great video but i have a question my friend has this car and he had someone replace his water pump but i guees they snapped the head of the bolt off that holds the water pump on and now i gotta try to fix it because they guy who snapped it off didnt tell him he did that so the pump is leaking what should i do to fix this issue?
Im half way in on this project, I have a 94 corsica and there is like 0 room. Im almost done scraping the gasket off. Major pain in my ass lol. Not a fun time.
Great job .I just noticed the pump on my 2003 was leaking .Was all bummed until i found this vid. Now I cant wait to swap it out you make it seem so easy.
Thanks so much on the water pump removal. All 5 bolts were removed but I just needed to be more persistent. Finally got it off. Awesome video and I appreciate your quick response. You are terrific!!!!
I have a 1996 pontiac grand prix with a 3100 motor. You make it look easy. I got the pulley hub off and the bolts on the water pump off also. Prying the pump off is difficult because the gasket is really tight. Any recommendations on how to get the pump off??
NICE VID ONE QUICK QUESTION I HAVE THE SAME WATER PUMP OM A 2003 MONTE CARLO AND TOOK IT OFF BUT LOOKS LIKE IT WORKS DO YOU THINK ITS STILL BAD CAUSE IM THINKING ON JUST BUYING A NEW ONE THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDS
Great instructional video. However I am trying to save money by replacing the water pump on a 2001 Saturn L200 2.2 L engine. I suspect it will be more involved. Timing chain...I think needs to be moved out of the way and noted where it was before. Currently cannot find a video for this make/model/yr. If you can help or not it's ok.
@jhhudson1448 I wish i had a video for you but i do not at this time.If you use Water Pump Holding Tool J43651 it will hold the timing chain and sprocket in place which makes the job that much easier.
I am going to take care of this on an Oldsmobile Achieva car Saturday. I am pretty good with cars but it never hurts to do research first and see if the job requires any special tools or anything like that. Thanks for posting!
Rich I am going to get my water pump replaced this weekend on my 96 olds eighty eight. Are there any smaller things I can tell the mechanic to do while he works on the water pump to ensure that the cooling system is A+???
thanks a lot rich i have no knowledge on cars, but you explain this very well and clear. I got this fixed quick and it's all thanks to your video, i wish the thermostat would have been this easy
thank you so much for this video...i was taking all kinds of bolts out around the waterpump housing and the whole time all i needed to do is take off the four pulley bolts...didn't know what i was doing
stupid question: where do i add the coolant? i have 1999 Malibu same engine. there is no radiator cap on that (or i just dont know where it is) it cant be just add to the reservoir canister?! right. do i unscrew the top of that tube that is next to water pump(coming out of base of it) like on fords?
This video kicks ass. Very easy to follow, good lighting, great editing and perfect timeline, not afraid to tackle this anymore, so much for a haynes manual.....
I like this water pump design by far. Its very easy to change the pumps on the 3100 3400 and the 2.8L engines. All are the same. Its located at the best place to get at it. The only downfall on these engines are the stupid intake gaskets leak. Its moderate difficulty if you never done one before. I did a 3400 engine but it was too late. As a followup, my new pump was about $35 ... and like others, it took about 15 minutes to change. Rich saved me over $350 ... lots of beer money! Rich, the check for your cut is in the mail... ha ha! thanks again!
The intake gaskets leak on the 3100 3400 and 3800 engines due to the Dex-cool eating the gaskets. So if your losing coolant. Look at where the intake sits right on the cylinder heads. There is 4 possible spots. It will be right between the Power steering pump and the water pump is one spot. The rest has stuff in the way but you would see it bubble if it does. The fix is to replace the gaskets with something better and use the Good old Green coolant. Remember to flush the cooling system first.

@Bulletproof5698 If the broken bolt is above the surface you can try a vicegripe. If not it has to be drilled so you can use an extractor.

My water pump starting leaking on my gm 3100. Does this mean my water pump is bad or just the gasket. Why did it start leaking?
robbocop2000 8 months ago
@robbocop2000 The shaft seal on the pump is bad and the only way to fix it is to replace the pump.

I think when GM came up with Dex-Cool coolant it was an attempt to address the gasket problems.
richpin06a 2 years ago
The reason they made Dex-cool is because it was supposed to last longer than the green stuff. But it comes like acid and starts eating the gasket inside out. Plus it did not help when the gaskets were made out of composite plastic with rubber. I would have used a soft metal gasket instead. My brother has a 97 oldsmobile cutlass. It has the 3100 engine with 196,000 miles on it. The egr port was plugged which I cleaned out. All it has now is a little piston slap when cold. Nothing major.

Yeah they will nickle and dime you to death at the dealer. I do my own work no matter if the car is brand new or used. The only thing I would take my car to the dealer ship if there was a recall and get the free repairs. Some of the recalls are a joke though. Like the ford taurus coil springs break their fix was to install a spring catcher on the front only. So it does not slash the tire when it does break. To me that is not a fix. They don't cover the rear springs and they break too.
jimmy101112000 2 years ago

The intake gaskets leak on the 3100 3400 and 3800 engines due to the Dex-cool eating the gaskets. So if your losing coolant. Look at where the intake sits right on the cylinder heads. There is 4 possible spots. It will be right between the Power steering pump and the water pump is one spot. The rest has stuff in the way but you would see it bubble if it does.
