  • Meraviglioso ,

  • Studio Version > Live Version. The Studio Version has the guitar solo at the end.

  • Kerry's solo just gives me the chills!

  • I was brought here by the Supervillian himself...

  • watching that guy play the xylophone is a trip and a half :D

  • 23 people listen to justin biever.

  • this is the sample Madlib used with MFDOOM on madvilliany, its from the track Strange Ways...dohoooope.

  • I envy every single person in that audience.

  • Worlds best sampling must be Strange Ways by Madvillain. Samples this 1.

  • When Kerry Minnear is on the xylophone, he's probably thinking, "I'll show you the real heart and soul of music!"

  • @ChronoKnuckles3 He's pretty good, but he's no Sooty.

I only discovered this band by reading about them in Stuart Maconie's book Cider With Roadies. Excellent musicians, inventive songs and arrangements. Brilliant stuff.

  • @BackToTheBlues Oh god yeah fuck yeah!you just discovered the greatest band ever.Happy listening.

  • @BackToTheBlues He's probably not the best xylophone player on the planet but he blew me away in the mere dexterity he presented in this performance.

I discovered this band through my Dad. When I listened to this when I was 9 years old, I was thinking to myself, "This is, interesting." I was just 9 years old so I didn't really know how to properly react to it but as I got older, I realized that the music from this band was amazing.

GG is now my all time favorite rock band. What about you?

  • @ChronoKnuckles3 Stuart Maconie recommends In A Glass House, so I started there and worked along both ways. Only got the live album left to get, with the possible exception of Giant For A Day it's all good stuff. My iPod is weighed down with more of their stuff than anyone else, lol. It's impossible to liken them to any other band, it's a unique sound. (PS - If you didn't get my joke about Sooty search for Sooty Original Theme Tune ).

  • @BackToTheBlues I now understand the Sooty joke.

What are your 2 favorite GG albums?

Mine are Three Friends and Octopus.

  • @ChronoKnuckles3 At the moment it's still the first, Gentle Giant - there are some really fat synth tones on there, and great tunes. The Power And The Glory is one I've just got and I'm enjoying that too, but even some of the later stuff like The Missing Piece and Civilian are good, though the songs are simpler they're very individual in style! It's hard to narrow it down though, there's so much good stuff...

  • @BackToTheBlues I also like Gentle Giant because there entire song library has something for everyone to enjoy.

AS of now my new favorite GG album is Acquiring the Taste. While I like all of the songs on Three Friends and Octopus and there's one song on Acquiring the Taste that I dislike, the songs themselves just blow my mind in every imaginable way.

My favorite song on the album has to be The Moon is Down.

  • @vishiquals Not only people, but also things. Money, when overestimated, destroys. That makes me really sad. Well, let's enjoy the good ol' Giant, shall we? Let's immortalize 'em showing 'em to to more and more people, so they will not be forgotten!

    Cheers from Brazil

  • @vishiquals yeah true, I read the history of the band, it's pretty sad, buthe guitar player Gary, organ player kerry, and one of the older drummers actually still play in three friends. But besides that i heard the other band members are out of practice. It's very unfortunate, the comercial world literaly took a huge dump on one of the most creative years in human history. Its sad, but rock can never truelly die. At least we have youtube.

  • @Liton777 Damn right. I'm really happy that they keep playing on Three Friends if it's true!

  • How many instruments did those FIVE guys manage to fit in eight minutes of music?! Possibly the smallest orchestra in the world... I love their music, it's incredible how they managed to reproduce it live

  • I got the DVDs containing these concerts from Kerry (Alucard is the company) last year, anyone who loves the band shoul do as well. Thanks for this beautiful music, Giants!

  • DOOM

  • I've never seen such a... vigorous vibe solo. Lol

  • @vishiquals Yes they do... The Band for one....

  • If i was watching the Belgiun Tv at that time, it would be the greatest this that i have watched on tv in my whole life...

  • what's film? jk

  • Vaya, vaya que si era compleja la musica de Gentle Giant, otro de los grandes grupos del Rock progresivo !!!

  • Is this version of the song on any of their albums?

  • @Herreken Yes, the song is in their first album, Gentle Giant (1970).

  • @monscream I know but it's only 4:23. I was wondering if this longer version with that crazy vibraphone solo was on any of their albums.

  • @Herreken Oh, no I think, I never heard it. I think Minnear had improvised it.

  • @Herreken If you buy the DVD of 'Giant on the Box' it comes with a CD of the whole concert so you'll get this version. Also on their album 'King Alfred's College Live', a recording of their first ever concert, there is a similar take on this song but the sound quality isn't great. That being said that album does have an amazing Gary Green solo on 'Peel Off the Paint' which borrows the riff from 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zeppelin!

