On the 15th October 2011 will be the 30 year anniversary of Metallica forming. This band comprised of mere men no different then you and me, have graced this land with music in its purist form for 30 glorious years. We owe them the honor of having the worlds most viewed video on Youtube! A title one little idiot doesnt deserve. Up until and also on the 15th October 2011 all metalheads are required to watch Enter Sandman live at Moscow! Post EVERYWHERE
At 3:13 I can't help but think of the scene from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind where they are communicating with the aliens through music notes. It sounds just like it.
Im not sure about gilbert but I know Steve Vai is well versed in jazz.. Alot of guitarists must downplay their ability to catch ears. So what your hearing isnt actually his best by any means
This album is nothing short of genius. A true peer of what would be a modern day Mozart. A tour de force and a real piece de resistance if you will. Like a fine wine this album gets better with age and some days I find myself sipping on this 1990 vintage when the aquifers are just right. The bar was raised my friends. A gauntlet was toss to the ground and ripped asunder by the hand of a god! hahahaha
What I love about Vai's music is that without a single word you can totaly get the feeling and the idea of the song. You can, guided by the title, picture someone in the middle of an erotic dream that doesn't go that well. And the struggle to understand what's going on and to try to wake up, but at the same time no willing to do so.
fuck...hear this madness with a good head-phone, and go crazy man...I´ve always believed that something strange happened sometime in Vai´s mind for he could make this..."there-are-no-words-to-describe-music"...is like a cosmos-speed-travel
I think steve vai is better than hendrix, in my opinion, hendrix is a bit overrated.Hendrix isnt that great, and i dont know why all say hes the best guitarist of all time.I dont have anything agenst hes music or guitar playing skills,im just saying there is much better guitarists, like Stevie ray vaughan and Eddie Van Halen
i hate it when people say that some guitar players dont play with emotion. Its a pretty big insult. Just because you cant play it ( that's the real reason people say shit like that) doesn't mean you have to insult other guitar players
@blackmetal54 well not all of his songs are passionate or emotional, but if you take a look at whispering a prayer, there's a lot of feeling in that for sure!
@blackmetal54 hey man whoever that thinks that steve vai doesn't play with emotion doesn't have any idea of playing or listening to a guitar. vai and many other brutal legends of guitar are genius nobody cant think as fast to play like them, thats because they dont think what riff i'm going to play next?no they just feel it so thats emotion for me. To all that assholes that says what you coment before: buy a guitar, go to a good accademy and play inestead of talking with no idea!! vai rocks!!!!
@blackmetal54 i like my music with emotion but some people like rusty cooley and yngwie malmsteen do not play with emotion. However i still love them as emotion is not everything in guitar for there is inventivness, originality and technique all to take into account aswell
@rummy987 I disagree. As Al di Meola once said "Technique is not only important but most important of all because without great technique, you cant execute what you hear in you head. So whoever says that technique is not apart of emotion in guitar playing, are full of it." I not sure if i thats word for word but i did read it quite awhile ago.
I mean no disrespect of course. Its interesting for people to give me different perspectives.
He does everything live as well as in the studio lick for lick and that is uncommon when you get to a certain skill level like this I guess the people that don't like his music just don't get it and thats kinda sad but for them theyre's always "michael jackson, huey lewis and cyndi lauper".yeh!

