I did my laundry once in college station and they fucked up and put a bar in the laundry mat. They had a contest to drink one of each beer they had, something like 100 different kinds or something. Well i gave it a good try but never let a redneck drink beer in a laundry mat, we may have the money to pay our tab, but come on, who wouldnt load up and just leave with a nice drunk on...love texas
Memories of New B...floating on the Guadalupe. I'm from SE TX and lived in Brazoria Co. and TX music is big down there. LOVE ME SOME REK!!!!! I live in NE TX with my husband. I don't know a whole lot of folks out here that really listen to TX music. They have a radio station playing nothing but TX music but I don't know anyone but my husband and I who listen to it. We even got my MIL listening to it. HOOK 'EM HORNS!!!
@axf48529 Hey im from Brazoria Co. Lake Jackson to be exact and we would go float the river in New B. every year on memorial weekend and labor day!!, when i read your post I was like i bet i know this person, this song deff. reminds me of the same thing floatin down tha guadalupe and also my college years in san marcos!!
I have been listing to him my whole life, me and my dad love him brings back such good memories of me and him and hopefully there are many more to come.
Of all the versions of this song on YouTube this one is my fave! I had this version at one time and I think it is on my computer but it won't work on my MP3 cause of the way it was dl'd
I saw him do this is Steamboat Springs in '89 or '90 not long after Sons Of Hermann was recorded, Friend from Athhens GA sent me a TDK 90 minute cassette (sound as ancient as "an 8 track tape deck and an 8 track tape of Bill Monroe's greatest hits" now. don't it?) that had REK on one side and the Austin Lounge Lizards on the other. I got off my ass and moved to Texas.
Makes me miss Texas. I lived on a cattle ranch/ timber farm in East Texas. I used to hunt, fish, and just explore the woods...I played a lot of REK back in those days.
my god I miss dudley's and northgate (but mostly dudley's). I'd give a million dollars to ride my bike up there and be too drunk or too fucked up on other stuff to get back hom again. Why did they have to make it all pretty? seriously.
For me, one of the key moments in the song & story is at the end..."This old porch is just a long time waiting and forgetting, and remembering the coming back, not crying about the leaving. And, remembering the falling down & the laughter of all those SOB's who said we'd never get........................( back up."). What the he'll happened to those two key words?
Anybody know Lisa Boyett and David Ethridge? REK talks of her Grandfather in this song. David was a friend in the early 90's of mine. He dated her and they had an apt. behind Dudleys. Lyle Lovett and REK had just moved a few years afore then I think. Love the song and miss "Northgate". p.s. Hate what they did with the old parking lot there!
This is so good! This is what music and texas is all about. i've sent his music to friends throughout the country and they absolutely love it. It just shows how stale Nashville is.
@samhugh08 Nashville is very much a "box". And if anyone thinks outside of that box, they'll never make it through nashville and rely on local markets. That was the point of "outlaw" country in the seventies. Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson got tired of the Chet Atkins over produced music. (ex. rose garden) So they produced their own music that harkened back to country roots. Today is the same thing. Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, and etc. It's just music pushed on the masses.
@mindeloman Amen! My husband only listens to classic country (hates most "new" country except Alan Jackson or Texas George, etc) & this is what country is supposed to be, not some jokers in their baseball hat & some distressed jeans & new cowboy boots singing about stuff they don't know anything about :)
@jake16seahawks Lyle's is pretty good too, but the tenor of each is so different! This has a happy feel to it, Lyle's is more of a lament. I love 'em both!
