Why the fuck do I need to pay $20+ for a fucking stand that my PS3 shouldn't even need to begin with. God Sony, you greedy fucking bastards. Seriously, why doesn't the Xbox need a stupid stand like this? FUCK this.
My fat ps3 overheated too.. then my brother bought a slim one.. No problems so far (more than a year now) I just bought my metallic blue ps3 slim.. cuz i prefer having a systen that works, rather one that reads ps2 discs but fails..
There's one thing that concerns me about this vertical stand. What if there's an earthquake, and your PS3 is in the stand? the PS3 could fall over and break. Has that ever occured to anyone that it could happen?
@MrCrazycarl123 .... Well if your being serious, That's just a Natural disaster both for the area and your ps3. Pretty sure a ps3 will survive a normal fall from a quake. Unless it falls off a 1 story building on stone.
@EnergyElectricEnd Well you can place it in an vertical position, and it does stand, but not so well. It wobbles and if you are not careful it could easily be tipped over.

I think personally that they designed this wrong. It should be on the other side of the Ps3. If you know heat rises and the way it is now all the heat is going away from the fan and up towards the disk drive and the hard drive.You want the heat to go to the fan so it can blow the hot air out of the system. This setup also blocks the side vent on the Ps3 keeping the fan from getting some air. But it can still get it through the front vent

ps3 slim lack of attractiveness but sure this is a powerful machine. am from the philippines and its very very hot in here. i've played for more than 15 hours i guess, and i have my ps3 for at least 2 and a half years now. no problem at all! all i can say is the slim can stand up in excessive heat for sure! i have tested my slim to that. no problem so far. no freezing or whatever, in short no hustle! i should say you pick a standard vertical stand for your slim. no need for fans!
@MrPopular22 It's actually very simple. The console has some vents in the front, left of the bluray drive (if the console is horizontal). The air gets sucked through these vents and after that, it's expelled at the rear.
@pyrocain No, it can get overheated no matter how you put it...if your ps3 gets to hot simply buy a stand with a cooler in it..i got a Logic3 Vertical stand and it's great.
@15liulj123 I don't know about the regular ones, but I just bought the $299.99 Killzone 3 Bundled 160GB PS3 earlier today, and it did NOT have a vertical stand in the box.
However, they appear to cost around $5-$10 on places like Amazon.com, so it's not that big of a deal thankfully.

Does it break your games at all? When I had my 360 (glad I sold it) I first stood it up when I got it and it broke a bunch of my games because it was standing up. I want to have 100% assurance that it won't break my games before I stand it up

I think it standing up does make a difference in some cases. I have a projector sitting next to my Ps3 slim and it blows hot air right to the bottom and it was freezing my ps3 i stood it up and poof. no more heating issues. its just a matter of how your house is set up.

@vladbebe I just did a cool mod I think PS3 slim owners might be interested in. I will try to post a video some day soon. I cut a square hole directly above the fan in the ps3 and but a mesh grill over it and it looks pretty good. Now when I play games the air behind it feels room temperature. When i did a thermal test the air leaving was a whole 9.7 degrees F cooler. pretty awesome. it took me roughly an hour.

I have a xbox360 console aswell and I can`t keep them both horizontally because there is no room. Plus I kind of like it more like this. I just had to get used to inserting and ejecting a disc from the console :). And in my case at least I can say for sure that the console is cooler in the vertical position. Tested with IR thermometer.
@vladbebe actualy it makes no difference,, vertical option is only there for few reasons, space issues, to look cooler thats a few,, it isnt cooler verticaly,, plus it reads discs better when its layed down anyway,,
@DjStiv3 Actually it does make a difference. Think of the total surface exposed to airflow when the console is vertical. The whole bottom is now exposed and not retaining heat as it would when standing horizontally. And plus, I objectified this issue by measuring the case temperatures and I can tell you that there's a difference of about 4 degrees Celsius. Now, if you don`t believe me that's ok. It's your console and you can keep it anyway you like :)
@vladbebe either way it doesnt matter, i have the intercooler,, plus you dont have to have yur console just sitting horizontal ,, as for mine when its horizontal it sits on top of yet another usb powered fan for laptops,, so i dont have to worry,,