I've listened to Hendrix and Vai, and that emotion bit is a little ridiculous in my opinion. Vai excels in his passionate playing, which he places at a much higher priority than playing fast. Just look at his face! And the kind of stuff that comes out when he improves, it's just amazing.
I love the weird ass part that starts around 2:54 with that weird ass little solo that escalades into a beautiful riff... I don't know, it's hard to describe haha
I've been playing guit. now for almost 40yrs. & the best thing I can say is just be yourself, don't try to imitate anyone, there's lot's of people out there who can play "just like-[fill in the blank"] if you do that you'll end up just another hack in a bar band, take a piece here, a piece there, & make it your own, ROCK ON!!
I cannot beleive that such a simple principle is causing such a headache amongst people who regard themselves as guitarists. Good god men, did you not even go to school?
A-B-C-D-E-F-G, if its an 8 string, it's simple - Just add an H. Unless of course you're using a computerised synth, in which case it's Q-W-E-R-T-Y-U, with an added I (optional).
Christ, call yourselves musicians, you couldn't differentiate an octave from an octopus.
last time i checked there is no H and dont say i dont know what im talking about because im classically trained on many instruments and synth is a laguage not notes
Your a dumbass dude from high to low would be (tuned to standard) for a 6 string guitar e B G D A E 7 string guitar e B G D A E B 8 string guitar e B G D A E B F# or a e B G D A E B the musical alphabet goes from A to G#
no it wouoldn't be an added "G" it would be a "G#" i do believe, because the tuning on the low G and B would not be the same as the tuning for the high G and B, but it wouldn't be a low G, unless you were tuning to like, E, double standard or something lol, but ya, makes you wonder what a REAL 12 string, like EADGBEeadgbe would look like haha, probaly have some fucking LONG scales and arpeggios. ok image a 12 string, 36 frett guitar aahahaha
drop d everything? lol drop d refers to the Low e string being dropped to D to match it haha, dropped d everything would be a d note on ever string, going over 3 octaves, or 2, depending on if you tuned up or down to d on some strings. would be heavy as shit tho
Vai is one of those guitarists who surpassed the master and stuck it to the man. Don't get me wrong man I love Satriani, but Vai's music is so beautiful and emotional. Just look at the facial expressions and body language he shows. He ain't a robot that's for sure man. Vai needs to come to Texas. We love him down here!
Nothing against Vai, I actually like his music more than Satch's because he's crazier, but facial expressions and body language are some of the worst indicators of how emotional a piece is. It's about the music, not how much you ham it up while playing it. Vai hams it up a lot, but he has legitimately emotional and interesting melodies so he can pull it off.
Ihave a honest question. and i want and honest answer. wich is harder to play, the guitar or the bass. i think the guitar is but thats just my opinion
my opinion is that you cant compare them like that... its like saying whats harder, Blues or Metal.. depends on the player and where they wanna go with there music...
but bass i probably easier to start out with... but again i dont think you can compare them like that.
sure maybe bass is hard but honestly if you think about it guitar is becouse of all these guitarists who play fast and good theres a standerd that we have to meet before were even considered good and you cant really hear when bass messes up but if guitar messis up every one and there mother knows. we have to play a good solo or the crowd gets dulled. so the bass is physical stress and the guitar is mentle stress so there both even in there own way!
Bass is just as hard as guitar, and even a more physically challenging instrument.
The mental stress is just an imaginary standard most guitarists think they have to live up too, which is kind of dumb on the count of that they just think of the guitar solo instead of what benefits the music they're making.
Dude try shuting up i was trying to peaceful but your probebly a bass player whos probebly a stage hog and is saying base is harder because you play bass. the best string instrument players are guitar players and no bass player can match up too the top 100 guitarists of today so blow me. im srry for posting such a bad thing on one of vai's videos so please forgive me ConcreteTheSecond
I am acctually peaceful, and I'm also a guitarplayer, I don't play much bass at all.
And, there is no doubt that the best string instrument players are gutiar players, BUT, that doesn't mean bass isn't equally difficult. But i do believe there are bassists that can match up to the top 100 guitarists, it just has to be a person that has has taken it to that level, there aren't many of them, but they do exist. And even if there are few of them, it doesn't make the instrument any easier.
(tried a bass, i think it's not a big deal and it's much easier then electric guitar, but because i'm not a bass-guitarist, my opinion worth NOTHING...)
so, set aside the fact that the string dimensions are larger, the frets are wider, and the strings in general are harder to move, and you played as you usually would on guitar, and you still found bass easier?
It's basically the same instrument, just an octave lower, take away and give a few things on the techniques of picking (if you use a pick), the way of holding your hand on the fretboard, general feel of the instrument and such.
Then it isn't about the instrument, but about the player.
Bass and guitar are equally complex instruments, and bass has larger dimensions in strings, fretboard and so on.
It is equal instruments, just that most bass players choose to make it easy. Playing Blink 182 and Jonas Brothers on guitar isn't hard, but that doesn't mean that guitar isn't hard.

