Such a useless slaughter that battle was, for both sides. Could've been avoided so easily. Tragic that the battlefield is in such a lacking state of preservation. Still, probably my favorite out there though, the march into town was much longer and a much more desperate situation than Pickett's at Gettysburg!
Fine actor was Richard Jordan...like all those who have gone before him their epitaph should read.. I gave everything & took nothing back except the pleasure I gave to others......god bless & rest in peace for your duty is done the war is over ............
For the record, Randy Edelman did not compose Kathleen Mavourneen. It's an old song from the 1830's. All credit to Edelman though for great music for this movie.
Yet, my Great Grandma didn't think so, she hated the Yankees till her death. One /two of her brothers died in the war and the family farm/plantation was burned, allegedly by Shermans men, early in the War. The Confederate women knew how to hate and they remembered. When World War 1 came around, cousin Henry joined the US Army and had has hide skinned for wearing that Yankee uniforme to her house. The same happened to Harry Truman.
Lovely instrumental version of a great old Irish song. The album "More Songs and Music from Gettysburg" includes the vocal performed by Meir Finkelstein that was used in the movie.
Kathleen Mavoureen, awake from thy slumber, the blue mountains glow in the suns golden light, ah where is the spell that once hung on thy numbers, awake in thy beauty oh star of my night...
I heard this song at a re-enactment that was closed to the public once. It was dead quiet and we were 10 miles from any known civilization so you didnt hear any cars. It was amazing. Then another re-enactor took up the song "Lorena" and i gotta say i cried that night.
The above picture of General Lee and his staff Generals, an orginal, was last scecne in a Casino in Minden, Nevada. I never seen another, with the expection of this one posted.
I love this song, just like I love the movie Gettysburg. The movie is really good. And Win and Lo are some of my favorite characters, next to Chamberlain and Buford. :D
@KNS1996DFS The bond between friends suffered greatly during the war. I can imagine the agony that they both felt, knowing that they were to fight against each other. And it is a historical fact that when General Armistead swore an oath to his dearest friend, Win Hancock, that if he ever raised a hand against him, may God strike him dead... he meant that with all his heart. I imagine that both of them, knowing they were on opposite sides of the battlefield knew Armistead would die.
@c44LuWanda After signing the Armistice, Grant and Longsteet went to play cards. Some of these men were friends for life. and some of the enemies became friends. Joe Johnston at Tecumsah Shermans funeral went bareheaded in bad weather and was advise to put his hat on. He said something to the effect that if the circumstances were reversed that Sherman would not have his hat on. He died about 10 days later of pneumonia.
@progressiverebel : Very true mate. Sherman gave Johnston's captured troops supplies as they were near starvation, he didn't forget that and he and Sherman became great friends visiting each other after the war. Johnston was a real forgotton hero of the war imo, real sad how he died, the man's code of honour and intergirty could never really be questioned imo
@lomax343 haha good observation! Lee was shorter than the rest, I believe.
All of these men were Lee's finest generals. I also noticed that this was painted after(ish) the war because, for example, Lee's, Hood's, Jackson's, Gordan's, and I think Bragg's positions or stance were all from pictures taken of them during the war
@lomax343 haha I think it's a method of photography/painting, where you put the taller ones in the back to make them appear that way. A stupid example of that is in Back to the Future; Doc was like a foot taller than Marty so they always put him well behind him when they could.
@lomax343 And all but one has facial hair of some sort. They need to police their mustaches in accordance with military protocol. Godfather hisself said they look like bums. (Generation Kill reference anyone?)
@lomax343 . Nope the picture make it clear that Lee was just a bit little taller. But its the artist, I know that some of the Generals were shorter. Marmaduke for one. Notice that Bragg is in the back rank with Jubal Early and I can't tell which is Peter Longstreet. I also don't see Sideney Johnston.?
