I remember New Years 02-03, something happened that I thought was the end of the world for me. I heard this song when it came out and thought said New Year was a "jet black new year." Then I heard the story behind the song where the vocalist witnessed a kid fall out of a five story window and then get dumped by his girlfriend later that night. I realized soon afterward that my experience wasn't so bad by comparison. At least I can laugh about it now.
