One of the cool things about the board mix of the US Fest, is you can actually hear Ed's vocal mic. He had a great voice! Too bad smoking fucked it up!
@superbeavo Actually, he ran one amp through power amps that supplied the house PA cabs that you see. He had a couple backup Plexis on tap, just in case he blew one but the huge rigs you see are redundant indeed. But all those speakers are working. That was a BIG show... no way would one full stack be enough.
@Theo80126 When I saw this tour Dave pulled some dudes girlfriend onto the stage and kissed her. Then security took her backstage. A few minutes later the dude threw something at DLR and hit him in the face. Everything stopped!!!. You're correct. During that tour, which I went to, Dave would say "You better believe this is real; this ain't no fuckin' Quiet Riot." VH and Ouiet Riot were rivals during their club days.
@govrom12, Most people that were there I talked to say VH was not their best because they were fucked up. They say that the Scorpians were the best. I know the tale. When I ask them if VH was their favorite group, they say no. But hardcore VH fans said that they were awesome. I'm from Los Angeles & have seen VH many times. I saw them the next year. I heard this on the radio at the time, and it sounded great. I see them here in vid, & they sound fine. So, it's a matter of perspective.
Your point is well taken. I like Van Halen and thankfully I saw them during the 1984 tour and they were awesome. I just think on this night they were horrible, but you're right it's a matter of perspective. I don't question the greatness that was Van Halen.
@govrom12 Btw, back then with most teenagers, if you liked Quiet Riot as opposed to VH, you were considered a poser. VH was the most popular hard rock act back then. I like the Clash too,but let's be honest, they weren't quite in the same league as Van Halen. You have to look at the history of the Van Halen family.2010 will be 47 yrs,the VH brothers have been playing their instruments. Not alot of bands can achieve this today.
I can clarify on the the Clash feud. Before the festival the Clash initially refused to play citing "Van Halen and his moron music" as the reason. They did end up playing though, saying "Van Halen will call us commies if we don't" so Roth was just kinda getting them back for that.

But if you believe the bottle that he is handing into the crowd full of minors is really Jaeger you are the dumbass my friend. Motley Crue kicked ass, it was a great show. But, that is a stunt