  • @Herreken Yes this is on the` Giant in the box` DVD/CD

  • @micharro Thanks!

  • superb... where are my GG albums, I need to break those suckers out asap!

  • madvillain

  • I like this band, but if were up to me, I would have all music unplugged. I wish all my instruments were acoustics. Some of them are. I just prefer all acoustic music. I wish most music today was not plugged in.

  • I saw this band at a concert in 1976 with Yes, Peter Frampton and Gary Wright. It's sad that the days of musical freedom and creativity are gone. Now music seems to be pre- packaged and tailored for mindless top40 play.

  • HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THIS BAND. AND AS A MUSICIAN CAN APPRECIATE THE SKILL OF THESE GUYS.

  • Only Gentle Giant would have an extended xylophone solo. Awesome!

  • Ugh.... So good....!

  • Wonderful music, and exceptional talent.

    J-C Becker, MD

  • An excellent song and good to jam on the guitar. I wouldn't try and follow it verbatim if I were you - just find the chords and improvise on it. I find that picking up (stealing) phrases from Gentle Giant (and King Crimson et al) blows some doors open for my songwriting. Have a go and happy strumming!

  • I love this band and their instrumentation. I only wish I had a band like this...

    amazing...they have influenced me alot

  • TROP BON CETTE TOUE LÀ C CALISSEMENT BON :)))))))))

  • TROP BON CETTE TOUE LÀ C CALISSEMENT BON :)))))))))

  • OMFG... every time I listen to them I understand how much the music of our time sucks... they just knew how to do that back then, I wish I could be there in the 70's

  • I was at 4 shows in the '70 in Italy. They were amazing live! Full of atmosphere and great musical performers. A right and original mix between Yes, Genesis, Robert Fripp's King Crimson and Jazz.

  • Madvillain - Strange Ways. It's funny how great music like that can lead me to great music like this. It's OK to appreciate these two kinds of music, is it?

  • Holy shit! Those vibes...just about frazzled my nervous system!!!

  • Such great vocals & Music!

  • Every time I look up, someone is playing a different instrument! Such talent.

  • that boy on the bass and fiidle and trumpet must eat cheroies ?

  • One of my favorite GG tunes. Looking forward to hanging with these guys in Vancouver in October this year. Should be a hell of a jam!

  • you dont need drugs to enjoy music @ keixoun.

  • 6:08 - 6:42

    Mad. Fucking. Genius.

  • One of my favs of all time.

  • Shalom to the Jewish Shulman brothers

  • back in the 70's there was a small group of us who idolized these guys. we had jackets with gentle giant heads on the back.

35 plus years later, after being in the music business myself.

i have never seen anyone touch these guys, especially live.

just phenomenal, it never sounds dated like so much other stuff.

  • He starts playing bass guitar, leaves it and goes to violin and then goes to trumpet... Does another band have musicians like these?

  • @LThunders Arcade fire switches instruments a lot, but they don't have the soul and genius of gentle giant.

  • @LThunders No!!

  • @LThunders Other Lives

  • @LThunders Frank Zappa? Same sort of art. But Zappa is F.Z. and GG is Gentle...

  • @LThunders EL EFECTO MOJARRITA, PAPÁ

  • @LThunders You should check out Jaga Jazzist. Some of them are very talented multi-instrumentalists, and while their style is very different, their creative, eclectic spirit reminds me a lot of GG.

  • @LThunders Affirmative. Geddy Lee from Rush plays the bass, switches to guitar and plays the keyboard with his feet, while he sings. and then takes a break from that to do some percussion.

  • @LThunders Not since punk. 3 chords, 4/4 and A-Major. What else d'ya need...

  • Amazing video.

  • 22 stupid people.

  • wow great upload

  • Gotta laff.

  • the transition between ray and gary is phenomenal.. like an unseen connection..

  • Damn. So both Kerry and Weathers played the xylophone.

  • I can not believe I just watched! Gentle Giant, dream or reality? Lovely sound!

  • Did anyone else see Ray Shulman pass off the bass guitar to his brother Derek so he could play the violin?

  • It´s my birthday and I wanted Gentle Giant to get together again and tour wolrdwide but, it´s well know they just don´t please fans so, I´m watching this video again, thinking I´m missing something.

  • I had no idea that Derek Shulman was actually a decent bass player, go figure, haha!

  • John Weathers, Kerry Minnear, Ray Shulman & Gary Green are the heart of all that is good in music today, IMHO. Derek Shulman sold his soul to the industry.