@audveltadmuna I doubt that a knock off brand could support your console through a earthquake. Mainly because the knock off stand pretty much is useless. In contrast, the original stand should be ok, although I'm no seismologist :))

I have this slim 120gb, and when I shut it down, it makes some crunching noises some period of time. I heard that its just because of heat expansion, but sometimes these crunch noises sounds pretty loud to me, sometimes when I start playing and/or shutting console off. Is it just normal? Should I change it to older 80gb fat version? Or is crunch noises and little heating normal in slim?
@Suuriorava The "crunching" noises are normal and appear in most of the PS3 slims. It's just the plastic expanding and contracting because of the heat. Although, if the noises appear often and your console is very hot to the touch, I would recommend that you move it to a more ventilated place. Also, try not to keep it on the carpet, or in a cabinet. Take care of dust too. You have no reason to change your slim console to a fat one, unless you like the old design more. Hope this helped.

@Rushfan32935 you are correct. I agree full-heartedly, mainly because I have had this happen to me. Thankfully, the console was allright because it didn`t fall very hard as I had some books next to it :)

ive heard that the ps3 slim does popping noises once in awhile and alot of people say u should get a stand for it to not be heating too much becuz thats whats causing the noises . i was wondering if thats true ?
@TheDjAdel Yes, the console does make popping noises once it heats up and when it cools down.It's the plastic expanding and contracting because of the temperature change.It's nothing to worry about as most of the PS3 slims do this.I don`t know if the stand will affect this, but since I placed my console vertically these popping noises are far less frequent. Thus I deduced that the console gets less hotter, and it should be that way because more of the console's surface is exposed to airflow.
@TheDjAdel Well, I can't really say anything about the intercooler as I don`t really know much about it. Anyway, I am extremely suspicious regarding anything that you should attach to your console for cooling as that hardware could actually reduce airflow and stress your console's fan. Again, I don't really know much about it. To be honest I would not buy such a thing.
Just keep your console in a well ventilated space and take care of the dust issue and, you shouldn`t have any trouble with it.
@psp0ninga17 Depends. I keep it like that because I don`t have enough space to keep both my consoles horizontally, so I keep them both vertically. It`s a matter of taste. Keep it the way you like because it doesn't really matter.
@psp0ninga17 Absolutely no vents are blocked on the PS3 Slim when it is held vertically so I can't comment more on this issue because in my opinion it's non existant. In my experience, the console is not warmer when held vertically, actually, it`s the other way around. For me at least it's cooler. Mainly because of the fact that the console's bottom no longer rests on a flat surface retaining heat. So it has more surface open to airflow, thus it would be safe to conclude that it would be cooler.
@psp0ninga17 Why would it matter ? Sony made this console so that it could stand vertically and horizontally without any problems. If it would matter and Sony considered that it was risky keeping your console in a specific way they would have said so. Or they would have not released the vertical stand.
The most important thing to remember is to keep your console in a well ventilated space and from there you should not have any problems, regardless of your console's orientation.
@iSimie I don`t think so. Although, when I keep my PS3 horizontally the plastic makes a popping noise when it heats up. A noise that is far less present when the console is placed vertically. In my case at least...
i prefer to leave it horizontal but for anyone watching. make sure you buy the official ps3 stand, if not it will wobble like in the video. do not use any aftermarket parts that are $5 cheaper to secure your $300 investment

I just had to get used to inserting and ejecting a disc from the console :). And in my case at least I can say for sure that the console is cooler in the vertical position. Tested with IR thermometer.