KEEP THE SPIRIT OF ROCK ALIVE BITCHES
they were a remarkably "tight" band.........hardly any missed notes by either guitarist or the drummer................their songs sounded much like the album recordins, even though they were all moving around putting on a "physical" show as well as instrumental show
VH in their prime was a better aural, visual, and emotional act than pretty much anyone. Ive been told that Queen was a tight band in person as well as Rush
yeah i know the speakers are for looks but knowing him he might have found a way to make them loud enough with out micing them. It doesn't sound that loud though, that's why i was second guessing it.
This "old school" Van Halen is simple the best. That rich guitar work can't be topped. I saw them on the 2007-2008 tour,(good) but watch the early '80's vintage videos, with some whiskey on the rocks.
Sorry man your wrong. Just gotta look at it this way. Eddie Van Halen's speed and sound of his guitar was revolutionary and not heard of in 1978 and David Lee Roth was a larger than life frontman. These two things were imitated by countless bands in teh 80s FACT.
A clearly intoxicated Roth compounded this rivalry by insulting The Clash onstage early during Van Halen's headlining set with his comment, "I wanna take this time to say that this is real whiskey here... the only people who put iced tea in Jack Daniel's bottles is The Clash, baby!" Roth's comment, however, was used on-stage at every Van Halen show as a challenge to that night's opening band, and in this case it was directed at The Clash.
yea, what rowdyrob said, u fuckin doucebag, get some original material.... Van Halen fuckin kicked ass back then, they owned Rock, i dont care if all of them were fucked up on coke and JD bangin underage girls, id do the same if i was a rockstar.
This and The Clash's ironic criticism of the festival in the press conferences and in interviews prior to the event caused an argument backstage between Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth and The Clash singer Joe Strummer. This may have also been kickstarted by a comment guitarist Eddie Van Halen made in Rolling Stone magazine one month prior regarding the punk movement ("...that's like what I played in my garage when I was a kid, man.").
Van Halen received an upfront sum of $1,500,000 to headline the 1983 US Festival. In contrast, The Clash refused to play unless some donations were made to charities or other such noble causes by Wozniak and some of the other major bands. After The Clash performed the DJ began speaking right away and Clash guitarist Mick Jones attacked the DJ believing he was trying to prevent an encore.
That's ridiculous. Nickelback is a pretty big group today, but Lord almighty that sure doesn't make them good. I had the honor of seeing both bands in their prime, and I can tell you, the Clash were probably the only band in the world at that time who could rival VH in pure intensity. However, the Clash had 4 classic albums, while VH probably can only be considered to have 2 tops. Not to mention the lasting cultural impact the Clash had. 3 years after this clip, people thought DLR was a clown.
Open any encylopedia of rock and find out for yourself, my friend, and discover the Clash's lasting influence. Look up Pete Townshend's opinion on the two bands while your at it. Or Bono. Or Eddie Vedder. True guitarists use something other than their instrument to wank with.
Bullshit. My cousin was backstage at a Van Halen show (she was in fact, in a crowd shot in the video for 'Panama').
When handed a Jack Daniel's bottle by Michael Anthony, she took a swig and shared a laugh with M.A., because she found that the bottle contained apple juice.
QUOTE - "I worked my ass off on Fair Warning. But I love it, it's my life... I won't rag too much on Dave; he pulls his own weight. Mike [Anthony] doesn't. He doesn't do anything; he has no input whatsoever. But he has remodeled his whole house and bought himself a [Porsche] Turbo Carrera with the money he's made off of us. Whatever. I'll tell you the honest-to-God truth - since day one I never liked Mike's sound, and I could never hear him when we're playing." -- Eddie Van Halen
i'm not going to argue that point, but vh pissed away their fame and fortune with petty squabbling for years and years. their reunion tour could have been twenty times as big as it was if it had happened 10 or 15 years ago. as it is, they're all egomaniacs whose long lasting influence on popular music and culture today is dwarfed by the clash.
No wonder that Kurt Cobain was a stupid retarded junkie that had afraid of the dark and see things that dont exist and he cant play guitar just like you idiot
Ok, a). kurt cobain was a hell of a songwriter, b). again, i'm not defending his decision to kill himself, and c). i've been playing guitar for 12 years, so i know a thing or two about the instrument.
Ok a) Kurt cobain was a shithead with no brain that see things that dont exist b) you beeing such a fool kurt cobain doesnt reaches eddie´s feet. Eddie is one of kind a inventor. And last but not least c)Maybe you know how to play but your taste isnt very good. Calling one of the 20 century most inoovative guitarists misarable drunk is for someone that knows shit about music or guitar...
Not once did I ever say that I didn't respect the hell out of EVH for his innovative style, tone and songwriting. He was and is the total package, but to say that Nirvana is a drop in a bucket compared to van halen is something only a fucking fool would say.
You sayed "no wonder that kurt cobain called eddie a miserable drunk". Thats a very bad insult and disrespect. Nirvana is a shity band. They play all bad, the music is all the same they are just fucking high fools. I am not the fool. The fools are guys that like nirvana...