  • @spikerooney011 Yet, Derek never really felt satisfied with the quality of the music. He felt the group never quite attained what it had set out to do. Derek was one hell of a musician and probably would be the first one to deny it. I bet if you put a fire to his behind, he could have played the keyboards. People think he was just the singer and don't realize how gifted he was.

  • @spikerooney011 I respect you rights to an opinion, spike- but must disagree. It's well-know that he quit the band to strengthen his ties to his family. He had a wife and 3 small kids who needed a father, and the band was touring all the time.

I really do believe the business side of things was 1. because the biz was what he knew 2. he could come home after work.

Don't you think calling him a "sellout" is just a bit harsh?

  • @Zillacello Yes, it was harsh of me and on reflection (nice pun?) I don't have all the facts - so I was just responding to media speculation at the time. Glad to have your perspective Zillacello friend. I will do my research better in future but for now I'm playing GG almost 24/7 - look how many comments are flowing in just in the last few weeks! I did enjoy the Three Friends reincarnation - so interesting to see them as *ahem* older guys. ;-)

  • @vishiquals phenomenal talent - quite unique in their compositions and abilities. And as you say, to peak at 30 or so years old is indeed amazing. Three Friends reformed a few years ago - check them out on YouTube. Kerry left after a few gigs for personal reasons.

  • @vishiquals fair comment - I just admire their virtuoisity and no doubt you do too or you wouldn't be on this page! All the best, Spike

  • is there an instrument these guys don't excel at? I don't think so! Progtastic stuff.

  • Truly amazing set. Very Majestic.

  • absolutely wonderful - what an incredible band they were

  • When music was music.

  • @DoMManU8 OH YEAH. I saw them along with Michael martin Murphy AND ALVIN LEE!!! Them first, then Michael, Then Alvin Lee to BLOW our heads off. LOL, My head was blown before I got there.

  • epic triangle at 6:56

  • Honestly the xylophone solo was a bit drawn out.. but otherwise I'm in love with this masterpiece. Can't wait to hear more.

  • solo on xylophone is so fucking smashing i have to go change my pants. fucking amazing band

  • listening to GG is great, but watching GG perform is an extraordinary experience, that being said, i think my brain would explode if they did a reunion tour

  • ..musician from hell!.. (look at this diabolic xylophone player ;)..they arent human.. *_*

  • Terrific.. love violin...

  • @4:50 amazing!!!

  • Ask these guys to play a cover of any song and they can do it better, ask any band to play a cover of Gentle Giant and it would just sound like a long fart

  • Very amazing! That string instrument (not the cello) is a viola, or violin?

  • great band

  • Bandas competentes como Gentle Giant são raras mesmo em sua época. Competência, bom senso e criatividade são elementos que tornam qualquer

    criação eterna.

  • Mitici!

  • Damn, I think I just watched this like 7 times in a row without even realizing it! Hypnotizing. And to think I discovered bands like Audience, Van Der Graaf, Caravan, Nektar and such years ago and I never gave these guys a listen! Thanks for posting.

  • They are great!! One of the Prog bands ever. Highly underrated and lesser know as some of the others

  • so sad how it seems we've lost this type of music nowadays...

I think the closest band I can think of is Neal Morse era Spock's Beard and maybe Beardfish. And even those bands are pretty obscure...

  • Gentle Giant is very special band to me and i've never seen a band that reaches such high ground of excellence.

  • Wonderful music! Dynamic, excellent musicians and nice instrumentation. It´s a pity that I hear it for the first time in 2011, when I have listened to this kind of music since 1977... Well, I probably missed a lot!!!

  • beautifull

  • genius,genius,genius genius,genius,genius!

  • Madvillain-Strange ways

  • @condones3 Im glad someone got that. Thats what actually got me finding out about Gentle Giant.

  • Those acoustic chords along with the violin melodies in the verses are so wonderfully haunting.

  • at 6:10 it looks like it's sped up, but it's just Kerry Minnear being ridiculous.

  • Video is Great,so is the music .Perfect in every way!

  • nice video, some are a little to dark.

  • Love this!!

  • he's a mad metaliphone player

  • sylvester stallone on bass xD

  • .....Pythagoras is listening at 4:32...

  • coolest rock trumpet line ever

  • This is so beautiful..Back in the seventies i had a lot of bands who where and still are my favourits. Gentle Giant--Robin Trower --Leslie West--and Sabbath..Now i am 54 I still play them and see this on the lab-top..Great thank you..

  • memory of great live moments , thank you for posting:¨)

  • the greatest fukin band ever another great one was camel

  • @judynip You are so right. You have great taste in music

  • Incredible band, never have seen a live performance of them, but this clip is a good compense!!!

