Oskar Schmidt was the best German of all-time....okay he was Brazilian but he obvioulsy had a German background.......hmmm why would a German emigrate to Brazil? ......i wonder......
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf? I don't know where he's from, I don't know what country he's about, but watching a guy 6 foot 10 shoot from the outside, it's unbelievable.
Forgot about this guy; he was very good. Hard to believe that Seattle is without a team and Oklahoma City has the Thunnder - went to a few games up there and was always a packed house.
Detlef was an amazing player. He's not Dirk or anything, but he was an amazing passer for a 6'11 guy, could hit 3's & big shots, and had a high b-ball IQ. If he'd been given the opportunity to take more than 9 shots a game for his career, who knows?
One game vs. the Bulls in the Finals, he started off the game 4-5 with 12 points, 6 boards, 3 dimes in the 1st quarter. In 41 minutes, he ended up 6-9 with 17 pts, 8 boards, 4 assists in 41 minutes. Seattle had the lead after the 1st quarter.
Im getting a Detlef Schrempf jersey! I hope Dirk Nowitzki doesnt end up with out a championship like Detlef! These two dont get any help from teamates!
@BIGDANNY77 lol of course they get help from the team and their teammates ... i ' m from germany the home country of this 2 guys that mad it .. come on they play in the NBA if you dont get help you will not make it for more than a year maby 2 but that it .. Detlef was good , but there were many players as good as him and even better so that he never won a championship how cares he's still one of the best germany had to this day ... he is loved in the US and in Germany what more can he ask for?
If he isn't better than Dirk, his isn't far behind. Considering he averaged 20 ppg at seattle with Kemp, Payton, Hawkins and Perkins putting up similar numbers that is harder than hell to do. Imagine if he was the #1 option on a team in his prime.
Detlef was an amazing hybrid at the time but no Dirk. Dirk's the superstar EVERY game. Put Dirk with Payton and Kemp, wow. Dirk gets double or triple coverage. Detlef was a better passer, and a smarter player. Dirk is 7 ft', and from the age 20-29 played like a SG, shoots 90% from the line and near 40% from 3.
Detlef was called Deadwood in Big D.
Agreed that Detlef needed more shots, but who hits tougher shots. DS never was the focal point of the opposing team's defense.
@TexasPsychoK Put Dirk with Payton and Kemp and he will never be "Dirk". He just got famous and dominant because the league today is softer and competition is lighter. I don't think Dirk can even make it to an All-Star or All-NBA Team had he played 10 years earlier.
@coolcut11 The league and the players around him can't take away his ridiculous abilities. There's a reason why many people, including older players like Reggie Miller , regard him so highly. Even if he wouldn't have been an All-Star or All-NBA playing on the Sonics of the 90's, I think he would have been an improvement over a guy like Schrempf. I really hope Dallas gets back and wins it, so this consensus of Dirk as soft will dissipate. Guy is a lot tougher than he gets credit for.
@clarksc1988 That was my opinion. And I'm just confident that Detlef was better than him. Dirk will never be a great, not even a good had he played in the late 80's to the 90's. He'll stay in the bench I think. His style of play, that isolation on him, you can't do that in those times. Remember the handcheck, handcheck was legal, but in his time it's not. Detlef was an all-around guy, wish I could say the same for Dirk.
don't call me out, sucka! I loved Detlef... but he ain't no Dirk. Soft, corrupt, whatever... that's the NBA now. And you don't get this, I'm the guy that thinks Dirk is better than Bird, and a top 25 of all time NBA star. He has no friends like Nash now who can take the blame.
@TexasPsychoK You just think, but he's not and will never be better than Dirk. Bird was a three-time NBA MVP, and he did that in the era when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone among others exist. Dirk won one out of pity--when his Mavericks was kicked out by the #8 spot, that's his similarity with Detlef, but didn't happen to any Bird-team. Dirk is great in this era, but in the two previous? He would have been garbage. :))
LOLz...I meant early on, his athleticism, and everything else. Dirk should have been... I know.. the old rule.. coulda, shoulda, woulda. Dirk's special but people don't get that since Nash, who's his wingman? Dirk might have been constantly abused in other eras, but would the big O or Wilt does the same now? Obviously not. Both would suck(in my and probably your opinion.) Dirk would never be garbage, he's 7 feet and shoots better than Ray Allen. He'd adjust.
@TexasPsychoK His athleticism? Does he have? LOL. Dirk is a great player in this era, I will keep saying that. He is one of the top 10 I guess. Wilt? Yeah, it would be a lot easier for him since it's more of a team play now and he'll get more lobs and uncontested shot through ball rotation. Big O? I don't think so. He can be a good player but not as dominant as what he did in the 70's, that era sucked. Hey, shoots better than Ray Allen? I think you're getting ridiculous.
@TexasPsychoK I did not say Nash. But since you've mentioned him already, he's better than Dirk in terms of shooting. But both are inferior to Ray Allen. Being white? What does it have to do in this conversation? Dirk is white but he's not an american. If that's your point.
Look at the numbers. Nash destroys Allen when it comes to shooting. Ray Allen has always had a few guys also known as shooters and scorers but never gave out 10.9 assists a game in a 7 year span. Think about it... it's far tougher to be the best scorer, shooter, and passer who loves to PASS. Nash could be the only one to shoot 50 percent from the floor, 40 from 3 point land, 90 from the line. Think about it... who is a guy coaches create a D-FNSE plan around? Not Ray Allen.
@TexasPsychoK Now you're getting irrelevant. From Detlef, to Dirk now you're saying Nash and Allen. Don't be fooled by numbers buddy. Allen shoots more than Nash that's why he's "worse" in percentage. Nash only shoots when he's free. Even Varejao and Perkins hit them some time how much more for Nash. And whose the guy coaches create defense on? Yeah it's definitely Ray Allen. He just got an excellent footwork that's why he gets free everytime. Tell your momma to buy you a TV set.
