All those years ago the truth was spoken and no one cared, just a silly little song.. Bruce’s words are being proven correct every single day as we are getting worse. When will people ever wake up, never is my answer. As John Lennon once said. “Society is being run by insane people for insane objectives”, peace and love will not end that behavior. Powers in control just laugh at that stuff, heartless, heartless , heartless, is what they really are.
This is an amazing song no matter which version you listen to. It may be even MORE relevent now than when it was written, and probably even more so in the years to come
You're absolutely right. In Ireland, where I come from there is a referendum on the way where if it is passed our budgetary and economic policy will be dictated to us from the European Union bureaucracy in Brussels, and they will have a free hand to impose more austerity and cuts to social services to pay off the gambling debts of European banks. Listening to this song makes me pissed off to vote 'No'. This should be the 'No' campaign's theme song.
I remember making fun of Cockburn when I was a teenager due to his pessimism. I now look at him as a sort of prophet. Normal has continually gotten worse.
I was a student in the 80s and remember buying the vinyl version of this lp when it was released in Canada. So my "original" is the version that was on that record. I actually still have it, and a turntable to boot!
I think there's two versions of this even pre-dating 2002 - the version on "Waiting For A Miracle" sounds subtly different to the album version. Weird. Anyway, great track, and one that seems to get more relevant by the year.
Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for it for years. I thought I'd never hear it again, but I just found my old cassette copy today, too. This version is MUCH better than the remix! The bass in the intro is great, especially the lick just before the vocal starts. I understand wanting to do something different with all the takes you've got lying around, but I wish he'd put it somewhere besides in place of the original.
Thanks for the comment. As far as I know this is the original.Apparently Bruce agrees with you because he remastered the song in 2002. That might be the one you are calling the original. Yes, this one is smoother and I like it that way. I listened to the remastered version, which was choppier and funkier and thought it sounded contrived. I guess it depends on what you hear first and come to love. I also don't care much for the one live version I have heard. Great album though, eh?
@earthpages I agree with earthpages because he is correct. maybe Bruce forgot the original...ha. Find an LP of this album and you will see the light. MUCH more soulful drumming by his long time drummer , DeSalle(?) anyway, why BC decided to replace his drum parts always baffled me, as they were so very, very excellent. I suppose he felt he needed a more edgy pop thing but it was a sad parting of ways for me.
