Bono is fucking awesome. No matter what your politics are - I don't care. I hate EVERYONES politics. If opinions are assholes then politics are what comes out of them..
How exactly did my re-posting of Bono's comment turn into a political, pro-capitalist, pro-American discussion? Oh yes...courtesy of k33304's off-tangent remarks that completely misses Bono's point. Last note: Wealth can inspire ppl 2 improve their lot thru hard work and B successful but it can also foster greed, divisions and arrogant pride. Having less can teach us to B humble & appreciate what we've got but can also lead to being stuck in "thinking small". Two sides to every coin.
If he was properly taught, he would realize there is a major diffference between a Catholic parish and any other community. Jesus is actually really present in the Blessed Sacrament. In a protestant service the most you can get is a temporary emotional charge.
"In America, you look up at the house on the hill--the mansion on the hill--and say, 'One day, that could be me'. In Ireland, they look up at the mansion on the hill and go, 'One day, I'm gonna get that bastard!" LOL!! Best line!!
Do you have a habit of reducing every tidbit of information into a narrow-minded "Right vs. Left" political discussion? Sounds like you're just as guilty of prejudicial classification of people as the "leftists" are. I'm not interested in your tiresome, polarized "debates" that Americans seem to thrive on these days. As for the Irish...they probably DO say the same thing about Bono and he's fully aware of it (and can appreciate its ironic humour).
Americans not into classism? Oh please. Discrimination on the basis of race and income level exists in America. You'd have 2B wear blinders not to realize that. Any country can proclaim high ideals but the test comes in its practice of them.
I welcome open, respectful debates and discussions. Problem is when ppl enter debates with entrenched conclusions that they refuse to critique objectively. Reducing the "other side" to pejorative labels reflects that latter position.
@jademm , Americans realize that rich people provide jobs. We elected a minority black man for president. Europe cant say that for any of their countries. We have also elected black men in individual states, too. Again, Europe cant say that.
How many years since America's inception did it take for a BLACK man to become President? Why did it take so long for such a "tolerant and free" nation? BTW, Europe is still waiting for the U.S. to elect their first FEMALE President. Ha! No rah rah USA chant now, eh?
"Rich people provide jobs"- srsly? Sorry...the present state of U.S. economy and the globalization trend proves otherwise. There will be jobs when prosperity extends to all (or most) than just relegated to the hands of few.
P.S. - Bono wasn't making a statement regarding the class system. He was commenting on the differences in attitude towards SUCCESS between the Irish and Americans. Stop imposing YOUR views by misquoting HIM.
when i saw the caption "bono on oprah"..i expected something different.

@jademm , Bono's right. Americans are not much into classism as others are. Debates are also healthy in coming to a conclusion.

@jademm , there's been plenty of female governors. Sarah Palin being one of them. Blacks are only 17% of the total population.
