  • That's fantastic stuff. Great guitar work.

  • Are there anymore of videos of these two playing together? I thought they also did Never Surrender on this show.

  • Incredible. Finally got to meet Bruce after his Montreal gig this past Spring. What a humble super nice human being.

  • Incredible

  • astounding

  • Rik Emmett and Bruce Cockburn....Canada's two greatest guitarists!!! It DOES NOT get better than this!!!!!

  • A man with a heart and he rides and shoots (yes guns) and plays guitar. A free man. A man with a soul.

  • ahh the circles in the stream lp,my favorite instrumental was and still is "cader idris"

  • INSANEEEE Love this man

  • He looks so young here!

  • Yeah, they're sure enjoying themselves, but I still prefer the 'Circles in the Stream' version, it absolutely shimmers with light and life. Amazing that such a ranking guitarist not only is a fine singer but for my money the finest lyricist ever, bar none, and that includes Waits, Mitchell, Dylan, Janis Ian, Roger Waters, Allan Jay Lerner, and a handful of others - I've heard them all so I'm not just throwing away meaningless superlatives. 'Astonishing' is right, Brian l890..

  • Cockburn rocks

  • WOW it has to be said, look at Bruces left hand from 3:10 to 3:26. He is truly one with the guitar.

  • Great tune, I chill back with my jj and melt into the computer chair listening to this.

    love the grass

  • Rik really gets in the way, but then I'm not a fan of the dobro. He does acquit himself, but the song is entirely changed.

  • This takes me back home...Thanks.

  • Amazing beat i love it.

  • bruce in his 'chipmunk' phase...sligthly predates the 'conservative-lesbian' era that saw him into the 90's. Thought rik coulda done his homework a bit more here.

  • Wow! you really analized this....as for homework....have you done any recently?

  • A Phd "in the.....".....wow!.....amazing what passes for education these days

  • Genius! Pure genius! These guys are two of Canada's greatest guitarists. Would have loved to be one of the lucky ones in that session!

  • Folks, True North has a link for all of Bruce's albums . And you can listen in to all the songs you want. That has to be a first, Thanks Bruce !!

  • Bruce Cockburn's guitar is an inspiration. Moreover his lyrical talent is astonishing! God Bless Bruce Cockburn.

  • Canada should be really proud of this prolific songwriting giant.

  • When i first heard this song on the Ripples in the Stream album almost 30 years ago it was a great inspiration to learn how to pick a guitar. Thx for posting this...great memories :)

  • I can't even imagine how great they feel playing this.

I mean, that smile he gets is priceless.

  • Your words are perfect. Thank you

  • Unfortunately, no studio recording of this song. It only appears on his 1977 live recording Circles in the Stream. Bummer.

  • darn..what a bummer :(

    o well,

    thanks :)

  • two masters just having a good time. Nice to see them smiling and enjoying each other's contributions. No one up manship goig on, although Bruce can just about shame anyone. Very few people could do that with Rik. Two great voices too , which is overlooked when you play that well (see david Gilmour)

  • I remember this from a great show on local tv. It was called "In Session".

  • I have so much Cockburn stuff on cass and cd..and I love it all..but this video..I play it almost every morn as I get ready to go out and face the day. For me ..positively uplifting.. Thanks Cat

  • Bruce Cockburn has been a mainstay for a lot of Canadians who like good music. The lyrics speak of social justice and peace. All of his songs reflect that. He is also a libertarian.."I RIDE AND i SHOOT AND i PLAY GUITAR" He is a severely underrated guitarist and my inspiration to learn guitar came from Bruce Cockburn. I may be mistaken but I think Bruce enjoyed shooting IPSC. Or a similar discipline.

  • Saw you at Fish Creek in WI.,youre one of the finest guitarists I've ever known....Love ya!!

  • Serious.

    Wow

  • I wonder if Bruce drew any inspriration from Doc Watson?

  • I dont think so, but everyone should draw insp from Doc

  • Man... two of my favourite players together, and both in peak form! Sweet....!

  • What a fantastic video. Thank you

  • Nice. Hadn't seen this. Thanks for sharing.

  • Bruce, you're always the best! Thanks for your music!!

  • bruce cockburn has been casually making great music under the radar for nearly 40 years. i'll take a bad bruce cockburn album anyday over the best of what the rest try to offer.

