Detlef was an amazing player. He's not Dirk or anything,but he was an amazing passer for a 6'11 guy, could hit 3's & big shots, and had a high b-ball IQ. If he'd been given the opportunity to take more than 9 shots a game for his career, who knows?

One game vs. the Bulls in the Finals, he started off the game 4-5 with 12 points, 6 boards, 3 dimes in the 1st quarter. In 41 minutes, he ended up 6-9 with 17 pts, 8 boards, 4 assists in 41 minutes. Seattle had the lead after the 1st quarter.

If he isn't better than Dirk, his isn't far behind. Considering he averaged 20 ppg at seattle with Kemp, Payton, Hawkins and Perkins putting up similar numbers that is harder than hell to do. Imagine if he was the #1 option on a team in his prime.

Detlef was an amazing hybrid at the time but no Dirk. Dirk's the superstar EVERY game. Put Dirk with Payton and Kemp, wow. Dirk gets double or triple coverage. Detlef was a better passer, and a smarter player. Dirk is 7 ft', and from the age 20-29 played like a SG, shoots 90% from the line and near 40% from 3.

Detlef was called Deadwood in Big D.

Agreed that Detlef needed more shots, but who hits tougher shots.  DS never was the focal point of the opposing team's defense.

@coolcut11 The league and the players around him can't take away his ridiculous abilities. There's a reason why many people, including older players like Reggie Miller , regard him so highly. Even if he wouldn't have been an All-Star or All-NBA playing on the Sonics of the 90's, I think he would have been an improvement over a guy like Schrempf. I really hope Dallas gets back and wins it, so this consensus of Dirk as soft will dissipate. Guy is a lot tougher than he gets credit for.

@clarksc1988 That was my opinion. And I'm just confident that Detlef was better than him. Dirk will never be a great, not even a good had he played in the late 80's to the 90's. He'll stay in the bench I think. His style of play, that isolation on him, you can't do that in those times. Remember the handcheck, handcheck was legal, but in his time it's not. Detlef was an all-around guy, wish I could say the same for Dirk.

Bird was a three-time NBA MVP, and he did that in the era when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone among others exist. Dirk won one out of pity--when his Mavericks was kicked out by the #8 spot, that's his similarity with Detlef, but didn't happen to any Bird-team. Dirk is great in this era, but in the two previous? He would have been garbage. :))

Look at the numbers. Nash destroys Allen when it comes to shooting. Ray Allen has always had a few guys also known as shooters and scorers but never gave out 10.9 assists a game in a 7 year span. Think about it... it's far tougher to be the best scorer, shooter, and passer who loves to PASS. Nash could be the only one to shoot 50 percent from the floor, 40 from 3 point land, 90 from the line. Think about it... who is a guy coaches create a D-FNSE plan around? Not Ray Allen.

Both Nash and Dirk were league MVPs but not and will never be a champion. So that makes Ray better than them combined. Shootingwise, Ray is just the NBA's greatest shooter of all time. He'll break Reggie Miller's record tomorrow against LA Lakers. I hope I could say the same for Nash.

Obviously I was kidding about Dirk being better than Bird. Nash creates his own shot while dishing out 11 assists to bums. He's the focal point of every team's defense. He creates confusion with the pick and roll to set up Gortat for a dunk, sometimes opts to create space to shoot 3's. Allen runs around illegal screens, but also has low post players who draw double teams, then kick it out to shooters. Reggie Miller's still better than Allen.

Pistol was called soft, scored 24.2 a game with a heart defect.Dirk has the highest arc, perfect release point, and likes to fade. He'd adjust. Wilt wouldn't be as good as he was now,cause he played against short white guys. Shaq would score 60 ppg, LeBron would be called for traveling every play, and Hakeem would be better than Russell in their era, Mark Price would be better than Cousy.

I liked Detlef Schrempf when he was with the Blazers where he joined other 90's marquee player like Scottie Pippen, and Steve Smith. I believe they could have won the championship for 1999-2000 NBA season. But they lost that controversial Game 7 against the Lakers. Until now I'm still haunted by that defeat for it will not only give Schrempf and Smith's first title, it would have also given Pippen's first ring outside Michael Jordan's shadow.

No they don't. Schrempf was a more versatile player than Nowitzki. He was a great ball handler for his size, excellent passer, good rebounder and shooter. Nowitzki's shooting skills are superb while being taller, a bigger scoring threat and a franchise player in a way Schrempf never was. Schrempf was always a good second or third option in the teams he played. In ways Schrempf was a more complete player but less dominant.

Detlef Schrempf was a great player his whole career. Guy had a mad game. Can shoot, score on the inside, solid passer, good teammate n human being. One of my favorite players to watch.
