every time somebody does something good some person sitting behind their computer browsing youtube has something negative to say about it? where are people like you when we're looking for computer engineers to design brilliant new technology?

  • Well, I must say you have a point. Why would someone build this unless something useful, or even for just entertainment purposes, will come out of it. It's nothing really new though, just a composition of older technology, but someone out their probably already applied it to something usefull I just dont know of yet. Their is no limit to imagination.

  • Why is this technology strikingly similar to the ones ALREADY used in CGI effects? The same thing used in tracking body or even facial movements to make a CGI character appear more realistic. Why would architexture benefit from this if they can already map out their models and apply computer simulated physics? Video games k... That might work a little, but stuff like that is already on the way of production, like the new eyetoy for the PS3 or the Nintendo revolution's remote controller.

  • O_O

  • That's the neat one!

For some of you who might not know, this interface develop from Ishii & Ulmer's (Tangible Bits) Tangible User Interface date back in 1997.

    What is it for?

It's another possibility to develop the better interface for digital product... since the current GUI seems to stuck in the same place for years.

  • Clever, but it seems like it could have been done better. I can't really say because I don't know what technology it uses.

  • woah thast sick

  • kool

  • alright. i see a lot of you guys really cant imagine much of it. first of all, it was just a show off made as simple as it can be. its not the only demo they had there. there are more complicated demos runing on this thing like a car show, a golfgame or somethin. heres a link to more fun stuff you can do with it: www.kommerz.at

  • thats the sh**!

  • woa that hurts my head

  • .... eso es lo q hace un puto raton XDDDD menuda realidad virtual anda que estan apañados

  • its indeed interesting

  • holy crap i NEED THAT!!!

  • dat thingy is cool....where were u guys

  • sweeet

  • It's useless, unless if u got sumthin for ur own show which i highly doubt. There is no point in getting it at all because what are you going to do with such technology.

  • Wow you guys are GREAT at leaving comments... That is so cool, thank's for sharing it, i saw a similar thing with a bath tub and you like tip the water and stuff, that was on a ps3.

  • what the fuck i want it, where is that

  • WHO was the girl....moving all that stuff? Her arms and hands looked nicee...got any face shots?

  • @ShortyBeezUhThug Finally a comment from an alike thinker, lol.

  • wow, it looks like the same emotion generator as the ps2 and ps3. none the less thats awesome.

  • So what?

  • I'm gonna buy mines today on E-Bay!

  • go to my website isthisyou.i8.com now

  • I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT ITI WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT ITI WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT ITI WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT ITI WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT ITI WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT

  • I think it was sarcasm...

  • Wow, that was cool. I liked the duck.

  • He looked 3d, cuz he is 3d, everyone is 3d!

  • thats cool

  • Oh Mate..Those cubes are SOOOO CRAZY! And even the guy moving them looked TOTALLY 3D! Amazing! You Got The Corner!

  • that thing is cool

    >.<

  • Daaang I wouldn't mind having one of those, hahah.

  • lol completely useless but still cool

  • cool stuff!

  • you should some people in there, like the sims, and have them fight and stuff. Make sets like in fightclub, and get them all figthing or whatever.

  • omg thats amzing i want 1!!!!!!!!!

  • it's cool

  • imagine how this could benefit you if you were doing your house out, can see where furniture looks best, its cool!!!!

  • Brutal

  • cool

  • amazing, i'm very jealous.

  • Man, that's fun for like 14 seconds. What's with the random bobsled video? haha

  • cool...very cool

  • That's nice. It's easy though - each object has a different magnetic energy pulse rate and the magnet below it senses it.

  • I'm with msrabbit69. Sounds like some 15 yr old kid taking credit for something thats not theirs.

If I were to show this video I wouldn't ever give you credit.

  • I think they just thought it was cool and posted a video of it.

  • That is crazy...I can't wait to see what kind of things go mainstream with that

  • That's pretty sweet. It would've been neat to see if you can stack the items.

  • coooooooooooooo1.

  • it's great technology, but what's the point of the video? If it's just to show it off, I think that's the idea behind the display (duh*) This really looks like the person behind the camera is trying to take credit for this new filming technology. It's great, and I can't wait to see what kind of creativity it will spark in real cinamatographers, but there's no point to what was displayed here.

  • omg thats awesome, can u imagine playing a war game on that and using that interface to control your army? damn....

  • how the hell can i do that?!

  • pretty cool

  • i agree with the guy that said that it isnt pointless theres so many things that can evolve from this

  • AWESOME!!! can you play porn on that? I'm sure some perv down the road will make it possible and make bazillions out of it. CAN'T WAIT!!!

  • thats cooooool!

    Check THIS OUT!!!

    watch our video! | | | | | V

  • Architecture/Mechanical-ngineering: You could create three dimensional models of structures and explore them with this thing. Military: 3D battle maps, could be installed in APC's used as mobile field headquarters. it could be used in videogaming, or as a more effective mouse for PC's by dropping maximizing/minimizing/moving multiple windows at once. etc. Don't say its pointless. It will find its uses.

  • It doesn't appear because it doesn't use a camera, its probably RFID tags or something... anyway whoever said its pointless... I don't know what ur talking about. There are innumerable possibilities of use for this sort of thing.

  • That's pretty cool.

  • I would make a movie using that. Like a feature length film.