Wrong again sport. Most consider both guitarists pretty inovative songwriters in their own regard. Again, and i emphasize the word ***again***, i respect van halen for their songwriting, but we'll have to agree to disagree.
Ok if you like that idiots music go listen to them. Dont come around here and call a great guitarist misarable drunk.. The only guy here worng is you. Ok you may have to agree to disagree but compare a fiat to a ferrari if you know what I mean... it is wrong
Both of you assholes are wrong. I respect VH, but I don't particularly like their music, as to me, it's all the same, played out cock rock that dominated the 80s that tickled fags like the both of you to no end. Cobain, while not a fantastic guitar player, wrote better material, and long after eddie is dead, Nevermind will still top "greatest albums" lists in many a magazine.
Ok you are have a problem. You dont have good taste... Eddie Van Halen has so much more imagination but you know what i am not going to lose my time with you... Keep yourself with your idiots band nirvana....
a) Cobain was a shithead. But he did have a brain, if not he wouldn't have been able to blow it out. b) Kurt Cobain couldn't sing or play guitar worth shit, in fact, even his guitar looked like one of eddie's turds. c) i bet you can't play like eddie can, so shut the fuck up and if you don't like van halen then why the fuck are you watching a video about them?
Heh. Let's get real for a sec: There are tons of VH fans out there, especially ones who started listening to the original band line-up back in the 70's and 80's, who were hugely disappointed that the long-anticipated reunion didn't quite happen. The people who don't care about Mikey now are the ones who didn't care about him before - plenty of fans actually liked him a lot, and still do.
Michael Anthony was always the lameass bass player in VH. We used to call him fatboy. Going to an old show and sitting through his bass solo was the only drudgery during a VH show. Yes, he is much more appreciated now for the great back up harmony , but during the early years he was a bumbling, fat, slob. Anthony was kinda like Perkins from the old 'Sheriff Lobo' tv show.
To be honest, he wasn't that big (relative to some one like Wolfgang, anyway - the rest of the band members were always thin) in the beginning, and was probably better on stage in general. He kept his energy up with the rest of the band throughout the show, which Wolfie hasn't done yet. He was the least popular member, though, if that's what you mean.
People who didn't start appreciating MA until after he was gone just don't have much understanding of music or maybe just bass/backup singing.
Considering this is Wolfgang's first tour with VH; considering Wolfie is only 16; considering he can hit the same harmonies and play the same rudimentary Anthony bass lines; I would say that Wolfgang is holding his own, thank you. Is it better than the original? No. But filling in for Michael Anthony is not like filling in for Eddie, Dave, or Alex. I'm not saying that Anthony didn't make a necessary contribution; But having Anthony gone is not as devastating a proposition as you may think.
My recollection of Michael Anthony is fueled by your unfair critique of Wolfgang. We would still cheer Anthony's bass solo during a show. His bass solo wasn't drudgery. He's a nice guy, but he still is a geek. I think that's why he gets along w/ Hagar so well. Hagar & Anthony would have been in that nerdy high school garage band back in high school.
Any VH fan worth his weight in gold, cares the world for Mike! His vocals and bass prowess was a VITAL part of this band's success, despite Ed giving him the brushoff. The real sticking point is that supposedly Mike was the least active in songwriting. OK, maybe so, but what he lacked in writing he more than made up fopr in technique-and SPICE! All you have to do is watch and listen.
I totally agree, mikes vocals were fucking great and made the first few vh albums so great- when i was a kid i used to think vh were like the beach boys with heavy rock, the singing was that good- all in all a great combination of good music, great vocals and great fuckin guitar riffs( and amazing tone for someone so young)- long live the original VH line -up
anyone sayin the ORGINAL BASSIST TO VAN HALEN SUCKS IS RETARDED...cuz if u own a VH cd ur not listenin to wolfie ur listenin to the bad boy MIKEY singin those back up vocals
Backstory on the Clash comment: The Clash played the US Festival also. In an interview earlier that weekend, Joe Strummer called Van Halen "capitalists" for accepting 1.5 million dollars to play this show.
Now, let's be honest here - even VH fans that have welcomed Wolfgang with open arms NEVER try to claim that he sings better than MA. MA's vocals actually played a huge role in VH's signature sound, and backup singing is one of the most obvious downfalls of the current tour. I'm not saying Wolfie sucks or that Mikey was always spot-on live, but just because we're excited about the new tour doesn't mean we can't be realistic here.
He dises the clash because the night before the clash was the headliner and the lead singer ripped america saying "what's a matter america don't you know how to party?"
I was there and it pissed everybody off!
So, DLR being the great American Patriot that he is takes a shot at them! I loved it and so did everybody around me. Long Live Rock-N-Roll! Somebody give me a shot!
Yea! One hot weekend We had spray bottles with water spraying the girls yelling "show us your tits" they did It was the best weekend of my life To find it on youtube is awesome I even found myself in this vid when he yells at me for squirting him when in fact it was the guy next to me and there I am in the white looking up at DD when he goes to the front of the stage. That was just too cool! we just drank alot of beer in the beer garden. The nights were awesome tent parties