  • simply great !!! I saw them twice in Italy in the 70's. I feel lucky

  • wonderful musicians whom formed a unique and tight band. saw them in portland ore way back and it was an awesome and fun concert. they did a whole band drum piece that was perfect.

  • @tomosoos The song is called So Sincere, you can find it on youtube : it does seem like it must have been awesome to watch. You're pretty lucky to have seen them, they're one of these bands I'd go back in time to see.

  • @Canaveral305 i just listened to so sincere and that video ended how this one began.

  • we all know that today if you play in a cover band you must use the same sounds of the cds

so a lot of good musicians cannot play the music they love

today business does not love ideas, and the best songs today are good because they use some old ideas

i hope some day music will be creative again

  • thumbs up if you watched this clip sober as fuck and still can enjoy every second of it! (Y)

  • @keixoun I think I got high by watching this clip...

  • Such binary comments here. So very "us or them". It is possible to enjoy pop, techno, and prog simultaneously, you know. Complexity doesn't make music good, nor does it make music bad. There is awesome and complex music, like prog, but there is also awesome and simple music, and everything in between.

  • @bugbread i agree

you can do a masterpiece with two chords (J.L. hooker did so, satie used few notes)

but now people think that a difficult piece is boring

i think that prog was very good music

in italy in that era there were some manichean talebans who said that music can be "impegnata" or "commerciale": engaged or business

so stevie wonder was not loved

but is so stupid now that people don't know that a there are more ideas here that in techno noise...

  • @bugbread exactly. but you don't see the bigger picture. i don't think it's about the genre or style. without that binary kind of people this band couldn't relish it's cult status. imagine this band was uber-popular... anyhow... GG were contented and you can see that by the way they play. people and their trash are the last things you should worry about. everyone wants to change history. thank god for media! (that's not mass media)

  • @bugbread i disagree. the composer of complex music understands how to convey more beautiful and vivid feelings through song. pop music generally is very bland and the songs are for the most part entirely the same in terms of chord structure and song structure.

  • @bugbread i totally agree!!

  • I didn't know Sylvester Stallone had a long hair and played the trumpet...

  • @keixoun well he did...

  • Filled with Mystery and Imagination.! Did you notice the moods they can manipulate in you, then guide you through a virtual landscape of sound?

  • weed makes you appreciate pleroma.

  • @grimm1onee i don't know how i managed to find this but i did. he ripped the shit up out of this! DOOM!

  • That vibraphone solo is the most insanely brilliant performance I've seen in music.

    GG are utterly amazing.

  • 1:56 to 2:18 and 2:56 to 3:18 DOOM killed it wit that shit nigga.. that niggas a genius..

  • anyway today even punk is forgotten; young people love techno and pop music; if you want sex drugs and rock and roll you need no revolution, nor rebel people; but if you want to play well you need to study a lot and to have some good idea

    i love prog music!

  • im 22 and i listen to real music and i wish the rest f my generation would aswell

  • @joeyhage You're not alone, we're just not that many... How tired I am of people critisicing this kind of music because it's "weird" and not easy to sing along with while they're bouncing around on some crappy local danceclub listening to some techno remix of some lady gaga "song" that supposedly has a deep meaning so that they can feel that the mindless noice actually means something. "Music of rebellion makes you wanna rage, but it's made up by millionaires nearly twice your age" - S. Wilson

  • GG with quarter of a million hits..............I will die with a smile on my face!

  • genius

  • Epic win is this, si?

  • Just in this song, we can found more achievement than in the complete discography from a lot of recent bands.

  • Gentle Giant should be studied in every music literature class in college.

  • My comment: Times are changing, people are changing....I remember a slogan "live young, die young". Sixties and Seventies passed very fast and during the eighties most of the artists followed other ways to make their living...I don't blame them and I don't compare them with "those" who used to be....sorry, this is life....(Yannis from Greece)

  • I was fortunate to grow up in the 70's... better drugs and fucking music. Thanks for the flashback my friend.

  • This really is fantastic

  • Only 8 minutes and only 1 vibes player? This is not true prog!

  • @777jones gentle giant is prog at its best...

  • Comment removed

  • welcome to pseuds corner.

  • Makes you glad you're a human.

  • You have a valid point mulletkid. It's just that i was really into the Prog Rock thing, but I do recall an interview with The Ramones in which Joey stated something about rebelling against the establishment and making music on their terms. Ditto for The Clash. Hmm I'll have to dig up my younger brother's London Calling, Sandinista and The Ramones LP's. Granted, they did have some catchy anthems and there has to be a common denominator between Gentle Giant and Punk.

  • @alcatras4 Ah, and yes there is, Derek Shulman became head of Polydor 's A&R on 1982.

  • @1tonykirk I can't believe he is my band's manager now! Pinch me.
