wow... I'm watching season 1 now and there is such a huge difference between his character here and at the beginning of the series. I shouldn't be surprised, it's obvious that people change over the years, 15 years to be exact. But still, it's kind of astonishing.

Why did he leave and why is he in a hospital thing?

He left in season 11 to be with his love Kem. he returned a few times in season 12 during some Africa episodes. In season 15 he returns because he needs a kidney. (in season 6 he got stabbed and lost his kidney)... in this episode he collapsed during work... that's why he is in bed waiting for a new kidney.

Lots of the other characters on the show got a proper ending, I especially think in their personal life. But the character Carter still stands pretty open, cause we dont know what happened next to him other than he came back to the emergency room. And even if it kills me that we didnt get to see that he had a family to come home to, I think its kind of symbolic. It kind of shows that ER was the only secure thing in Carters life, and where he truly belonged. He starts there and ends there.

in my eyes noah wyles portrayal of carter has been simply stunning. from nervous med student to full fledged doctor, i felt i shared his highs and lows over the years and that was all down to noah wyle

john carter was the heart and soul of er and when he left the show was never quite the same

when he left the ER the show wasn't the same, something was missing until he comes back in the final season

And for the final season wouldn't be the same without him...