  • wow this video is making me feel old...

  • >.> Cool!

  • wow...i still have super nentendo..thats amazing...wow

  • Wow. The little cam-corder was cute. :-p Thats really nifty. I would like make a whole little words on there and have fun with that...YEAH

  • who says neato anymorejkzz ;) was cool.

  • neato

  • How come your hand doesn't appear as a 3D image? It would be awesome seeing ones self as a 3D image more than it is with blocks or a rubber duck.

  • This seems like it would be a great app for a breakthrough concept in immersion gaming! Not to mention the military applications are through the roof! (C4I, C&C, Order of Battle, etc.).

  • I'm sure this is great technology and not really meant to be marketed. But the concept of this "game" is weird. You move things around a flat surface just to see it duplicated on 3d animation. I just hope this will lead to better concepts. This one is booorrriinggg. Just my humble opinion. =P

  • WOW coooooooooool

  • thats pretty nutz

  • i'd like to try that

  • Wow.

  • wow awsome

  • Wow that's pretty cool!

  • i touch myself to this video....mhhhh

  • @CptKillYou The girl is sexy huh?

  • how thw hell? thats pretty cool tho.

  • thats cool, what kind of technology is that used for?? thats awesome

  • That's awesome!

  • Yeah pretty cool but I could guess how it works quite easily.

  • Wow thats amazing! Technology keeps getting better and better everyday!

  • Wow, that's a whole lotta pretty, it's a lot more useless, though. High-tech game for very young, or very stupid, children.

  • Thats some technology for you....... useless though

  • awesome man :)

  • thats cool

  • Ist das von der CeBIT?

  • I'd like to see this in a game console...

  • that was kinda retarded but cool! is that some time of game?

  • Interesting...

  • This might get boring fast, but remember, these kinds of things are never invented for the purpose for which they are first used. There are amazing possibilities for this. This might change the way digital animation works! It has gaming potential! 5 out of 5.

  • Now make those shapes look like the lips of a woman.

  • Wow!! Very cool UI!!!

    Piko

    http://www.HawaiianConcertGuide.com

  • I LIKE IT !!!

  • Cool? I guess...

  • I guess for other things besides entertainment purposes it could be useful. Its really kool, but...to just mess around with...gets kinda boring fast.

  • The next level of gaming! combine that with Infra red, or Wireless and you could realy get some neat affects!:>

  • amazing.

  • Hahaha. Go right ahead and spend 20 minutes to come up with some stick-up-the-bum critique about this fun little video, which lasts all of 1 minute. I liked it.

  • that is pretty cool, its a simple concept and creation, yet it definitly has potential to lead to other new inventions that could revolutionize the way we interact with our computer.

  • COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! IT DESRVES 500000000000 STARS!!!! but there wasn't that many so I put one. : (

  • WOw i'd get bored of that in a New York Minute

  • sorry but i am not impressed at all.

so this guy invented, for all intents and purposes, a high tech mouse and mousepad? Each block has the same shit under it that a common computer mouse uses but with some (not-so)fancy cgi models as the cursor instead of a little white arrow?

i would have been intrigued if he picked the objects up and interacted with them rather than just slide them along that high-tech mousepad he has there. retarded

  • ....huh?...are u one of those mad scientists?

  • that is so awwsm

  • sooopoib!

  • Yeah, a mouse just moves a tiny pointer on the display. How useless is that? And, we know that the invention of the mouse had *no* effect on the development and evolution of computers and software. (Yes, I am being sarcastic.)

For those of you who can't see any value in what is being demonstrated, I would say you seriously lack imagination.

  • Hey that's pretty neat! However simple and useless it is! XD

  • amazing. this is a useful invention that will revolutionize the toddler video game industry. bravo. also sarcasm.

  • Wow - some ppl have no imagination. Just because he's using the technology to do something usless doesn't mean the tech itself is useless. It could be used for creating animated films, complex green screen effects in film, maybe simulating difficult surgery so the doc can practice before he actually does it . . .

  • thank u, finally someone who is actually not single-minded on this page

  • Like one of the comments earlier it can be used in construction/design of buildings. It's uses are already being to taught in universities here in the UK, (would imagine the same in the US).

  • Do I sense a hint of sarcasm anywhere? Its hard to tell. I think that thing is pretty neat.

  • Awesome!

  • COOL what are people gonna invent next?? a virtual game system that you ware a helmet and play???

  • Ooooh moving colored blocks oooooh blocks move on screen wow

What practical use could this thing have in video games?

  • hmmm, a virtual reality simulater that lets the user interact in real-time with the environment... hmmm, what possible entertainment application could this serve? How bout' VIRTUAL REALITY DUMBASS!

  • Great. So he took a video of himself playing with someone else's toy.

  • I dont feel like reading all the comments so I dont know if this was brought up but if you are reading mine...What the hell can this be used for?

  • maybe some very overpriced presentation equipment, at best... or maybe john madden can use it. this kinda stuff is really cool to look for the first five minutes, but how is it going to be applied in real life?

  • That is amazing!

  • wow, that was cool!

  • Cool!

  • LOL NI SUGER ÅSNE KUK ALLEHOPA =))

  • man thats fucking awesome

  • sweet!!!

  • cool man. I wonder what would have happened if he had put one on top of the other?