@vladbebe actualy it makes no difference,, vertical option is only there for few reasons, space issues, to look cooler thats a few,, it isnt cooler verticaly,, plus it reads discs better when its layed down anyway,,

@DjStiv3 Actually it does make a difference. Think of the total surface exposed to airflow when the console is vertical. The whole bottom is now exposed and not retaining heat as it would when standing horizontally. And plus, I objectified this issue by measuring the case temperatures and I can tell you that there's a difference of about 4 degrees Celsius. Now, if you don`t believe me that's ok. It's your console and you can keep it anyway you like :)

@vladbebe either way it doesnt matter, i have the intercooler,, plus you dont have to have yur console just sitting horizontal ,, as for mine when its horizontal it sits on top of yet another usb powered fan for laptops,, so i dont have to worry,,

If there would be an earthquake would it still stand?, because here in iceland we have like a big earthquake every 4 or 5 years or shorter it can happen every time

@audveltadmuna I doubt that a knock off brand could support your console through a earthquake. Mainly because the knock off stand pretty much is useless. In contrast, the original stand should be ok, although I'm no seismologist :))

I have this slim 120gb, and when I shut it down, it makes some crunching noises some period of time. I heard that its just because of heat expansion, but sometimes these crunch noises sounds pretty loud to me, sometimes when I start playing and/or shutting console off. Is it just normal? Should I change it to older 80gb fat version? Or is crunch noises and little heating normal in slim?

@Suuriorava The "crunching" noises are normal and appear in most of the PS3 slims. It's just the plastic expanding and contracting because of the heat. Although, if the noises appear often and your console is very hot to the touch, I would recommend that you move it to a more ventilated place. Also, try not to keep it on the carpet, or in a cabinet. Take care of dust too. You have no reason to change your slim console to a fat one, unless you like the old design more. Hope this helped.

I think it's totally worth the $25. I wouldn't risk standing it up without one and have some retard bump into the entertainment center and knock it over.

@Rushfan32935 you are correct. I agree full-heartedly, mainly because I have had this happen to me. Thankfully, the console was allright because it didn`t fall very hard as I had some books next to it :)
Since then, vertical stand all the way !

ive heard that the ps3 slim does popping noises once in awhile and alot of people say u should get a stand for it to not be heating too much becuz thats whats causing the noises . i was wondering if thats true ?

@TheDjAdel Yes, the console does make popping noises once it heats up and when it cools down.It's the plastic expanding and contracting because of the temperature change.It's nothing to worry about as most of the PS3 slims do this.I don`t know if the stand will affect this, but since I placed my console vertically these popping noises are far less frequent. Thus I deduced that the console gets less hotter, and it should be that way because more of the console's surface is exposed to airflow.

@TheDjAdel Well, I can't really say anything about the intercooler as I don`t really know much about it. Anyway, I am extremely suspicious regarding anything that you should attach to your console for cooling as that hardware could actually reduce airflow and stress your console's fan. Again, I don't really know much about it. To be honest I would not buy such a thing.
Just keep your console in a well ventilated space and take care of the dust issue and, you shouldn`t have any trouble with it.

@psp0ninga17 Depends. I keep it like that because I don`t have enough space to keep both my consoles horizontally, so I keep them both vertically. It`s a matter of taste. Keep it the way you like because it doesn't really matter.

@psp0ninga17 Absolutely no vents are blocked on the PS3 Slim when it is held vertically so I can't comment more on this issue because in my opinion it's non existant. In my experience, the console is not warmer when held vertically, actually, it`s the other way around. For me at least it's cooler. Mainly because of the fact that the console's bottom no longer rests on a flat surface retaining heat. So it has more surface open to airflow, thus it would be safe to conclude that it would be cooler.

@psp0ninga17 Why would it matter ? Sony made this console so that it could stand vertically and horizontally without any problems. If it would matter and Sony considered that it was risky keeping your console in a specific way they would have said so. Or they would have not released the vertical stand.
The most important thing to remember is to keep your console in a well ventilated space and from there you should not have any problems, regardless of your console's orientation.

@iSimie I don`t think so. Although, when I keep my PS3 horizontally the plastic makes a popping noise when it heats up. A noise that is far less present when the console is placed vertically. In my case at least...

i prefer to leave it horizontal but for anyone watching. make sure you buy the official ps3 stand, if not it will wobble like in the video. do not use any aftermarket parts that are $5 cheaper to secure your $300 investment