  • It always amazes me the sound Bruce gets out of his guitars. He was way ahead of his time and still shines.

  • Very, very nice. That is some monster guitar playing for sure. Can't get over the resemblance between young Bruce and Napoleon Dynamite, ha ha.

  • "What are you gonna' play today, Bruce?"

    "Whatever I feel like, gosh!"

  • I think it was first released on the 1977 Album Circles in the Stream .

  • Has anyone ever hear of a song Bruce did called, "everyone knows the world got the blues by the balls?" If so please post it

  • that tune is on an album called Night Vision...one of my faves! there is a horse running towards a train in the dark on the cover...i'll see if i can find it for you

  • Outstanding

  • I feel like my generation got ripped off! There's no one I know of these days thats doing anything like this.

  • This is ridiculously amazing. Thanks for posting this video. :) Totally brightened my day :P

  • this just makes me /smile

  • Fantastic!

  • wow. to have been sitting there in one of those recliners!!

  • Unbelievable! My favorite BRUCE instrumental LIVE!

  • wow thanks for posting this , this brings many new thoughts to an old skull..

  • You have anymore of this stuff? How about the one where Rik and Bruce are playing Never Surrender?

  • ...I originally seen this on TV back in 81 and seeing this I feel the same way. Two great Canadian guitarists jamming...and having fun

    awesome!

  • This has such an ethereal quality with Emmitt's dobro One of those rare pieces that keeps you coming back to well... and why would'nt you

Long may your music win new converts Bruce

  • I really like the foreshadowing of Bruce's interest in the Dobro at the beginning of this clip given his yet-to-be heavy use of the instrument many years later.

  • Wow, Rik Emmett and Bruce Cockburn jamming together! I have never seen this before. Any idea how old this recording is? Thanks for posting this one.

  • Excellent.

  • WOW!!! THANKS!!

  • What a great jem! I've never seen Rik play a dobro before.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • I am an atheist but I do love Bruce's work and "Circles In The Stream" is one of my favorite live records of all time.

  • How come you do not know God he knows you

  • So do Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.lol

  • This is just an amazing display of great guitar playing by some of Toronto's best! Bruce Cockburn is really one of the greatest guitarists around. I'm very impressed with Rik Emmitt as well. Great video/audio! Thanks.

  • bruce is a living legend

  • what an awesome jam

  • Bruce is so gracious. Just watch him affirm Emmit with his facial expressions. He's a good man, and a heck of a guitar player.

  • varsitycamplife:

I don't dissagree that he's a gracious and amazing person, but I was watching for this and took it differently. I saw him intently listening to Rik as he was playing to his slide, and then when Rik got to the point realization in his music, (what the searching was looking for) 2:52? they both found it and Bruce smiled with Rik.

  • Well, perhaps that's the point where they "clicked" and the feel of the music reached a whole new level; one where playing becomes purely instinctive and you don't even concentrate on the notes anymore - it just happens all by itself.

  • Yes! cool :)

  • yes, that was really great. I would love to see Dancing in the dragon's jaws - my all time favorite!

  • Man, there used to be a great live version of "Wondering Where the Lions Are" on youtube from around the same time period as this video. If you've got it, I'd love you to post it.

  • Thank you. That was just beautiful. I'd never seen or heard that one before. I'm wondering what year was that piece is from.

  • Hey John... Deer Dancing is from Bruce's "Circles in the Stream" CD, which I wanna say was from 1977.

Its only a solo piece when Bruce does it, and its a fair bit more intricate than presented here.

Its one of those "holy grail" songs wherever Bruce fans gather to play...

  • Of course, in Rik's defense.. this is Bruce's song, and not an easy one to play at that, so I think he did rather nicely complimenting it. Still love the version on CD best. It's only on his live Circles in the Stream album, no studio version :( Hey Bruce, next time you do an instrumental album????

  • cool, never thought I would see/hear this one on youtube. thanks for posting.

  • Bruce is absolutely rock solid in this while the other guy seems to be having problems keeping up. No offense to him. Still, v.rare bit of footage. This is what youtube is all about. Nice one!

  • nice :D

  • Fantastic, thank you so much!!

  • Very rare piece of footage of a young Cockburn! Got any more please post it!

  • Wow. Where did you find that?. Please post more if you have it.

  • classic! Thanks for the post.
