Gotta love FDNY and New York! People in LA suck...we would never be able to "bucket" anybody without some form of punishment and publicized hazing BS. Good for you New Yorkers! Life is too short to be pussies! I love it!
@earydog depends whether its a night or day program and the requirements of the area your in in Florida you must be at least a first responder which is a few weeks of class, I am an EMT-B which was almost a semester, and Fire Academy which will get you to the basic level of fire fighter which here its fire fighter one ad two course the whole day class is a little over three months night class about five and halve months.
@earydog he is right but the process starts by doing civil service exams, fulfilling the prereqs for the departments you want to get hired for and going through all the interview boards and then the evals then you go through recruit academy and become certified and that process can take as long as it takes some people go through a fire science college program like i did that was a two year coarse and or go through a volunteer/resident firefighter program which helps tremendously to get hired
@earydog Both of these guys are correct, however there are some exceptions. The hiring process usually takes anywhere between 3 months up to a full year or as in the case of FDNY up to 4 years. That all depends on how quickly the dept. processes applicants and fills up recruit classes and where you are placed on the hiring list. Always check to see if there are any ways that you can bypass recruit school. Some smaller departments allow a firefighter who is already certified (continued)
@earydog and has the proper credentials to skip the recruit school and go directly onto a truck. However on the opposite side some larger departments frown upon you if you have any kind of previous experience. Just depends on the dept. Best way to know all this stuff is go talk to some of the guys on the dept your looking at joining. As for the training, if you look at a volunteer course, it can be a couple nights a week for several months. For a recruit school you're looking at 10-20 weeks.
@Ten7d5 haha thats funny because last time i checked 343 firefighters died on 9-11 and what 30 somethin cops...yeah they are real fine heroes arent they? good call
@524tw No I wasn't making a joke, the description written by the uploader calls FD "New York's Finest". NYPD is "New York's Finest" and FDNY are "New York's Bravest"