Those speaker are for looks. He has a stereo rig back stage or under the stage that is mic'ed. At least that is how he is running it now.

This "old school" Van Halen is simple the best. That rich guitar work can't be topped. I saw them on the 2007-2008 tour,(good) but watch the early '80's vintage videos, with some whiskey on the rocks.
This is pure rock N roll. End of story.

Thunderclese 3 years ago
Van Halen received an upfront sum of $1,500,000 to headline the 1983 US Festival. In contrast, The Clash refused to play unless some donations were made to charities or other such noble causes by Wozniak and some of the other major bands. After The Clash performed the DJ began speaking right away and Clash guitarist Mick Jones attacked the DJ believing he was trying to prevent an encore.
Thunderclese 3 years ago
The Clash have done more for music than that asshole David Lee Roth ever will.

What did the clash do that David Lee Roth didn't do???
6 straight platinum albums while a part of van halen. TWO OF THEM GOING DIAMOND (10 million + albums)
Van Halen (1978)
1984 (1983)
Tell me now, what did the clash do for music that van halen didn't do?????????
abney20 3 years ago
That's ridiculous. Nickelback is a pretty big group today, but Lord almighty that sure doesn't make them good. I had the honor of seeing both bands in their prime, and I can tell you, the Clash were probably the only band in the world at that time who could rival VH in pure intensity. However, the Clash had 4 classic albums, while VH probably can only be considered to have 2 tops. Not to mention the lasting cultural impact the Clash had. 3 years after this clip, people thought DLR was a clown.
stutwostep 3 years ago

Eddie's burnt out.
Bedrock of Rock comes from the interplay of bass g with the drums.
Lead guitar is another voice and accents singing.
Singing should tell a story, starting in the middle of action leading to a full impression.
Any complaint should come from Alex, not Eddie, that is, if one could be said.

No wonder Kurt Cobain called eddie a miserable drunk.
stutwostep 3 years ago
fuck kurt cobain. he shot his own brains out because he just wanted the easy way out
hamerexploreremd 3 years ago
i'm not going to argue that point, but vh pissed away their fame and fortune with petty squabbling for years and years. their reunion tour could have been twenty times as big as it was if it had happened 10 or 15 years ago. as it is, they're all egomaniacs whose long lasting influence on popular music and culture today is dwarfed by the clash.
stutwostep 3 years ago
No wonder that Kurt Cobain was a stupid retarded junkie that had afraid of the dark and see things that dont exist and he cant play guitar just like you idiot
rodrigoguitarlover 3 years ago
Ok, a). kurt cobain was a hell of a songwriter, b). again, i'm not defending his decision to kill himself, and c). i've been playing guitar for 12 years, so i know a thing or two about the instrument.
stutwostep 3 years ago
Ok a) Kurt cobain was a shithead with no brain that see things that dont exist b) you beeing such a fool kurt cobain doesnt reaches eddie´s feet. Eddie is one of kind a inventor. And last but not least c)Maybe you know how to play but your taste isnt very good. Calling one of the 20 century most inoovative guitarists misarable drunk is for someone that knows shit about music or guitar...
rodrigoguitarlover 3 years ago
Not once did I ever say that I didn't respect the hell out of EVH for his innovative style, tone and songwriting. He was and is the total package, but to say that Nirvana is a drop in a bucket compared to van halen is something only a fucking fool would say.
stutwostep 3 years ago
You sayed "no wonder that kurt cobain called eddie a miserable drunk". Thats a very bad insult and disrespect. Nirvana is a shity band. They play all bad, the music is all the same they are just fucking high fools. I am not the fool. The fools are guys that like nirvana...
rodrigoguitarlover 3 years ago
Wrong again sport. Most consider both guitarists pretty inovative songwriters in their own regard. Again, and i emphasize the word ***again***, i respect van halen for their songwriting, but we'll have to agree to disagree.
stutwostep 3 years ago
Ok if you like that idiots music go listen to them. Dont come around here and call a great guitarist misarable drunk.. The only guy here worng is you. Ok you may have to agree to disagree but compare a fiat to a ferrari if you know what I mean... it is wrong
rodrigoguitarlover 3 years ago
Both of you assholes are wrong. I respect VH, but I don't particularly like their music, as to me, it's all the same, played out cock rock that dominated the 80s that tickled fags like the both of you to no end. Cobain, while not a fantastic guitar player, wrote better material, and long after eddie is dead, Nevermind will still top "greatest albums" lists in many a magazine.
stutwostep 3 years ago
Ok you are have a problem. You dont have good taste... Eddie Van Halen has so much more imagination but you know what i am not going to lose my time with you... Keep yourself with your idiots band nirvana....
rodrigoguitarlover 3 years ago
ok i'm gonna take over the argument here.
a) Cobain was a shithead. But he did have a brain, if not he wouldn't have been able to blow it out. b) Kurt Cobain couldn't sing or play guitar worth shit, in fact, even his guitar looked like one of eddie's turds. c) i bet you can't play like eddie can, so shut the fuck up and if you don't like van halen then why the fuck are you watching a video about them?
alpha1shadow 3 years ago
Yes of course... He insults eddie and then thinks he has got all the reason... Kurt cobain was a retard...

