I agree with the poster that this review of the "sound" is of little relevance given that you've changed the pickups. You can discuss the feel and construction of the bass, but the sound samples are not indicative of the stock Lakland pickups (which are great by the way).
@TheSteelChops Stock pickups were fine. I should have left them in. Thought I wanted more output. Not sure how far in the end I ended up being away from the original bass sound and tone. If I had thought about it more at the time, I should have done the review of the bass with stock pickups first. Then just for kicks done the pickup switch. Hind sight is always 20/20. Of course, really the video was done to entice someone to buy it on Ebay. That worked.
I appreciate the demo of the bass. I'm a jazz bass guy, but I can't disregard the need for a P anymore. I own Fender J's but I'm tired of Fender's actions lately in regards to price hikes, short changing quality, and the LACK OF COLORS! So Lakland is probably going to get my money from now on!
This is a well-constructed review, but I don't really see the point in reviewing a bass with different pickups. The body and finish are un-altered, but it no longer has the original electronics as delivered by Lakland...so the sound-related portions of the review are really meaningless. Pickups and strings make a huge difference in sound.
I have Dimarzio P in my main bass. They are great but don't expect a warm vintage sound from them, even cutting the tone won't fully help. They are ceramic magnets so they are pretty growly, not good for a Duck Dunn tone. Great playing btw.
@Pinstripedtie Yeah, I know. I've been corrected several times for mispronouncing it. That's what I get for listening to a salesguy at GC who I first heard the name from.
@muddbunni No problem... I know GC and most of their custies call it Lack-land.
Most people today have NO real education and cannot see that right in their logo there is a hyphen over the A which means it is pronounced as a HARD A. If I ever want to know how to pronounce a company name in the correct way, I simply call the company. You will instantly know! It IS pronounce LAKE-Land for those of you out there who have no clue.
I havent tried the hollow body Laklands at all. The DJ has a great range though & cuts through even difficult mixes beautifully live. The thing I like about it is it is really responsive, if you dig in it starts to growl. Im a big Lakland fan now.
I have the Skyline Darryl Jones jazz bass - feels just like a 60's vintage Fender...& sounds better. Incredible basses. Aparantly Lakland have discontinued the DJ, such a shame. I also own a Lakland 44-01 which is also great!
@alembicbassguy Yeah, I have tried the DJ model and thought it pretty cool too. I'm impressed with the Lakland basses. I have never picked one up and thought it was cheesy. They have all been really good. I wonder how the "hollowbody" models sound in context with a band. Anyone ever played one with a band? I've heard the clips on the Lakland site but never heard someone playing one outside of that.
I thought your slap playing was pretty decent! I'm no bass player but to my ears it sounded cool. Thanks for the review! I have a sample of the Lakland bass in my virtual instrument library and I wanted to hear what it sounded like in the hands of a real player. Good job!
Cool. Yeah, I have been corrected a couple times about mispronouncing the name. I heard it wrong the first someone said it to me. It is Lake-land and not Lak-land.
love these basses, i got a 44-01 skyline natural, no paint, but the wood grain is much more unique then some it makes some awesome waves, they are all great basses, I played the Duck Dunn at a shop, awesome p bass. The Joe Osborn basses tho have probably the best pick ups, they cut through the mix. alot.
Yeah, I know now. At the time I made the video I had no idea how to pronounce it. Guy at the store pronounced it wrong to me and I never followed up on it to see. Several people have pointed it out to me. So I'm hip to it now. Sorry.
i got mine at Samash amazingly...900$...there was a issue with the wiring, there was 2 grounding wires missing from the circuit, i emailed a tech at Lakland and he helped me clear that right up. The bass is amazing over all,the neck is amazing its very thin and the satin finish makes it very fast and smooth.
I got mine on Ebay and sold it on Ebay. I've seen them brand new at Sam Ash music stores. Seen them at 2 different stores. That's the only place I've seen them.
I think the string thru the body is one of those preference things. In talking with other friend bass players it is about a 50/50 argument. For me I think it connects to the body for the bass more and helps resonate through the body. At least it feels that way to me.
Something that made me really wonder about the string thru the body idea was when I put on a pair of headphones but didn't turn on the amp. I let the cord of the headphones rest against the back of the bass body. I can hear the body resonant loudly thru the phone cord. Wouldn't that be the same for bass strings? It seems so to me. However, Sadowsky is brilliant and in the bass building biz. I'm sure he's done the experimenting to know the true outcome. Cool stuff.
You *do* know that the manufacturer is pronounced LAKE-land, hence the "long-A" bar above the first "a" on the headstock, right? That said, I would trade a kidney for that gorgeous bass. Are you open to such trades?
Got enough kidneys right now but thanks. You are right. I had never heard anyone pronounce the name before. It is LAKE-land and not the short A sound I said in this video. Ah, oops.
Ebay. Craig's list. Places like that. They don't come up that often. If you are a good negotiator, talk someone at Sam Ash or some other music store down. Nothing is written in stone at music stores. Trade-ins help. You'll probably still end up in the $800+ range though.
I've got this one! It plays wonderfully.

LAKLAND has a HARD A as in LAKE-LAND. I called Lakland and they informed me that I am correct and I'd rathert call the bass what it is. G'Day.

Im on my second Skyline Duck Dunn. I love them.
MY latest one came with Laklands pup but i put a Fralin in it. I much prefer the Fralin.
By the way, its pronounced Lake-land

Great review - its a superb bass...very nice. Skyline Laklands are excellent.
I dont honestly believe that string thru body adds anything at all to the sound/sustain at all though!

You are right - it is a personal preference thing really!
I know that Roger Sadowsky does not think that string thru adds anything at all - but I'm sure others would disagree.

Roger really knows his stuff!
I guess its not really important in the scheme of things anyway...if a bass sounds great - then it sounds great!!
I think analysing such matters is a bass players trait lol!