I didn't want to be mean, but in the last ten years, who did coaches worry about? Dirk. Kobe, Nash, etc... not Allen though. Numbers don't lie... Jesus and Ted Bundy both SAID THAT. Oh, and half of Nash's shots are horse worthy, and people mention it quite often.
@TexasPsychoK And Ray Allen is in for his 10th All-Star appearance. Nash only has 8, and he's not in this year. Nash is not better than Ray. Both Nash and Dirk were league MVPs but not and will never be a champion. So that makes Ray better than them combined. Shootingwise, Ray is just the NBA's greatest shooter of all time. He'll break Reggie Miller's record tomorrow against LA Lakers. I hope I could say the same for Nash.
@TexasPsychoK As a Canadian i love Nash but rarely do i see him shoot with a guy in his face.... it's always when there is open space....Ray Allen will always have a worse shooting pct.
Obviously I was kidding about Dirk being better than Bird. Nash creates his own shot while dishing out 11 assists to bums. He's the focal point of every team's defense. He creates confusion with the pick and roll to set up Gortat for a dunk, sometimes opts to create space to shoot 3's. Allen runs around illegal screens, but also has low post players who draw double teams, then kick it out to shooters. Reggie Miller's still better than Allen.
Dirk was more athletic when he was younger, not Kobe athletic. Youtube has clips proving this. Pistol was called soft, scored 24.2 a game with a heart defect.Dirk has the highest arc, perfect release point, and likes to fade. He'd adjust. Wilt wouldn't be as good as he was now, cause he played against short white guys. Shaq would score 60 ppg, LeBron would be called for traveling every play, and Hakeem would be better than Russell in their era, Mark Price would be better than Cousy.
@TexasPsychoK You know what, it's very hard to talk to you. You're very irrelevant. You dragged the conversation from Dirk and Detlef to Ray and Nash. And now you're talking about LeBron, Cousy, Price, Hakeem, Wilt, etc. I just don't get you, I'm sorry but you have to have some wisdom, knowledge is never enough.
@coolcut11 i wouldn't say "garbage"...let's be honest, the kraut can play ball!!!!! but i agree he's no larry bird and wouldn't do what Bird did in the 80's.....but garbage is an overstatement....
@quincee33 Sorry pal but you're incomprehensible. You didn't even name which baller you're talking about. The conversation you've got in has already mentioned a lot of names, from Detlef to Dirk, then Nash to Ray Allen. I just couldn't guess which one you're referring to.
@coolcut11 sorry, i meant dirk...you said he'd be garbage if he played in the 80's.....i don't think he'd be garbage, but he wouldn't be in the same league as Bird.
I liked Detlef Schrempf when he was with the Blazers where he joined other 90's marquee player like Scottie Pippen, and Steve Smith. I believe they could have won the championship for 1999-2000 NBA season. But they lost that controversial Game 7 against the Lakers. Until now I'm still haunted by that defeat for it will not only give Schrempf and Smith's first title, it would have also given Pippen's first ring outside Michael Jordan's shadow.
If using my brain to distinguish between right and wrong (not depending on nationality) makes me suck at defending my country... well, i must be the greatest sucker to ever walk the earth... but i got a queer feeling that job has already been taken...
The first German in the NBA,,, shit of what the people hear give... He made his job good and also he was not so bad,,, he was great for a german like this people hear say...!
@NasNY Detlef Schrempf being compared to Hedo Torkoglu? You're disgracing Detlef's name boy. Schrempf has played alongside and against many great players, some of them even named to the greatest. Hedo? Na, he cannot even make it to the All-Star Game, though I believe he should have make it in 2009. Plus, 80's to 90's were way competitive than the 2000's.
Der Grosse Mann, er ist nur der Beste Spieler auf dem ganzen Europa, stark, schnell, und sehr Intelligent. Leider sind seinen partners nicht so wie gewesen . Translation for Americans : The grat man, he is just the best player in Europa, strong, fast, aund very intelligent, unfortubnably not his teammakers was like him. In Jewish : Lihyot ahmí behám shmí, nefésh-hayá,Europa. Uvejól levajvá nafyehá meodejá, so on . . . well maybe you must learn other idioms not only English . . . but . .
Ok. man, sorry. You really know about it. I dont`like English, i don`t study it, i just learn with songs or in the chocolate packs, jeje, i study German and Hebrew, (Yiddish, exactly). The reason for i wrote it : some people from USA, come to other countries and never speak at least little of that ladguages, at least for respect to the region or country, we always must to speak in English. Why? you can not learn other forms? or some history? well, thank you for comment. AufWiedersehen.
No they don't. Schrempf was a more versatile player than Nowitzki. He was a great ball handler for his size, excellent passer, good rebounder and shooter. Nowitzki's shooting skills are superb while being taller, a bigger scoring threat and a franchise player in a way Schrempf never was. Schrempf was always a good second or third option in the teams he played. In ways Schrempf was a more complete player but less dominant.
Are you on crack??? He was a good player and I loved watching him play when he was on my team, but greatest of all time??? No way. That has to go to MJ. Good player but not even close to being GOAT.
Detlef Schrempf was a great player his whole career. Guy had a mad game. Can shoot, score on the inside, solid passer, good teammate n human being. One of my favorite players to watch. Miss watching him play. N that Dunk on Mutombo at 00:08 is sick. LOL. Got Mutombo good. Yea, he had some ups for his size. Will dunk on u if u dont watch it. One of the best International players EVER.
@VeoShock How fundamentally solid and versatile he was became clear at the end of his career when he lost most of his athletic ability and was still and effective player.
@ethangameren Yeah, he's better than Dirk. Had Dirk played in the 80's to 90's, he would have not win an MVP Trophy. I don't think he can even make it to the All-Star.
Schrempf has more moves and is a better passer. He can put similar numbers like Dirk if he was the lone scorer as well. Thankfully he's best played in his role as support.