No one cares about Mikie anymore.
Go see him with Sammy at a carnival near you and watch them butcher VH songs.
KRProds 3 years ago
ReginaldsTest 3 years ago
Michael Anthony was always the lameass bass player in VH. We used to call him fatboy. Going to an old show and sitting through his bass solo was the only drudgery during a VH show. Yes, he is much more appreciated now for the great back up harmony , but during the early years he was a bumbling, fat, slob. Anthony was kinda like Perkins from the old 'Sheriff Lobo' tv show.
cvjucla3 3 years ago
To be honest, he wasn't that big (relative to some one like Wolfgang, anyway - the rest of the band members were always thin) in the beginning, and was probably better on stage in general. He kept his energy up with the rest of the band throughout the show, which Wolfie hasn't done yet. He was the least popular member, though, if that's what you mean.
People who didn't start appreciating MA until after he was gone just don't have much understanding of music or maybe just bass/backup singing.
ReginaldsTest 3 years ago
Considering this is Wolfgang's first tour with VH; considering Wolfie is only 16; considering he can hit the same harmonies and play the same rudimentary Anthony bass lines; I would say that Wolfgang is holding his own, thank you. Is it better than the original? No. But filling in for Michael Anthony is not like filling in for Eddie, Dave, or Alex. I'm not saying that Anthony didn't make a necessary contribution; But having Anthony gone is not as devastating a proposition as you may think.
cvjucla3 3 years ago
My recollection of Michael Anthony is fueled by your unfair critique of Wolfgang. We would still cheer Anthony's bass solo during a show. His bass solo wasn't drudgery. He's a nice guy, but he still is a geek. I think that's why he gets along w/ Hagar so well. Hagar & Anthony would have been in that nerdy high school garage band back in high school.
cvjucla3 3 years ago
Any VH fan worth his weight in gold, cares the world for Mike! His vocals and bass prowess was a VITAL part of this band's success, despite Ed giving him the brushoff. The real sticking point is that supposedly Mike was the least active in songwriting. OK, maybe so, but what he lacked in writing he more than made up fopr in technique-and SPICE! All you have to do is watch and listen.
NYVoice 3 years ago
You hit the nail on the head. I'm not gonna knock Wolfie, but now that Mike is gone people are actually realizing how CRUCIAL he was to the sound.
Chrisdrumz 3 years ago 3
I totally agree, mikes vocals were fucking great and made the first few vh albums so great- when i was a kid i used to think vh were like the beach boys with heavy rock, the singing was that good- all in all a great combination of good music, great vocals and great fuckin guitar riffs( and amazing tone for someone so young)- long live the original VH line -up

Texascowdoll 3 years ago
Now, let's be honest here - even VH fans that have welcomed Wolfgang with open arms NEVER try to claim that he sings better than MA. MA's vocals actually played a huge role in VH's signature sound, and backup singing is one of the most obvious downfalls of the current tour. I'm not saying Wolfie sucks or that Mikey was always spot-on live, but just because we're excited about the new tour doesn't mean we can't be realistic here.
BTW, I love this US festival footage.
