yup really, but the dunedaine age slower than humans. Elves age even slower, in fact they hardly age at all.

@teothdemon, elves are immortal unless killed so they last for however long the world lasts. @Dirtfire, the elves woke up about 10,000 years before LoTR (thus why the oldest elves are about that old).

pyritehorse, do you remember how Elrond is called 'halfelven' in the movie? Well that is because his father was a man, and his mother was an elf. Elrond therefore got to chose whether he would be an elf or a man. Elrond had a brother named Elros. Elros chose to be a man, and he became a King of Men. The Dunedain are his descendents. You are right few of them have pure blood anymore, but they still live a heck of a lot longer than other men.

They were "created" by Iluvatar, the same way God created Adam and Eve in the Bible. I got this information from the second chapter of The Silmarillion (basically a prequel to LoTR), Also very few of the original elves are left in Middle-Earth but there are a few.