I totally agree with you on that there's much better guitarists now.
But back in the day, Hendrix was way, way ahead of his time.
Half of the things he did were so weird that they still have people scratching their heads a little today.
He deserves the acclaim in the sense that he laid alot of the groundwork of what would become rock and metal.

It's about the music, not how much you ham it up while playing it. Vai hams it up a lot, but he has legitimately emotional and interesting melodies so he can pull it off.

HAHAHA! Yeah dude i totally know what you mean. I can't stand it when dudes start like being constiptated on stage whilst playing 3 notes.

Ihave a honest question. and i want and honest answer. wich is harder to play, the guitar or the bass. i think the guitar is but thats just my opinion
FORSoulless 3 years ago
I think, only a professional guitar AND bass guitar player could give you a correct answer...
ConcreteTheSecond 3 years ago
Well I found Bass alot easier...
My opinion.
I love both though.
lloydcook 3 years ago
my opinion is that you cant compare them like that... its like saying whats harder, Blues or Metal.. depends on the player and where they wanna go with there music...
but bass i probably easier to start out with... but again i dont think you can compare them like that.
Crazyguitarman1991 3 years ago
true so true
FORSoulless 3 years ago
Depends on the player, both bass and guitar is as hard as you make it.
riftguitar 3 years ago
well on this song guitars harder lol
FORSoulless 3 years ago
Of course, it's Vai, but the bass isn't easy at all on this song either. Bass is also a physically harder instrument to play.
riftguitar 3 years ago
sure maybe bass is hard but honestly if you think about it guitar is becouse of all these guitarists who play fast and good theres a standerd that we have to meet before were even considered good and you cant really hear when bass messes up but if guitar messis up every one and there mother knows. we have to play a good solo or the crowd gets dulled. so the bass is physical stress and the guitar is mentle stress so there both even in there own way!
FORSoulless 3 years ago
You can't hear when a bassist messes up?

FORSoulless 3 years ago 2
I am acctually peaceful, and I'm also a guitarplayer, I don't play much bass at all.
And, there is no doubt that the best string instrument players are gutiar players, BUT, that doesn't mean bass isn't equally difficult. But i do believe there are bassists that can match up to the top 100 guitarists, it just has to be a person that has has taken it to that level, there aren't many of them, but they do exist. And even if there are few of them, it doesn't make the instrument any easier.
riftguitar 3 years ago 2
Okay, that was enough...
(tried a bass, i think it's not a big deal and it's much easier then electric guitar, but because i'm not a bass-guitarist, my opinion worth NOTHING...)
No more flame, please.
ConcreteTheSecond 3 years ago
That's just because you didn't take it as far, if you play easy bass, it's the same as playing easy guitar.
Nothing will be hard, unless you try something hard.
riftguitar 3 years ago
I've played blues, bebop, metal;
tried fast soloing, two hand tapping, etc.
Everything was easier...
ConcreteTheSecond 3 years ago
so, set aside the fact that the string dimensions are larger, the frets are wider, and the strings in general are harder to move, and you played as you usually would on guitar, and you still found bass easier?
It's basically the same instrument, just an octave lower, take away and give a few things on the techniques of picking (if you use a pick), the way of holding your hand on the fretboard, general feel of the instrument and such.
riftguitar 3 years ago
bass just isnt nearly as complex...it can be - but in most music it isn't
spankyham911 3 years ago
Then it isn't about the instrument, but about the player.
Bass and guitar are equally complex instruments, and bass has larger dimensions in strings, fretboard and so on.
It is equal instruments, just that most bass players choose to make it easy. Playing Blink 182 and Jonas Brothers on guitar isn't hard, but that doesn't mean that guitar isn't hard.
riftguitar 3 years ago
Have you ever heard of Flea? Victor Wooten? Les Claypool? I could go on, there is tons of complicated bass music.
Freemanbros 3 years ago
you forgot Billy Sheehan.
Carlo754 3 years ago
phew ok lets just settle on it just depends on who you are and what you learn
FORSoulless 3 years ago
That's right, but you can't deny that guitar and bass is equally hard, just because the players make it easy, it doesn't make the instrument easy.
