Great performance! Nowadays people in Russian Karelia can really practise the karelian language which sounds very beautiful for my ears because my mother's family is from Karelia and I can remember my grandmother speaking karelian.
@Tretuville There are several Karelian dialects but no standard Karelian language. There have been some efforts to create one but the problem is that the dialects are too far apart for a single standard language.
Yong generation do not speak any Karelian in Karelian republic and there are only 2000 children learning some Karelian dialect in school. In comparison, there are 10 000 children learning finnish. Today only few elderly people - mainly women - can speak Karelian fluently.
Oh, come on, veikkozeni! Don't be a "drama queen"!:)
I live in Russia, and my second native tongue is Karjalan kieli, and I have absolutely no problems speaking it in my country. You probably think that we still live in Stalin's gulag, or something like that, but times have changed, believe me. Those who want, can speak Karelian language, write and read it. Every year many new books in all Karelian dialects are published in Petroskoi, they teach children to speak the language
@renbuzhi doesn't finnish is also an official language in russian karelia? :P i know that karelian is a language but as far as i know is only recognized ;)
Yes, Karelian is certainly not their native tongue. Pronunciation is good, but with strong Russian accent. Which is typical for practically all Karelian folk groups, based in cities. They take good singers, regardless of their nationality. And Russian women are phantastic singers, indeed! Thus, folk groups from Petroskoi usually sound a bit "Russianized" to Karelian and Finnish ear, to be honest. Which doesn't mean that there are no true Karelians in them!:)
karelian may be their native language. it is a known linguistic fact when natives of one language adopt the accent of another which has the majority of population (speciallyin cities)... in my region almost all native finno-ugric people (except some very rural ones) speak with Russian accent now
I can understand what they are saying but their accent is very "russian"

Finland tries to save these small Finno-Ugric languages and the same time Russia tries to make their situation more difficult...