Great sportsman ! 3 time All-Star and 2 time NBA sixth man of the year says everything.
I remember, sitting infront of the tv at 2 or 3 o' clock in the morning (German time) watching the finals between the Sonics and Bulls. :)
Sam Perkins, Detlef Schrempf, Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton... :)
Just sad that he never received the respect he deserved as a professional sportsman... for all not in Germany... but ok.
Thanks for the memories !

If using my brain to distinguish between right and wrong (not depending on nationality) makes me suck at defending my country... well, i must be the greatest sucker to ever walk the earth... but i got a queer feeling that job has already been taken...

he's great but not the best... he's the Hedo back in the 90's
NasNY 2 years ago 2

Uvejól levajvá nafyehá meodejá, so on . . . well maybe you must learn other idioms not only English . . . but . .
CasiodorodelaTeja 2 years ago
first of all there is no souch languege as jewish...
there is hebrew and there is yidish...
and what you wrote in the so claimed "jewish" was absolute rubbish...
from what i understood you wrote:
being ?!?!? ?!?!? ?!?!? living-soul, europe ?!?!? ?!?!? ?!?!?.....
so yea... next time you bragg with your languege skills think twice ok?!?!?
and btw you had 6 mistakes in your "english" translation....
jingeshan24 2 years ago 2
Ok. AufWiedersehen.

he was the dirk nowitzki of the 90's they play there game just alike...
elnj4lyfe 2 years ago

What´s the song?
Listen great!!
Detlef Schrempf was a star in germany!
It´s nice to see this Highlightvideo!
videowatcher83 3 years ago
after seeing him in the top 60 all time scorers, or so... he was great, but MVP of the NBA isn't an easy feat. I still think he is now Dirk Nowitzki
ethangameren 3 years ago
Germany forever!!!!!!

If Dirk had Detlef's moves to the hoop, he'd be DOMINATING

the Pacers had solid wingmen in 1987 with Schrempf, Chuck Person and then rookie and 18 yr Pacer star Reggie Miller
creeptalk 3 years ago
Man I remember when he played for the blazers in 2001 (I think it was). Geez what a bench they had then
gleno89 3 years ago
Detlef Schrempf was a great player his whole career. Guy had a mad game. Can shoot, score on the inside, solid passer, good teammate n human being. One of my favorite players to watch. Miss watching him play. N that Dunk on Mutombo at 00:08 is sick. LOL. Got Mutombo good. Yea, he had some ups for his size. Will dunk on u if u dont watch it. One of the best International players EVER.
VeoShock 3 years ago 8
@VeoShock How fundamentally solid and versatile he was became clear at the end of his career when he lost most of his athletic ability and was still and effective player.
omnivorous65 1 year ago
One of the best international players ever. A great player to have on any team. Just a winner n truly a great person as well.

Better than Dirk?, dunno, but i think its closer than their numbers indicate. I enjoyed watching Detlef more than Dirk.

better than dirk?
are you kidding me?
not even close
ethangameren 3 years ago
waaaay better than dirk he had waaaaay more heart then dirk!
BOMPTONPIRU 3 years ago
@ethangameren Yeah, he's better than Dirk. Had Dirk played in the 80's to 90's, he would have not win an MVP Trophy. I don't think he can even make it to the All-Star.
coolcut11 1 year ago
Schrempf has more moves and is a better passer. He can put similar numbers like Dirk if he was the lone scorer as well. Thankfully he's best played in his role as support.
