The description on this video doesn't make sense. "someone sent him the wrong lug nuts with the wrong threading" and this guy still felt compelled to put it on!? I mean, if it was the wrong thread pitch, it would be pretty damn hard to put those lugs on keep in mind also stripping the threads in the process. The guy deserves that outcome in my opinion for his negligence and massive fail in common sense.
What airline mechanics do: after torquing the nuts, take a marker and draw a straight line on the wheel and the nut. You can immediately see if it has loosened.
That's why the orgonizers MUST do tech inspections before letting people run. As the video shows, people do forget to do simple things like, TIGHTEN THE FING LUG NUTS.
Maybe spend less time worrying about finding matching pimp red driving shoes.
Terrible way to learn a lesson. All bolts/nuts have a thread pitch. When you try to put a nut on a bolt with mismatched pitch, you can easily tell...BUT, you have to experience it to learn it. First clue should have been when the lug nut only went on 1/2 turn before binding up in the mismatched threads. For the wheels to come off that quickly, those lug nuts HAD to be barely on. Hang in there, we all mess up.
@JeffInDFW Wow man, I know this is like a 4 month comment, but this is dumb... obviously incorrect pitch wouldn't work, but you would know as soon as the car was down if stupid enough to not realize the lug wasn't on all the way. I remember a friend of mine that was there telling me what actually happened...
@speedklix Lug nuts given to this guy were correct thread, but the ID was 1 mm too big. His race set torqued down and drove perfectly fine around the grid area, as soon as he got on it however, they popped right off the threads... he drove this car home with not much more than a few scraps if I remember correctly. So in this guys defense, it isn't his fault if someone passed the incorrect hardware to him and his precision tool (torque wrench) indicated all was well.
And the guy you're raggin on looks like a by-stander with a set of relatively lower cost Simpson racing shoes... and lets face it, unless you get black, they all look weird. I'm gonna take a wild guess that you're some ricer who has fuggerd up a set of rims/studs at some point :)
@JeffInDFW it's SCCA, not some amateur hour parking lot street race. he's even on R-comp tires. He HAD to have been skilled. we all make mistakes, no need to grill him.
i tell ya . When I am havin abad day i watch this and my day isnt so bad after all. Thats just hilarious. I'd hate to be the guy answering that call from the place who sold those lug nuts. Again if ya that much of hy-po racer ya should have dbl chkd. just cause they are tight.. ya know?
I watched this happen, he had bought new lugs, even torqued them properly. Went through tech, and then the lateral force stripped the threads right off. The guy hasn't come back but we wish he would. This could happen to anyone.
Happen to anyone? Thats the stupidest thing ive heard in a while. I feel for the guy but as someone who has broken everything in the powertrain in the quest for speed both on and off the track, the lugs are the one thing I have NOT broken.
Its not impossible, I've had this happen to me (only on wheel) and 2 of the 4 bolts held thank god, but my wheel had some serious negative camber and I had a bent rotor and destroyed wheelbearings. It can happen to anyone, bad batch for the bolts, old/over torqued specs so many variables on this.
@racevidfreak ...just confirmed my new lugs the other day because of this video! No one would otherwise ever confirm the actual measuements for nuts that even bolt on properly... funny soo many claim otherwise.
Hmm, I remember hearing it was some china studs that he bought that caused that, not the lug nuts...if u notice the rear left side rotor has no studs left, like it just broke off
after reading the description you have to be pretty stupid not to feel the difference between right and wrong lug nuts. this person obviously doesn't deserve to work on his own car. first off why did he need new lug nuts anyways did he change out the studs or something?
Factory wheels often use different lug nuts than aftermarket wheels. Has nothing to do with the thread of the stud but rather the mating surface between the wheel and the nut.
Hahahaha.... I remember that guy. It's not that some one sent him the wrong lugs, he was braggining to us how he got a full set of lugs from eBay for $40. Everyone was like "Uhhh, dudue do you think it's a good idea to run a set of lets that you got for $40 from eBay?" and he was like "Y'all just jealous that I got them so cheap."
whoever put those wheels on is an idiot. If they were the wrong lug nuts, you should have noticed. Theres no way they held the proper torque then just fell off.
It happened bc the lug nuts where the wrong size. They were too big, close enough that they grabbed the outside edge of the threads but clearly once lateral pressure was on the car they failed.
I'm starting to think this thing didn't even have lug nuts on it...or maybe just a few, hand-tight. It's just odd that all 4 failed at the same time. That kinda stuff rarely happens by accident.
I'm not sure I understand how lug nuts caused this. Were the threads wrong? Or maybe the rim & the nuts didn't match? Anyway, that's a damn shame. Awesome awesome car. I wish they'd bring it back, even for just a limited-edition re-run. Even by today's standards, that car still looks stunning.
ive actually seen that happen before. sometimes its not the wrong lugs at all but they actually heat up to much and expand losing their grip. this can happen for several reasons but if it was the wrong ones to start with i would sue the shit out of the company.
may not be the companys fault, companies like tsw, wolfrace, bk racing etc have a big panflet in the boxes the wheels come in clearly stating that the nuts/bolts should be compired withe the oe ones and then put on the hub by hand with no wheel on to make sure they go on ok, its not often the wheel companies fault, more often its the retailer that sells them that causes all this greif
It's not that he didn't tighten the lug nuts enough, he got the wrong type of lug nuts or someone sent him the wrong ones and he didn't check. Same thing will happen if you put aftermarket lug nuts on stock wheels, so be careful.
HAHA you dipshit....YOU SIR!! who the fuck talks like that? Did you have on white gloves and an eyeglass in your eye when you typed this? 1700s english snark FTL!
Ok, now if you put the wrong lugs on, MOST are going to think "derr, hey that's not tightening down right, must be the wrong set". If you aren;t one of them, please give me your car and return your license.
+1, they're either going to be loose as hell or not fit at all. I wouldn't even want that car. That guy sure did ruin race day. I bet everyone was pissed. Wonder how the driver felt... probably like a 100% Certified Jackass lol....
For sure! I'm like, yeah I do feel bad for him cuz we all screw up I guess, but come on... They are the most important bolts on the car. I mean how'd that pass tech?
Family Guy's in the video tags. So, what? Was this one of Peter Griffin's flashbacks? "Brian, remember the time when I drove an RX-7 with the wrong lug nuts?"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
staged all 4 wheels would never come off at the same time unless someone had taken the wheel nuts off or were very loose but then all 4 wheels same time = would never happen normaly
It is not staged. If you notice the front wheels break loose when he applies the brakes, once he starts to turn; the lateral loads on the lug nuts strip the threads, starting with the inside wheels, the car pitches counter clockwise and load the outer wheel, and those lugs strip also.
If you put the wrong thread lug nuts on your car, stripping theading as you tighten them down, and then apply a lateral load this is exactly what will happen to you.
I would just like to point out that now his car is sitting on the track..... bummer. Probably stopped the whole event for a long time.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
staged all 4 wheels would never come off at the same time unless someone had taken the wheel nuts off or were very loose but then all 4 wheels same time = would never happen normaly

good point, but i dont think anyone would do that do their car!!! You'd have to be 1 dumb fother mucker.
