Its because the animation method changed due to budget and company changes.

From season 2 onward, instead of hand-drawn, they now use Flash animation.

The characters look pretty much the same; the only real difference is that because of the new animation, the motion of things is slightly different. And as you said, the show looks a tad brighter.
